Median county home price too high for most
There aren 't enough houses on the market, and
increases in wages have been slow, Realtors say.

prise to area real e tale brokers that
fewer and fewer people can afford to
buy a home here.
Only 18% of Orange County house-
holds could afford the median-priced
home in the county In November, ac·
cording 10 data from the California
Assn. of Realtors. In November 2002,
the housing affordability index was
seven points higher, al 25%.
Median home prices have risen
substantially because of the shortage
of available homes, William Cote of
Cote Realty said.
"We don't have any product." Cote
said. "Theres just nor a lot of homes
to sell. TI1e amount of available in·
ven1ory is le~ than half of what it was
a year ago. and we've seen the prices
continue to escalate so the homes are
appreciating between 15% and 20% a
year."

DVD.
Videos start to degenerate after
about 15 years, but a DVD w1ll lru.t
much longer. she said.
Caldwell put the video onto a DVD
and used photos from the wedding 10
make a cover. Zeiser said her daughter
was thrilled to get it as a Oiristmas
surprise.
"It made a nice gift for her," Zeiser
said. "It brought tears to her eyes. so it
worked."
His business wouldn't have been
possible a few years ago because the
equipmeni to lransfer photos and
videos onto DVD was loo pricey,
Caldwell said.
While many people now have the
equipment 10 put photos on DVD,
they often don't want to take the time
to figure out how to do ii, he said.
Transferring photos and videos is
one part of the business. bu1 it has
other applications. This month,
c:atdwell is sending out 6,000 DVDs
featuring homes for sale that he made
for an area reaJ estate firm .
He even plans to produce a DVD
tha1 instructs people how to make
t.heir own photo DVDs. As long as he
can '>ell 1J1osc, he'U s1ay in business.
he said .

loves his job.
"You get a taste of people's lives," he
~id. "It's nice to get the reaction. too,
when you do complete a project for
someone and they're really happy."

it's time for
another quiz.
Let's dive rtght in, shall
we?
First question, true
or false: The word
"ditto" hails back to the
1920s and '30s when
copying machines
known as "spirit
duplicators" were
invented and
subsequently

