Alicia Robinson · Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Planning a wedding takes time, and for some people prepar- ing to tie the knot. the planning begins now. Because many people gel engaged between the December holidays and Valentine's Day. by this time of year. couples have wedding planning on their minj:I, ~aid wedding consultant Judy Feenstra. who has helped put together weddings in Costa Mesa fo r more than 30 years. After se111ng the wedding date and choosing the location for the event. many brides-to-be start looking for a photographer. said John Blom. who runs a photo.,rraphy business in Cocona del Mar. Those accouterments will be showcased this month at South Coast Plaza, marketing director Debra Gu.nn Downing said. This is the third year the shopping venue has focused on weddings in Feb- ruary. S..P .. tA5 S hortJy after I broke up witJl my girlfriend Angel, I took a job as a clerk at a health food store in Costa Mesa. The job pald slightly above minimum wage. and my weekly hours were always kept slightly below the number at whJch the owners would have to provide me t>enefl1s. But the store was just a couple of blocks from my apartment and offered me a big employee discount inside Its full-service restaurant. so I was happy. I've never been a big fan of health food, and never less so than when I was In my early 208. Raised in a Puerto Rican household, I found the very thought of putting anything in my body that wasn't DAVID SILVA fried, pork-based o r heavily salted almost offensive. My culinary sensibilities had been a constant source of annoyance to Angel, a lapsed vegetarian who pined for the lost days of falafel and pineapele-tofu boats. She would blanch every time she carn_e home and found me happily slicing away at a bloody-rare steak. and would shriek every time I would sprinkle salt on her vegetarian dishes. "Why are you pouring that heart poison on my Afghan potatoes7" she'd shout. "You h aven't even lasted them yet!" 'Tm sorry," I'd say. "They just - looked llke they needed salt." • On the day Angel finally moved out. I celebrated with a plate of prime rib and a side of pork rinds. But my gastronomic excesses changed the day I took that job at the heaJth food store. Compelled by economic reality to make liberal use or my store discount. I waved a tearful goodbye to beef ribs and hot dogs, and bade an even more tearful heUo to the world ofsoy "Whibs" and "Not Dogs." If my new diet hadn't been so bland and unappeaJing, I would havt found the restaurant's reliance on meat ubstitutes hilarious. It seemed IWlosl hypocritical that ln an establishn9 that catered to vegetarians. every other Item on the menu was designed to look -if not taste -like the very foods vegetarians considered unwholesome. "Why the ruse?" I complained bitterly lo my co-worker, Pete, who was h1mself a vegetarian. "Why do you guys torture yourselves like that? To find out, let's first explore our hypothetical scenario a the opportunity to obstruct my view or traffic, thereby endangering my safety by rendering me unable to see life· threatening road hv.ards just a few yards ahead of me. bit further. Let's say, hypothetically, that I That would mean that I'm a discriminating jerk to JUNE drivers or SUVs. A 101 of hate these vehicles not CASAGRANDE people want to put an for the most common reasons -fuel inefficiency, rollover dangers. general silliness -but for an even heller reason: Sport utility vehicles obstruct my view of traffic, hypotheticiilly spealdng of course. Just as some people (al least one I know of) protest the presence of these vehicl~ on the freeways by not letting them cut into traffic, others protest the widespread confusion about acronyms and aposO"Ophes by writing to me. And. as always, I protest my own ignorance by opening a book and pestering copy editors. Acronyms are a no-no at most newspapers. Pretty much every single copy editor l"ve ever heard discuss the topic has used an identical term: •aJphabet soup." If you write, ·Tue CIA and the FBI will investigate the EIR and investments in an IRA affiliated with an HMO PDQ,· readers just !rind or glaze over. So you can wort at a newspaper a hundred years and never have to learn how to deal with acronyms. I was well into that hundred·year blissful ignorance when on Friday I realized I needed a column I-Opie and dipped into my bonomless magic carpetbag of stuff I don't. know. Lo and behold, now I know. And the answers are surprisingly simple. Most acronyms use capital leners and don't get periods. Period. A sport utility vehicle is an SUV. The Central lntelllgence Agency is the CIA. A chief executive officer is a CEO. An environmental impact report is an EIR. The last two examples are also a clues to a mistake I've seen a lot. Many people seem 10 think that any term that has a popular acronym must necessarily be capitalized. Not so. An environmental impact report b not a proper name, but its acronym is capitalized. OK? Now we know that one vehicle I may not let in front of me in traffic is an SUV (and we can al l chant together: "hypothetically'"). Bui how about more than one? Say that in my SO-mile commute I manage 10 deny four or five such vehicles a chance to get in front or me every single day. That means four or five huge walls on wheels don't get apostrophe in there, just as a lot or people want 10 sit taller than others as they drive down the freeway, a clear view all the way to the hori:ron. But there's no need. With most acronyms. no aposcrophe is needed before the S when you malce it plural. As you've probably guessed. there are exceptions and, more annoying, contradictions between some authorities. For academic titles, for example. the ClUcago Style Manual and the Associated Press Style Guide both say to use periods: Ph.D .. MA The Los Angeles Times Style Guide says Lo omit the periods: PhD. But these sources disagree on the plural forms. Olicago says that for "abbreviations with two or more interior periods or with both capital and lowercase letters Corm the plural with an apostrophe and an s." So your faculty consists of M.A's and Ph.D.'s. But ln Los Angeles TI mes Style, it would be PhDs. See why so many people hate grammar? Allow me to give you a simple guideline that won't please aU the people aU the time, but will give you a defensible option: No periods and no apostrophes ... uniess (you knew that was coming. didn't you7) following those rules malces your meaning less clear. for example. if you're writing a sign that will be posted on the wall of a bank and the sign reads in all capitals, KWE OFFER CD'S f.NO !RA'S: Go ahead and put in the apostrophes becayse that's the only way to ~e it clear that the s isn't pan or the acronym. If anyone gives you any grief, go al1ead and invoice my authority: MJune said I could." Dino for "mind your p's and q's" and similar case!> in which the apostrophe is the only way 10 malce clear what you're trying lo say. So. when you see a hypothetical bumper sticker on a hypothetical Hyundai that says, ·1 DON'T BRAKE FOR suv·s .• you'll know that the hypothetical driver isn't crazy or even jealous.
