paper. I don't know if the box i!>
.Jarge or small, shaped like a cube. or
long and narrow as a carton of flowers.
In fact, I don't really know if it's a box at
all. It could be one of those brightly
colored bags with two looped handle..'i
on it. the kind so popular among people
who never learned to gift -wrap.
But knowing my sister, its probably a
box. I don't know where it rest~ in my
!Uster's home -In one of her closets, or
· her bedroom, or on top of a shelf in her
kitchen. But wherever it is, I know it's no
longer as bright and pretty as the day It
wu wrapped. I Imagine it has sat

That was the plan. But lllristmas got
away from me last year. The day began
at my mom's house and ended, for me.
at my ~i~ter ljnda'i... It wa~ a huge deal i1t

'mall rooms. eating and drinking and
exchanging ~ift!t. We sa11g ka raoke and
dnnc('d and told loud, obnoxious jokes.
and before long it was late and I wa5
over .. ;tioiulated anti ~anted to go.
"It's laf~. a nd I've go1 an hour'<; drive
ahead of me:" I ~aid. So I made my
goodhyes and left. and an hour later was
home.
Back at Diana's house, the gift that
was meant to he opened hy me that day
s;u and wailed. /\nd it's sat there and
waited ever i..lnce.
It's been a busy time for me. At tht•
beginning of the year. I moved an hour
fanher away fmm my family. My life ha'
grown increasingly complicatec.J; my joh
more demanding of my time. My
weekdays filled, I put the personal
maintenance stuff off until the
weekends, and the weekends -the
weekends just Oy hy.
Retween the time I last saw my sister
a11d my nieces and today, a day before I
will see Lhem agalp. more than a year
has passed. Somewhere in Diana's
home, my Chrlsunas gift sits and waiti...
Family is hnponant to me. I tell
people. I've said as mucb in this column
