Jennifer Keller, the attorney
who defended the teenage driver

son Rausch, signed on as the
campaign treasurer for Bridg-
man's opponent, Kelly Mac.Each-
em. Both Bridgman and
MacEachem are deputy district
attorneys and residents of New-
port Beach.

Rausch was ultimately sen-
tenced to three years of proba·
tion, rather than jail time. for the
death of Bridgman's son.
At the time. Bridgman criti-
cized the verdict as too lenient,
saying: ·1 don't think my family
got a fair shake."

The Orange C.Ounty Marine Wildlife
Refuge Project is a collaborative effort of
the cities of Newport Beach, Laguna Beach
and Dana Point, as well as the county of
Orange and other agencies. The group's

contains four tide pool tips for anyone
visiting them.
Rule No. I: Never remove animals shells
or rocks from the Cide pools. Even taking
things out for brief Inspection can cause
animals and plants to die, at the same time
killing crucial links in the natural balance

bas resubmitted a scaled-down
housing project that calls for four,
two·story homes on a
27,800-square-foot lot after city
leaders told him his previous
proposal was too dense for the
single-family area

originally submitted a proposal for
five single-family houses at 258 Santa
lllbel bu.t waa unanimously turned
down ~both the Planning
Commis&ion and the Oty Council.
which refused to grant him a
de\ltation from the city's new lot size
requirements.
Councilwoman Karen Robinson
said Khosravi bad ~done a nice jbb.
on the project but that the proposed
lots were simply too small for the
nelghborhood. She encouraged rum
to return with 6,000-square-foot
lots.
Khosravi has, as his new plans call
for two lot aizes al 6,203 squlife feet
and the other two at 6,366. The
houses are configured around a
common driveway and only two
wo.uld face the street, a staff report
reads.
WHAT TO EXPECT
When they denied the project
initially, council members
acknowledged that some type of
multi-unit project would take the
place of the existing apartment
complex but wanted to make sure the
single-family houses were large
enougti to fit with the surrounding
Eastside neighborhood. Because the
proposed lots have reached the
6,000-square-foot benchmark:,
planning commissioners are expl'<'tt~cl
to approve the project.
WENDY'S LATE NIGHT
Wendy's restaurant's recent •tate
night" campaign bas hit a snag with
at least one Costa Mesa resident, as
an EastsJde man· is appealing the
city's recent approval of longer hours
at the fast food chain.
Neighbor Robert Small. who lives
behind the busy 17th Street fast food
stop. wants the Planning Commission
to reconsider the city zoning
administrators decision to allow
Wendy's ,drive-th.rough window to
stay open until midnight daily, saying
the noise from people who are out
that late is too much to bear.
The drive-through window Is
currentJy open until 11 p.m. but the
fast food cha.in asked for an extension
until I am. to draw business from
late night crowds. Zoning
admilUstraior Perry VaJantine
authorized the m.idrtlght benchmark
as a compromise.
According to a staff report,
planners do not think an additional
hour of business would create too
much noise, since the coffee shop
next door also stays open until
midnight. Wendy's dining room
closes at 10 p.m. and the late nigh1
traffic would only be in the
drive-through, located at the front of
the site, the report read~.

MONTE VISTA PROJECT
An East.side propeny owner will ask
the Planning Commission to consider
plans for three, two-story houses on a
l 5, 159-square-foot lot.
Joe Cefalia, the owner of 373 Monte
Vista Ave., has proposed consuuction
of three single-family homes each
with an average lot siu of 3,990
square feet, according to a staff
report. Each home would have three
bedrooms, a bonus room and a
two-car garage.
The plans are subject to design
review but meet all applicable city
codes, the report reads.

THE HISTORY
On May 23, 1997, Bridgman's
life was permanently changed.
Driving the Bridgman family's
Olevy Blazer, Rausch crashed as
be drove a carload of nine other
teens south on Irvine Avenue, af-
ter a night of partying in Santa
·Ana Heights.
Donny Bridgman was killed
in the wreck. l\vo other teens,
cheerleader Amanda Arthur
and Daniel Townsend, suffered
lasting brain damage from their
injuries. The case stirred emo-
tions throughout the Newport
Beach community and sparked
a bevy of a lawsuits.
The District Attorney's office
charged Rausch. who police said
was driving 67 mph tn a 35-mph
woe. with manslaughter. During
a three-month trial that wrapped
up at the end of February 1998,
Kdler's la~g was credited
with helping Rausch ultimately
receive a sentence that included
no jail time.
Keller Introduced testimony
that opened up the possibility
that the road was slippery on the
nigltt of the crash. due to sprin-
klers. Keller also attacked the tes·
timony of the other teenagers
who were in the car on that night
and bad testified again.st Rausch.
Keller dted their blood-alcohol
levels, which were almost double
the legal limit In some Instances,
as evidence that their testimony
and observations weren't de-
pendable.
She maintained that the crash
was caused by a Blazer that had
been Wl88fely jacked up and bad
tneftective brakes and steering.
Sbe also said the roadway was
bnproperty lighted and banked
at the time.
Remembering the trial five
yeani later, Bridgman said she is
sdD troubled by Keller's tactics
durtng the trial.

