the gila. It might expand to

about a one-Inch thickness.
and this was ample to hold the
file of an average lawsuit.
In 1969. when I went to the
Court of Appeal [rom the
Superior Court, my Superior
Court staff gave me a fancy
new briefcase as a going-away
·present. nus one was about
three inches wide. but it would
still hold the rue of an average
lawsuit.
I eventually retired from the
Court of Appeal. After spending
an enjoyable year or two on the
beath developing my skin
cancers. I wen! to American
Samoa for a three-year tenn on
the High Court. Presiding in a
gray serge lava lava, I had no
need of a briefcase. Returning
from Samoa, I spent several
more years on the beach,
further ensuring the ftnanciaJ
weU-being of my
dennatologlst, and then went
back 10 the Superior Court on
assignment.
A huge change had taken
place In the Interim. Once
again back on the bench. I wa~
exposed to a new generation,
not jus1 of lawyers, bu1 of their
briefcases or, as they should be
termed, briefboxes, because
that's what they had become -
big leather boxes 10 to 12
inches across that one wouJd
think would be more than large
enough to hold the file of an
average lawsuit.
Not at aJJ. The lawyers came
ln with their brielboxes plus
annloads of papers for even
the most piddling lawsuit. The
lawsuits were the same as they

plan in 1972 but has done little

eliminatin g runoff altogether. he

will pollute p rotected areas
along the coast between Corona
del Mar State Beach and Crystal
Cove State Park.

the ocean, where any runoff is
now illegal.

County's 42-mile coast, that's
one of the few areas we haven't
already (messed) up.'' he said.

Plans are in place to clean up
a junk-strewn Dover Drive
home, but even the people
who will do the work have
said thar it's too early to be
~urc that Lhe 40-year problem
will soon be solved.
An independent hearing
officer in December declared

1918 Dover Drive to be a pub-
lic nuisance. The officer or-
dered Thom assen to clean up
the propeny. The deadline for

trict attorney off the case, it

tom ey general. Atty. Gen. Bill
Lockyer filed an opinion last
month in Orange County Su ·
perior Court stating that he did
not see a conflict of lnterest and
that the videotape was enough to
suppon the charges.
"The videotape is the mos! im·
portant piece of evidence in the
case," Rackauckas said.
"This is a 16-year-old girt. she's
unconscious. and the tape will
show that,· he said.
The tape is significan l evi·
dence, but has been overplayed
by the prosecution, said Joseph

Foley's plan had called for the
ronnation of a Costa Mesa ans
and music scholar grants pro·
gram. Since only about $630,000
of the total would be necessary
for the public improvemen ts.
Foley's plan suggested that at
least $300.000 of the rest be aUo·
cated for an arts and music
scholar program. This would
have funded programs. produc·
tions, courses. field trips and
scholarships for Costa Mesa
public school students ages 4
through 18.

4. Increased exercise while

operating hours.
7. Fabulous bargain . You can
purchase many items at a
two-for-one or four-for-one

8. Many "non-union ..
markets are cheaper.

notion that some of the people
can be fooled all of the Lime -
by union leaders.

del Mar Centennial Celebration
Plan for later thls year. You
"reported this subject in an
excellent mi&nner. Now. I wish
to add further comment to this
aspect of the overall plan for the
centennial celebration. This is a
response to your origi nal Sl<V)'.
For me. I have inve ted nearly
12 years of personal volunteer
time on quality endeavors for
Corona del Mar via the
chamber of commerce, the
business improvement dbtrict
and a small business enterprise
on East Coast Highway. My
volunteer involvement is
ongoing through vari ous
planning endeavors for the
incredible Corona del Mar
Cen tennial Celebration. I am
doing what I can as a
community member to help as
• much as possible. ' .
It is obvious to most that the
centennial planning leaders
have prepared a world-class
idea for a world-class
community at a wofld-class site
-Inspiration Point. Also. the
sculpture artist, Wyland, for
sure is a world-class Individual,
having proven his worth all
around our globe. Corona del
Mar is very fortunate to have
.. him excited about worklng on
thJs incredible monument for
our community. This is a "big
deal." No other possible idea
could top this one as a forever
memorial to Corona del Mar's
centennial birthday celebration
This time capsule and dolphins
sculpture is a world-class.
everlasting idea. perfectly
suited for our world-class
community.
Inspiration Point Is a perfect
location for this special time ·
capsule and dolphins sculpture.
along with the personal
memorial plaques underwritten
by residents and famUies of our
community. This site Is begging
for a refreshing idea of thls
caliber to take place. The site
will be greatly enhanced with
this proposal. Inspiration Point
has most of the public
infrastructure required already
in place. It has walk.Ing access
to and from Big Corona State
Beach. It Is located centrally
along the bluff-top wal~y.
Curbside park.Ing aJready exists.
It will not obstruct views from
local residential homes. In
summary. Inspiration Point will
be enhanced tremendously
with this special addition, as
will the neighborhood and our
community.
It is rare ln one's lifetime that
community leaders can
participate in the planning and
decision-making process of
something as everlasting as this
centennial monument idea.
This time capsule and dolphins

after we and our surviving
families are gone. It will be
there many hundreds of years
later for those living here to
