And it isn't only on the national or global scene, though immediate access to the political pages of papers across the country or those covering the Hill is a junkie's perfect fix. It's the local information one can get to. especially the unfiltered Web sites of political candidates. A previous column listed the Internet sites for many of the candidates for statewide races. But those running for arguably the most Influential S.J. CAHN seats-city council and school board -are nor without their campaign beadqwuurs in cyberspace. What ls somewhat Shocking is that -at least via a thorough, though perhaps not exhaustive. sean:h-not more candidates have one. lo Costa Mesa, Allan Mamoor, a member of the city's Human Relations Committee, and Planning Commission Chair Iatrtna Foley have the notable Web sites. Both, of course. offer the opportunity for a visitor to support the campaign financially. More importantly, both give the full run of statements. philosophies and backgrounds -Mansoor is a member of the National Rifle Aasn. and the California Republican Assembly. for instance. Individually, Mansoor's interesting link is under "photos" at his site. a!lanmansoor.com. Those links include snapshots of different parts of town, notably the Westside. and allow him to suggest where city planners could have done better in their decision-making (the comparison shots between Costa Mesa and Newport Beach are especially illuminating). Those pbotos certainly provide a look into Mansoor's thoughts on the city. Foley's includes a running list of supporter~. so voters can find out if anyone they know is in her camp -not a bad strategy, and the one behind sticking signs in front yards. She also clearly lays out her campaign platform, which covers a gambit of issues from blighted housm~ to improving efficiency in City Hall. In Newport Beach. the Greenlight slate of candidates are all lumped together at newportgreenlight.com. It's irlteresting because it sets up the dynamic, which not all of the non-Greenlight candidates believe is even close to fair, of a straight ahead pro-and anti-Greenlight election. Otis not interesting. for those who go there, because a previous column of mine is excerpted.) But is strOngly indicates that while the Newport Beach election thus far has not turned nasty, there are the maJdngs for a mud-t:browing. name-calling battle worthy of the old party machines. On one side we will have Madelene Anbllan, Allan Beek. Dick Nk:hola and Richard Taytor, on the other Guy Ad.um, Tod Ridgeway. 8emle 9vabtad and Don Webb. Where t:be other candidates. Laura Dlett. R.on Winship and M~ 1Jppl, flt in I suppose is anyone's guess. After a search with several search engines. that is the extent of Web sites that pop easily 10 the screen, none for those running for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of lhlstees. It is a shame there are not-more because, ultimately. the better infonned a voter is. the better the elected officials should be. After all, Newport Beach is a destination spot. a tourist attraction. much to the chagrin of some folks we lcnow. But you can't change what you are. So, it is with open anns that we welcome Marta Hayden as the executive director of the bureau as she lcnows what Newport is and has good ideas on how it can fulfill that role. Some may recall that the bureau came into prominence into the first half of the 1990s under the leadership of the late Rosalind Williams. Wtlliams recognired the value of tourism and promoted Newport Beach as a resort town that visitors could venture to year round. For example, Williams was legendary for paying close attention to the college football season to see just which team would be coming to the Rose Bowi that year. Then she'd do her best to get them to stay in Newport Beach, pumping up the hotel and tourism industry during the winter, a time normally written off as loss. Before her death. Wtlliams was able to present the Newport Beach Oty Council with a symbolic check of $21 million - a swn that represented the tax benefits the city received for tourism in a given year. Unfortunately, after Williams' death, the leadership of the visitors bureau hasn't been quite the same and the abrupt departure early this year of her replacement. John Cassady, made that painfully clear. So our hope is that Hayden will restore the spirit and energy that was indicative of the visitors bureau in the past. Her experience in Monterrey, another upscale beach tommunity in Northern California, should serve her well here. We hope she is able to again make Newport Beach, and even Cosca Mesa, attractive to those who want the best \n beaches, shopping and entertainment. Judging by her comments in a recent interview, ~it's getting all of these wonderful mosaic pieces that make up the jewel that we have and making people aware of it." it looks like she knows how to put those pieces in place. READERS RESPOND Main Street ficus discussion continues AT ISSUE: Letters to the editor greatly outnumber the 2 of 25 trees that remain on the Balboa Peninsula street. F icus trees are beautiful and they improve with age. lf you have ever had to replace the entire sewer line from your house to the center of the street, after a back-up into every drain in the house, and all because of two old ficus trees, then you would know that Balboa Village is correct to replace those invasive trees. Why not plant orchid trees and palms? Something tropical for the ocean front. The tree they have