EDUCATION Officials proud of exit exam success As district pats itself on back, state is rethinking graduation requirement. Less than 50% passed both sections statewide. Deirdre Newm.n Dady Pilot Newport-Mesa Unified School Dis- trict officials are crediting the imple- mentation of district standards from four years ago for the high rate of suc· cess being seen on the high school exit ex.ams. The district's standards are closely aligned with the stale standards. which the exit exam is based on. The grade- spedfic standards spell out what stu- dents should know. As of March, 2002, 86~ of district stu- dents have passed the English/lan- guage arts portion of the exit exam and 71% have passed the math section. This Is higher than the overall county aver- age for both portions. UCJ found out Monday that It received a five-year, $14-rnlllJon grant from the National Science Founda- tion for a new math anded- ence education partnenbip program called FOCUS. The record grant is the largest the university has re- cetved lrom the NSP. The school was the only one in the Western United States to receive the comprehen- sive award. The foundation distrib- utes the awards to unite the activities of higher educa- tion and elementary. mid- dle and high schools. South Coast Fine Art Festival debuts The Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort will host the flrat South C.Oaat Fine Art.I Festival, which will showcase various works of art by a diverse group of artiats and help Orange County children in the process. The art displays will in- clude paintings, ceramics, photography, woodwork. glassware and jewelry, all of which will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the event will go to the South Coast Oilldren's Society. a non- profit organization in Costa Mesa that provides homes, care and treatment to abused and neglected children in Orange County. Aside from the art dis- plays, the festival will also Include artist workshops and demonstrations, an arts and crafts workshop for children, live entertain- ment and a cuisine catered by the resort. The two-tiered management structure would also be necessary if a non-academic dean was to lead the school, Pearce added. So Pearce turned to two longtime col- leagues as vice deans: Mary Gilly. who is in charge of academic affairs, and Joanna Ho, who will oversee the MBA program. While it is unusual to have three women presiding over a business schooL the trio prefers 10 focus on their goals for the future rather than their gender. Finl and foremost is raising the morale within the business school and its visibility to the outside wortd. Many of Blake's critics had complained that the marketing resources for the school were misguided. "We haven't done a good job of communi- cating wftlt Our programs are," Pearce said. Pearce. who has been at UCI since 1979. said one of her lop priorities is to help the business school adapl to the changing world around it. One of her first steps was changing the school's focus to downplay information technology. -Before. IT was something broad in the dot-com days,· Pearce said. -Now IT is more narrow. A lot of lrn companies collapsed un- der their feet." Pearce's background is in industrial organi- zational psychology. which involves applying psychology 10 organizations. Working at vari- ous jobs throughout college, she said she was cons1antly appalled by communication breakdowns in the workplace. One of the highlights of her academic ca- reer was 1eaching one of the first MBA classes behind the Iron Curtain. after communism collapsed in Hungary. "I -.aid I had to do this because this will only happen once," Pearce said. "Commu- nism will only fall once." But the biggest victory the program may have coUected during that time took place in the Fountain Valley High library, where those charged with Orange C:Ounty releaguing plucked the school from the Pacific C:Oast League and placed it in the Golden West League, for a four-year cyde beginning this fall. Perhaps Golden Opportunity League would be a more accurate title for this configuration of football also-rans, whose win-I~ --records during the aforementioned decade makes Mesa a comparative dyn~. Tutaling the combined records of Golden West "rivals" Estancia (40-56-1), Ocean Vie:w BARRY (27-75-1), Orange (28-73-1), FAULKNER Saddleback (38-63-1), Santa Ana (16-85) and Westminster (42-62-1) reveals a cumulative 191-415-5 mark from 1992-2001. This translates to a winning percentage of 31.7%, roughly half the number posted by Mesa during the same lime frame (63.8% with a 67-38 mark). The six teams with which Costa Mesa will compete, beginning Friday when the Mustan~ kick off their first Golden West League campaign against Ocean Vie:w at Westminster High, have posted just 11 winning seasons in those 10 years, while also coUectively recording eight winless campaigns, seven with just one win and nine more with just two.