On Feb. 26, 1998, a jury con·
W:ted Rausch of a reduced
charge of misdemeanor whicu-
lar manslaughter. In May 1998,
Superior Court Judge Everett
Dickey banded Rauch three
years of probation.
During the trial, Bridgman u-
eailed Rausch, saying be hadn't
owned up to his culpabWty In
the death of her 90n.

When the group begins the
ratings process, members send
out a 30-page questionnaire to
the candidates aslcing for a litany
of personaJ data, including the
names of attorneys on the other
side of the table on trials and
judges that have heard the can-
didate's cases.
The association's 30-member
judiciary committee then ap-
points three of its members to
hold face-to-face interviews with
the candidates. In these sessions,
the candidate is given the oppor-
tunity to respond to any com-
plaints or unflattering claims
about their professional con-
duct.

ner of Bridgman's husband
Bruce, and the Newport Beach
attorney who is managing

voiced that view.
Bridgman has rejected that
view, saying she would be able
to put her own feelings aside

Bridgman and MacEachern se-
cured 46% and 36%, respec-
tively. They must run against
each other since neither se-
cured more than 50% of the

food from local restaurants and sale and

of the 3,000 guests felt good about being
able to help support the center with each

pumpkin and I wanted to support the
(Environmental Nature Center I," said

Republican opponent on everything
from the war on terrorism to prescrip-
tion benefits for seniors.
ln a series of e-mail releases to voters
and media outlets during her run for
the newly aligned 46th District seat,
Schipske. a Long Beach nurse, attorney
and colJege teacher. has kept up a
steady drum beat of criticism of incum-
bent Republican Rep. Dana Rohra-
bacher.
She has taken the aggressive stance.
-She~ beca11se the. new dWtrict has
been pieced together from four existing
ones and includes new cides with resi-
dents she says aren't aware of Rohra-
bacher's track record.

Palos Verdes.
SchipsJce first criticized Rohrabacher's
voting record on oU drilling along-the
coastline; then it was prescription drugs
for seniors. She has taken aim at his
trips to AfghanL~tan and his acceptance
of campaign contributions from "pro-
Arab groups."
In August, Schipske called Rohrabacher
a "rogue co~· and acrused him
of Hoonducting secret and U1ega1 negotia·
tJOns with the Tu.liban." Rohrabac.her ac-
knowledged the meeong, in April 2001.
but said he attended it to chastise the

Community College District's board of

On many issues. Schipske is cut from
a traditional Democratic cloth. She
supports medical care for all, regard-
less of immigration status, lncreased
federal spending on healthcare and
opposition to laws restricting repro-
ductive rights or benefits based on race
or sexual orientation.
Oddly enough, she was at one point
a Republican. Schipske was born in
Long Beach. but grew up in Buena Parle
in a Republican family. She even joined
Nixon's 1972 re-election campaign.
However, when she began work as a
nurse in the neo-natal unit of the UC
Irvine Medical Center in 1980. she be·
gan to change her political views. She
abandoned a Republican Pany that
she said had become too oriented
toward restricting women's rights.

campus. Administrators warn students to watch out for scams.
While there are many legitimate
businesses that follow muJtilevel
marketing plans, the overall
practice raises many ethical
questions among professional
business men and woman.
Multilevel marlceting organizations
often use their tiered structure to
sell products and services that

CORONA DEL MAR -While the
Corona del Mar High football team's
rugged preleague schedule produced
three losses. more than a handful of in-
juries, and, perhaps, chiseled away at
the supreme confidence that followed a
2-0 start, it cenainly did littJe to dimin-
ish the Sea Kings' reputation.
Despite consecutive losses to New-
port Harbor, Cypress and La Habra, the
Sea Kings will enter Thursdays Pacific
Coast League opener against visiting
University with the No. 5 ranking in O F
Southern Section
Division IX. This is
two spots better
than Northwood
(4-1) and 6ve
spots ahead of La-
guna Beach (4-1),
University (2-3),
which some be-
lieve is still a viable PCL title contender,
is unranked. but tops a list of three
teams outside of the top 10 that are still
receiving votes.
CdM began the losing streak ranked
No. 6 and actually moved up after a 17-0
loss to Back Bay rival Newport Harbor,
ranked No. 3 in CIF Division VI.
A surprising Week 4 loss to Cypress,
which has yet to crack the top 10 in Di·
vision VI failed to affect CdM's ranking.
And, due to logistical problems associ -
ated with the section office moving
from Cerritos to a new Los Alamitos lo -
cale, polling will not be conducted this
week after Friday's 41-14 setback to La
Habra, ranked No. 3 in Division IX.
Perception aside, Freeman believes
bis team is better than it was five weeks
ago, though much of that improvement
has been compartmentalized.
"Tham wise, we have a long way to go
and offensively, we haven't shown up
the way we would have lilted to," Pree·
man explained. "But defensively, we've
done some good things and, individu-
ally, our kids have made progress.

of their six Thursday night regular-sea-
son games, the Newport Harbor High
football team used Priday to attend a
film premier of the Sailors' 49-12 victory
over Paramount.
And one scene, in particular, had al-
ready created quite a bmz among the
players as they assembled to review the
videotape.

ceiver and jarred the ball loose for a

ished off the scoop and score with a 34-
yard return that built the Sailors' lead to

It was the kind of hit that, Brlnldey
believes, can have repeitussions for
more than just the victim.