been discussing as a replacement has long thorns. Sony. Balboa Arbor Society. why not just get with the program and decide on another beautiful tree. MARCEUA KIRST Newport Beach Please. Can these Newport people step outside their sheltered little lives for one moment? I only wish I had their problems that the most important thing in my life is to ftgbt the city on whether or not some ficus trees (that was damaging other people's property) get cut down or if my dog can go on the beach without a leash ("Newport can dghten leash," Sept. 5). I shudder to think of the amount of money the city has bad to waste defending themselves againat these self-important people who have w.y too much money and dme on their hands that they feel th'Y can go around wasting othen. Personally, I would rather have seen that money go to improving schools and other areas that would improve the community as a whole and not just a few. In the past year, thousands of people lost their lives, many more their loved ones, we're fighting terrorism, and people are worried about their dog on a leash? I would suggest getting a little perspective on life. Do you think we can we move on now? CATHY COLEMAN Newport Beach I'm trying to get a group together to file a class-action suit against the city because they've allowed all of these eucalyprus trees lo Corona del Mar to block everybody's views. I've got a picture of a view I had seven to eight years ago and the city trees now are blocking my view to a point where it is now diminishing the value of my home. What kind of a price do you put on that? The city is not trimming the trees back the way they should be, they're getting diseased. The trees are blocking people's views now and I nUgbt get a group to me a class-action suit. I know if I went to sell my house now It would be worth a lot leas than it woulft if I had the view seven years ago. •DEGRADEL Corona del Mar .. • FU PHOTO /ONLY PILOT John Wayne's former home on Bay Shore Drive is set for demQlition sometime this month. Treat John Wayne's home just like Elvis' 'Gracel2nd' I think it's very sad and selfish of the Cohens to want to tear down· their house, which happens to be the house John Wayne lived in ("Duke's home near last roundup," Sept. 25). Too bad it can't be turned into a "Graceland." I, for one, would have liked to see what it looks like. First, the Port Theater gets tom down, then they want to tear down the Ice Capades Chalet, then Kona Lanes ... now John Wayne's house? What's next? Tear down South Coast Plaza and tum it into an outdoor mall like Fashion Island? JUDITH HUNT Costa Mesa Costa Mesa tr~ some help ... and Jess pruning While trees are a regular topic of local discussion (I refer to the controversy over the ficus trees on Balboa Peninsula's Main Street), I am writing out of a long-held and deeply felt concern for the welfaie of Costa Mesa's {Tree City?) trees. Not a month has passed since we {residents of Costa Mesa) received the August/September "Costa Mesa Live: News From City HaW stating: "Trees are one of Costa Mesa's greatest assets. Not only do trees improve property values, they are also one of nature's greatest tools in helping us keep our environment clean and cool .... Trees also create shade. allowing air conditioners to run less and landscapes to need less irrigation. The reduced demand for electricity and water results in other pollution reduction benefits." I could not agree more, but I must hasten to point out that very few of the street trees in Costa Mesa provide much in the way of s,hade, due to overly enthusiastic pruning by whomever the city has contracted with to "care for" the city's trees. Moreover, so much of the tree canopy is removed that it must jeopardize their very survival. Also, the ameliorative effects for the environment are greatly depleted by over pruning. Does the city contract with a certified arborist for the care of its trees? I find it very difficult to believe that this is the case and respectfully suggest that further professional opinions be requested before every Costa Mesa tree is ruined. I have no wish to sound strident, but I care too much for my home city to sit back and watch while what could be one of its finest features is destroyed. SHARON K. EKLOF Costa Mesa C.Osta Mesa mayor never fought for El Toro airport ln the Sept. 28 edition of the Pilot, there was an article about the recent candidate debate {"No knockouts in Costa Mesa debate"). It said that "Mansoor charged that Dixon did not fight aggressively enough to get an airport at the former El Thro Marine Base." Actually, she didn't fight at all to get an airport there. She did not oppose Measure W, whlch was our only hope to keep John Wayne Airport from expanding, By doing this, she not only dropped the ball for Team Costa Mesa but she picked it up, ran in the wrong direction and scored a touchdown for the opposition. Go team. AU.AN R. MANSOOR Costa Mesa • EDITOR'S NOTE: Allan R. Manaoor 11 a Costa Mesa Chy Council candidate. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Pilot should consider retiring Bell Curve columnist I do not understand why the Daily Pilot would run Joseph Bell's Sept. 26 column (The Bell Curve, "Pondering a serious white-out"). This column was not sly, nor tongue-in-cheek funny. This column and BelJ did a great disservice to Newport Beach and its residents of all races and ethnicities. I strongly suggest that the Daily Pilot retire Bell permanently as a columnist. DAVIO MIU£R Balboa Peninsula No one but C.Osta Mesa voters must make city's decisions in their letter in support of opening a massive free clinic in Costa Mesa that will be a magnet for !UegaJ Immigrants (Sounding Board, "CHOC center discussion should focus on children"), Quynh JCieu and Burton Willis tell readers that "pediatricians put children's health first -no matter who the child. It is not the place of pediatricians or children's hospitals to set or debate our government's immigration policy.