In Costa Mesa, the houses are few . In Newport Beach,
the houses are expensive: The cheapest is $690,000.

ing search that lasted several months.
Amanda Knox found what she W<IS look·
ing for.
Knox and her husband, Oint, found a
house in Costa Mesa just last week. but
it took time.
"We've looke<l at many. many houses
and put in a rcw olTen. and had all of
our offers rejected." she said. "It's been a
roUer coaster ...
·111e Knox family's experience is not
unique. The search for homes In New-
pon-Mesa Is an exercise In patience for
most because few existing homes are
for sale and the nwnber of homes being
built is also slim.
In Costa Mesa. as of Friday, only 31
single-family homes and five condo-
miniwns were on the market. said VaJe-
rie Torelli of Torelli ReaJty.
"I can teU you that, unequivocally,
this is way below a nonnaJ market," she
said. "TI1is isn't enough inventory to last
but a few weeks."
More than 200 homes arc 1m llw mar-
ket in Newport Beac.:h, Torelli i.aid. Out
with the cheapest of those at $690,000
and the most expensive at $19.9 million.

I've often wondered why the sergeant

Operating a women-only facility is a linle
different than a coed gym because women
want a place that's social and supportive
rather than competitive. Dhalla said.
The gym has retained many of its client!.
and added a few new ones, but Dhalla said
she won't expand the membership
indefinitely because she wants to keep
providing personal anention to her clients
and keep the gym from getling too crowded.
"I 1J1ink it's just kind of built up the
excitement about working out again." she
said.

which was a bit of a career change from her
pl'l'vious work in the entertainment
indu.o;try.
"We always want to make sure if you
come in between 5 and 7 J>..m., you're going

to get on." she said.

Of course, this is a
language column,
restricted to
discussion of thin~
such as words and
phrases and
sentences, so I'll
close this discussion
by leaving you with
just this one
sentence: MWhat's communists or even
lawyers. The worst monsters
terrorizing our society are,
without a doubt, soccer
moms.
I have no evidence, of
course. But I, a language
person, don't need evidence.
With my superhero sensibility
for words and the way people
use them, I see this truth all
too clearly in the way people
spealc these two, most
terrifying words.

moms, students, and other
users of residenliaJ streets
who stonn through
intersections under the
influence of nothing more
than an attitude problem and
the self-absorbed belief that
the whole world is about them
are more deserving of having
their morality questioned.·
Perhaps we could dismiss
such a vitriolic statement if it
were the rambling of a lone
sufferer or an Oedipus
complex. But. on the contrary,
this sentiment is everywhere.
I submit to you Exhibit No.
2, also from a Daily Pilot letter
to the editor.
"I watch soccer moms in
their wban assault vehicles
full of children running
through the stops and
endangering pedestrians.·
So I type the tenn into the
Los Angeles Times archives.
Lo and behold, I find stuff like
this:
• "It is ironic that all those
soccer moms and dads who
drive polluting SlNs are
poisoning the very dlildren
those behemoths are
purchased to protect";
• "And if you think lhe
soccer mom is a fanatically
devoted creature ... ";
• "Would the outrage and
outcry be as great if the driver
had been a 30-something
soccer mom in a vehicle the
size or a semi-truck?";
• "The gist [oflV sitcom
'Hope and Faith): A
control-frealc soccer mom
must learn to cope with her
diva actress sister."
One of the reasons I like
words is that sometimes they
teU us a lot more than the
speaker intended to let on.
And in light of the fact that
almos1 everyone who puts the
word ~soccer" next to the
word "mom" does so with
venom in his or her voice, I
everybody's problem with
women who drive kids to
pons practice?" One more
sentence: "For heaven's sake.
let's find a more deserving
group to beat up on." OK. just
one more: "Stop picking on
~cermoms."
And don't get me started on
the word "diva."
Moving on ....
A while back. I dedicated a
column to ·Reader Peeves." Of
course. these peeves were
limited to grammar and
language stuff. So as long as
I'm ranting. we'll go ahead
and call this column "Writer
Peeves" and list a couple of
language habits that irk me.
"Irregardless." What's up
with that? The dictionary
defines this as. basically.
"regardJess. ·So why not use
the intelligent-sounding one
instead?
"Horrific." Now. this one is a
personal peeve. It's a perfectJy
legitimate word, often used
qulte correctly and effectively.
I just happen to hate it The
reason I hate It is because it
became popular right around
the time people had so
overused the word "horrible"
that it had seemed to lose all
meaning. Their solution:
Spout something that sounds
like ·terrifically horrible."
Yeah, that'll make people
listen.
"A whole 'nother." How
about, "a whole other," ·an
entirely different," ·a
completely dislinct," "a totally
separate," "a whole new" -
anything but "'nother."
"TorrentiaJ rain." Tame to
find an adjective that hasn't
become a hollow cliche.
"Profusely," as in "sweating
profusely" or "bleeding
profusely": A word people say
without thinking, just because
it sound'> lik.c it's got some
oomph.
I hope this little mentaJ
brealcdown has convinced any
abusers of these temts to
change their ways. If not, I just
may have to hijack a Oievy
Subwban, load it up with
sports equlpment and people
under 18, and vnleash my
horrible fury on the world.

where Buddy Belshe feels at
home. He's at peace. lt has
been a place with a sense of hom e for
the past 55 years.
Belshe, who worked 27 full-time
years as a Ufeguan:I for Newpon Beach,
continues bis career as a seasonal
lifeguard. This spring. he will enter his
J 7th year as a sea90nal lifeguard,
wodd.ng along the shores of Corona del
Mar.

when he was 3, was raised in

"I grew up on the beach,· Belshe
said . "My dad had me knowing what rip
currents were at a young age. We used
to be able to jump off the pier before It
became illegal. I knew I wanted to be a
lifeguard. I could tell If people were In
trouble. It was jus t In my blood."
The dream of following his father lnto
the profession became a reality four
days before Belshc's 16th birthday. He
starred out patroUing the big surf at
Huntington Beach, where there were
days he would make 60-70 rescues.
#I've had people tell me because
they've known me for so long they
rigured I have made over 5,000