scares me more than
any other grammar
topic because on more
than one occasion I've
asked people to explain
10 me why you're
supposed to say. "this is
she." I go1 answers. but
I failed to understand
them.
Until today. Prodded
popularized by a company
named Dino, Inc.
If you said true, good work! It
shows you've been paying
attention to this column.
Unfortunately, you're also dead
wrong.
Last week's column explored
the origin of the expression
"ditto" and included a look back
to the days when mimeograph
machines were often called ditto
machines. All true, however I
didn't go back. far enough. As
two readers pointed out this
week. the word "ditto" precedes
the Ditto machine.
You know those little doodads
that you use instead of repeating
words in a list, as in:
June was wrong.
""way off.
" " asleep at the wheel.
Those are ditto marks.
(Actually, dirto marks are
supposed to be straight venical
lines instead of curvy quotation
marks, but my computer doesn't
have those.) And they just might
be the reason Ditto Inc., chose
to be called Ditto Inc., instead
of, say, International Making
Papers That Look. Just Like Other
Papers Consolidated
Amalgamated lnc.
Moving on. Question two: The
best way to sum up my Batgirl
aspirations as a child is, Al I
wished I was her, or B) I wished
I were her.
8, you say? Good for you.
Anyone who read the column
two weeks ago would know that
was right. And by right, of
course, I mean wrong.
Lemme 'splain.
1\vo weeks ago. I wrote about
the subjunctive: the case used to
express a wish, a hope or a
doubt that often requires lhe use
"were" instead of "was." So B
above does demonstrate the
correct use of the subjunctive.
Problem is that technically it
should be, "I wi h I were she," as
yet another rwo readers pointed
out.
Now, one {meaning I) could
argue that this was a choice. I do
know that it's correct 10 say.
"This is she," instead of "this Is
her." I know that it's correct to
say, "No one is more red-faced
than I," instead of" ... than
me. ft I know it's correct to say,
"Nobody was there but I."
I've just never understood
why.
This is the moment I've been
dreading since I 6rst came up
by Newport Beach
resident Gary Newman and
another reader whose name I've
misplaced, today is the day I
confronted my grammar
boogeyman.
I have good news and bad
news.
The good news is that it's not
wrong-wrong to say, "I wish I
were her." It's just informal. The
snooty O\icago Manual of Style
and several grammar websites I
found say that using "this is her"
instead of "this is she" is often
only a question of how formal
you want to be.
The bad news 1s that, unlike
so many grammar rules that are
surprisingly imple and
intuitive. the formal rules here
are really difficult.
For the "this is she" versus "I
wish I were her" question, the
answer lies in a little demon
called the "predicate
nominative." As I can hear the
collective swoosh of 30,000 Daily
Pilot pages preparing to tum, I'IJ
sum this up as simply as my
fledgling understanding permits
mero.
When a sentence'i. subject
refers 10 basically the same
person or the same thing as the
object. and when the verb
connecting them is some form
of "to be," well. that's the
predicate nominative. And the
rule is, in this oddball case, to
use the subject pronoun instead
of the object pronoun. I am she.
Not I am me. (When you're
choosing to be formal, that is.)
The other case -"No one is
smarter than he." "Nobody was
home but I" -is a little funkier.
In this instance the reason you
use lhe subject instead of the
object is because the pronoun
follows a conjunction, and
conjunctions mainly introduce
clauses. Therefore, you're really
saying. "Nb one is smarter than
he is," just dropping the "is."
Of course, that's for all you
formal types. TI1ose of us secure
enough in our grasp of the
language 10 loosen up a little
and bend the rules, well you
can't really accuse us of making
a "mistake," c.:an you7

Here are some of the items the
council will consider Tuestlay.
USER FEES AND CHARGES
The council will consider whether
to increase recreational fees, building
permit fees, false alarm fees and other
user fees. The last increase was made
in August 2002. Finance officials did
not recommend any new fees.
Given the total estimated revenues
for user fees and charges in the
2003-04 budget, a 2% increase could
result in uddltionaJ revenue of
$I 05,000. Whatever changes the
council adopts will be incorporated
into the fiscal year 2003-04 User Fees
and Charges.
The council continued this i1em
from its Jan. 5 meeting. This decision
was based on staff members' receiving
lots of questions about the issue from
the public and the council and on a
reques1 from Southern California

least. So, it's no
wonder he misses the game
so much these days.
This past fall was the first
season since his childhood
thal Howell had not been
totally involved with
football. For Howell. it
someumes hun.
sald he dJdn't think he was
any different and, mainly
because of football, he
enjoyed his life.
He earned a scholarsrup
to play at San Jose State.
HoweU said he, "probably
wasn't as disciplined as I
shouJd have been." and
didn't gain an average
amount of playing time
until his senior year.
Howell, however, did ·
achieve his uJtimate goal: to
receive a teaching
credential and
become a physical
education teacher
and football
coach.

Eastern Oregon State, before
he went back to coaching
high school, first at Foothill,
then a\ Costa Mesa
With the Mustangs, from
1995·2000, Howell
compiled a 40·25 record,
which included a Pacific
Coast League
co-championship in 1999.

Mustangs to a I 0·2 record.
"That was probably our
best team." llowclJ !lajd. "In
1999. when we won the
(leaguel championship. we
had some kids who worked
really hard. We were
expecting to be very
average that year. We had
some. reaJJy good kids and
athletes. We had some great
parents. They are great
people, the parents.
Howell continues to work
at Costa Mesa with football
still on his mind. I le
teaches h i<.tory and 1s chair

department.
·I loved being a coach,"
Howell said. "I don't know if
I'm dead yet. If an
opportunity came up, I
might go back and coach."