· Right. It is up to the citizens of Costa Mesa to debate these matters and to determine what is best for our city. Letting pediatricians who don't live in Costa Mesa dictate that a clinic is going to go into this city Is wrong. For too long, Costa Mesans have seen decisions made for this city by people who can't vote here. Now, more and more citizens are demanding the right to determine the future of this city, free from the distortions that are caused when people who can't vote here dictate to those who can. MARTIN Mll.lARO Costa Mesa Steeple unnecessary to get closer to God I i is unfortunate that lessons of old have not been learned today ("Height of Mormon steeple contradicted," Wednesday). Is there a compromise that can be reached over the height of the proposed Mormon temple? Rather than residents, city staff and church officials warring over this question, wouldn't it best be answered by God, through Jesus Otrlat. from whence the name "Oiwch of Jesus Cluist o( Latter-day Saints" comes from? About 7,000 years ago, man labored in vain to build a tower that would reach to the beaw:na so that one Icing could test his throne closer to God, to be as God, and to better oversee and rule over his subjects. God .destroyed this tower of Babel and dispersed mankind into races each with new languages to prevent the folly of man from attempting to rule as God. Jesus Quist taught "that the kingdom of God Is within you." Luke 17:21. This was later revealed to mean that, to be close to God did not mean erecting the highest, most glorious "building .. in which to worshJp in; it meant humbling oneself to allow the spirit of God to enter one's own temple (man's body. mind and soul through his heart) to allow God to commune and fellowship whh man personally, through the perfect sacrifice of his son Jesus Olrist, by recognizing that sin, not the height of our throne Is what separates us from God. Yet today, we still have •ldngs" enslaving men to build glorious man-made "idols," teaching that believing in and woBhiping them will bring mankind closer to God. and some go as far aa to promiae to become Gods. Tu believe that building a great temple will bring you closer to God Is just pure fooliBhness, and proves that the greatest downfall of modem man is llliteracy. Those seeking to get cloeer to God need not stones or steeples. they only need to ta.Ice refuge in the living word of God and forsake the foollsbness of man and the things made by man. CdM aims to settle score Sea Kings host Cypress in nonleague rematch of teams that h ave battled even on scoreboard over the past two football campaigns. Barry Faulkner Daily Pilot NEW- PORT BP.ACH - Coming off a disap- pointing 17-0 loss to Newport Harbor in its biggest rivalry game, the Corona del Mar High football team is faced with a su- preme rubber game with non- league visitor Cypress Friday at 7 p.m. at Newport Harbor High. The Centurio ns and Sea Kings have split the last two seasons, with each scoring 52 points In the series. CdM (2-1), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division IX. won last year's clash, 42-17, after Cypress (2-1), unranked in OF otvWon VI, earned a SS-10 tliumpb lo 2000. Bar ry Faulkner Daily Pilot NEW- PORT BF.ACH - On the sur- face, the only thing equal about Sat· urday's 7 p.m. Golden Wei..t League-opening football matchup between Estancia High and visiting Westminster would appear to be the two teams' re- cords. Estancia is further handi- capped by injury ac; ~nior rt"· turning standout Lewis Brad- sh aw will not play any quarterback and is expected to be held out on defense after spraining a shoulder against Ka- teUa. Brndshaw had been sharing quarterback chores with junior and have fumbled 16 time!) in three games, though losing just six. KiclcotT returns of 95 yards (against Woodbridge) and 93 yards (against Foothill) have ac- counted for roughly two-thirds of their 23 points this season and their offense is averaging just fewer than I 03 yards per game. This does not bode well against a Harbor defense that appears to have figured things out, after opening the season with just two returning starters. The Sailors held a previously productive CdM running game to mlnus-1 yard in the second half last week and just 83 for the game. The Sea Kings added fust 24 passing yards to that total as Brad Young. who went the dis- tance against Katella and will be expected to do the same this week. Young has completed 16 of 32 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown. But, with minus-35 yards on 20 rushing anempts, he has not been as effective as Brad- shaw triggering the split-veer op- tion. After collecting just 15 rushing yards against KateDa. the Eagles are averaging just 98 yards per game on the ground. They have also fumbled 13 times. losing eight, to help account for a mi- nus-seven turnover ratio. Estrada is expected to start, Noonan said. Junior fullback Hubba Kaplco leads the f.agfes in rushing with 129 yards and three TDs on 22 carries.
