Jllwbhy .... d.lde V. IClng L ately, I've prayed for more people I've never met than I recall ever doing before. Lut Sunday was the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Cllurch. I attended different churches and aervica and was humbled by what I heard and for whom I prayed, with others and by myself. We offered prayers for and with CINDY TRANE those around the CHRISTESON world who suffer serious persecution for their faith in God The International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Oturch began seven years ago with 7,000 comrnJn(d churches, and is now the largest day of prayer of Its lcind. I heard the needs and situations of people who met secretly In Saudi Arabia. others who hid In house churches in Vietnam. as well as those who gathered openly in New Zealand and the desen tents of Sudan to pray for those who suffer persecution. I read of prayers offered lut year on the International Day of Prayer for a man named Ayub In Pakistan who was on death raw because of his faith in Jesus. Since then, Ayub has been released from death row, something seemingly impossible. This ls something that only God could orchestrate. I read that story and cried. I cried out of excitement for the good news, and I cried that the same God of love and power loves and cares about every littJe detail of my life. I've felt like I've let God down lately, and yet when I spend time quietly trying to li$ten to him. I bear him call me one of his beloved children. I cried because I am so prQne to limit my personal prayers to my personal issues, my personal needs and my personal country. But lately I have been challenged to think and pray much bigger prayers, prayers for other people I've never met and other nations I may never visit. I've been and will continue to be excited to see or read about the answers. I know that prayer changes things, and I know that prayer changes me. I also know that God wants me to pray much larger and I know that God Is anxious to make more changes in me. I've taken for granted the privilege and freedom we have in this country to pray together openly whenever we want. We can say grace with heads bowed in a restaurant or hold hands in prayer while ptbered in a church. I will continue to pray about the big and little det.ails of my life, but I'm adding prayers for those who also love God. but doa't have the freedom of expression that we have tn the United States. It's exciting to watch God at work. and I'm praying and trying to do a better job joining him. And you can quote me on that. • CllllNTRANE ~I• a Newport 8Ndt rwldent who speaka frequently to peNntlng groupe. She may be reached via HNll at clndytlonth"flrow.com or through the mail at P.O. In Gaza. if you come here, I will take you to on the caf~ creative spelling tour. Here's a sample: Cofe, Kofe, Kafe, Kafee, Kaff ee, Cofee. I'm absolutely positive you11 find every conceivable variation of the spelling of"caf~" except the right one. In America. brand-name clothes are barely within many people's budgetary li..rnits. For the vast majority of the young men In Gaza. who would give anything to escape the hopelessness and poverty of their lives here, American name brands are extremely popular. They are also available at a fraction of the cost. The only catch being that the name might not be spelled correctly. The local versions of Nike, for instance are "Nlek." "Naik" and "Kine." But to give a sense of authenticity, they still have the famous Ni.Ice symbol underneath. And there are F.uropean companies represented. In one Meroedes Benz I rode in was a new seat cover with a large Meroedes Benz symbol and the words underneath. "Made in Gurmany." The Baptist Church I attend in Gaza is probably one of the few in the world with a huge picture of Ole Guevara spray-painted on its outside fence. The differences between here and America are enormous. I lived In c.osta Mesa. five minutes from the opulent Newport Beach. which boasts of having more Mercedes Benz' per capita of any city In America. Now I live In Gaza. five mJnutes from Jabalya, which boasts of having more donkeys per capita of any place In the Middle Fast. "Where there's a post. there's a donkey to tie to it," one young Jabalyan told me. The modes of transportation may change. The streets that those modes of transportation are used on may change. The laws that govern commuters and the homes that surround these sueets may change. So do the music. ttie language. the food, the clothes the customs and many of the values. But one thing that's the same In both places, besides the internet. is that people need to cope. And one of the best ways they've found to do it Is with hwnoL • HUSEIN MASHNI is a former reporter for the Daily Pilot who covered education.
