Second annual 'Proud to be an American
Day' at Newport Elementary School proves
to be more personal than last year.

students and crowd
gathered Monday for Newport
Elementary's School's "Proud to
be an American Day,"
third-grader Ben Tolan started
waving bis miniature Dag to the
beat, swept up in the patriotic
passion of the moment.
Other studerus followed his
cue, paying homage with their
own star-spangled banners -
s4me wildly like an orchestra
conductor waving a baton,
others more solemnly, as if the
Statue of Uberty were waving
her torch.
On a sun-drenched morning.
the second annual celebration
took place against a
picture-perfect backdrop of
ocean waves breaking on shore,
providing natural crescendos for
the musical numbers. The Lynx.
a replica 1812 privateer, also
made a guest appearance, firing
off its cannons every so often to
punctuate the patriotic
celebration.
The event paid tribute to the
many freedoms Americans
enjoy. The celebration started
last year in response to the Sep t.
11 terrorist attacks. This year it
focused on diversity.
1\venty-four persons from
around the community,
including i.mm.tgrants from
Japan and India and a Muslim
student, kicked off the festivities.
They filed in front of the
crowd , holding patriotic pictures
of the Liberty BeU and Mt.
Rushmore. Corey Thompson, a
sixth-grader al the school who is
also a member of the Apache
Indian Tribe, dressed as a
colorfuJ war dancer and held a
picture of a peace officer and a
firefighter.
"I felt special because !today!
is a big thing." Corey said.
Mayor Tod Ridgeway. whose

American character. poi.Jiting to
Abraham Lincoln ac; a historical
figure he idolizes.
"He prolecled diversity, which
is al the heart of democracy,"
Ridgeway said. UHe taught
tolerance and forgiveness."

to preserve America's many
freedoms.
"I'm lul'ky to have had the

Mahurin said. "There are many
people who would envy us and

Santa Ana winds swept cleanup
crews in both cities from one lo-
cation to another Monday as
workers spent almost all day re-
moving fallen tree branches and
fixing downed power lines.
No traffic accidents were re-
ported In either city as a result of

the wind. but Newport Beach po-
lice said a tree fell on a car and
damaged it in the 500 block of
Femleaf Avenue in Corona del
Mar.
Newport Beach Police Sgt.
Steve Shulman said officers re-
sponded all day to car and resi -
dential alarms going off.
"Signs from businesses were
also falling on cars in different ar·
eas, • he said.
One such incident occurred in
the 6300 block of West Coast
Highway, Shulman said.
"We've just had a very, very
busy day," he said.
Costa Mesa Public Services of-
fice staff echoed the same senti-
ment.

A 1omado sparked a
connection between
Brenda Valle and her

Elementary School on Wednesday
night.
Kelly Woods; an Orange Coast
College student preparing to
become a teacher, created the
tornado. It didn't take much -just
two large soda bottles connected at
their necks with duct tape. When the
bottles are twirled and then held
vertically, a liquid funnel cloud
fo rms near where the bottles are
connected.
When Woods, 19, displayed her
experiment at Wilson's science fair. it
created a frenetic flurry of
excitement, drawing in everyone in
its path.

When Brenda shook the bottles
and watched the tornado fonn, her
eyes lighted up in awe. Then she
passed the tomado-in-a-botde to
her father, Enrique, who was also
enthralled by the experiment.
"It's fun,~ Enrique said. "It looks
like a tornado at the beach."
The science fair allows paren ts
and students to share in the joy of
discovery and gives the college
students a chance to witness the
reaction to their experiments.
"I see the excitement on their
faces, and it's so rewarding," said

to learn, and giving back to my

Members of the
American Legion could see
a yearlong wish come true
tonight. The legion bas
been in negotiations to
change its lease on the
10-acre property from an

City Manager Homer

get a raise tonight, but the
amount depends entirely
on how much City Council
members decide during
their closed session before

meeting. These three are
the only employees who
work directly for the City
Council All others answer
to supervisors.

performance of these three
staff members and decide
whether to grant them
raises. They also take into
account factors such as the
Consumer Price index to
determine raises.
ln March, City Manager
Homer Bludau's salary was
raised to $170,000 a year,
plus a $3.600 car allowance.
He had originally been
hired at a reduced rate
because his work
experience was less than
the city was seeking at the
time. He struclc. a deal with
the city to hire him for

SPACE
Council members will
also consider tonight
whether to lease space on
Main Street to house a
portion of the Balboa
Theater. F.arlier this year,
theater supporters had
hoped the city would buy
the building at 111 Main St.
to house the renovated
theater's restrooms and
rehearsal space. The sale
fell through before it got off
the ground, but now there's
a good chance they will be
able to lease the space.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The lease deal doesn't
seem to be too
controversial, but it's just
one small step toward
making the theater a reality.
The cause has foundered
for years for a number of
reasons, including a lack of
adequate space. But it's
certain that supporters
maintain their fervor for
creating a vibrant
performing arts venue on
the peninsula

A step in the right direction
Susan Wilbur, UCI's director
of admissions, will take on a
similar job as director of
undergraduate admissions
for the UC system.
Wilbur became director of admissions at
UCI in 1993. During her tenure, the total
number of freshmen and community
college transfer appllcationa increased from
19,758 to 37,288.

candidate, not just academic achievement,

who meet the minimum eligibility

to make the leap from director of
admissions at UC Irvine to director of

University of California system.

admissions, which is of great interest to all
California, and will be sensitive to all the
issues.~
In her new position, Wilbur will work
with faculty members in their discussion of
policies, programs and ways for improving
admissions.

After working for the past 23 years at
UCI, wpbur will now focus on developing
and enhancing admissions policy for all 1 O
UC campuses.
As head of UCJ's office of ad.missions,
Wtlbur presided over some major changes
in the admissions process.
While Wilbur is excited about the
chci.llenges of her new job. she said she will
miss the chance to work on a personal level
with prospective students.

always happy when you're able to be
selected for a position where you can do
what you !enjoy)," Wilbur said.
The first was the pilot program of the UC
system's electronic application in 1995,
which more than half of prospective UCI
students are expected to use this year. Also
in 1995, the UC Regents voted to eliminate
affirmative action and not consider race,
"When you interact with students and
are able to malc.e a match between their
interests and what you can offer at the
university, it's a very rewarding profession."

environmental award
The O~ge County chapter of
the American Red Cross honored
local environmentalist Stephanie
Barger at a Monday ceremony in
l.rvine.
Barger, who founded Costa
Mesa-based Earth Resource
Foundation, won one of eight
Qara Barton Spectrum Awards
for Outstanding Women in
Orange County.
The 40-year-old Newport
Beach resident won in the cat·
egory of "preservation.~ which
honors someone who has stood
out in "promoting awareness or
action toward environmental,
cultural or historical preserva-
tion" in the county.
Barger was nominated for the
award by Volunteer Center of
Orange County, Ricoh Electron-
ics lnc. and Trails $ All.
Barger was credited with
bringing "hundreds of under-
privileged children to the beach•
and helping create a native plant
garden at a Santa Ana elemen-
tary school.

Back Bay area closed
after sewage spill
The Orange County Health
Care Agency closed off a sec-
tion of Upper Newport Bay
on Monday after raw sewage
backed up at an apartment
complex. It may have spilled
into a storm drain, an agency
spokeswoman said.
The agency ordered the
closure at 1:40 p.m. Monday,
spokeswoman Mon1ca Ma-
zur said. The agency closed
l ,000 feet of beach at the
outcropping of land at West-
cllff Park.
The spill ensued when
sewage began to overflow at
a 12-unit apartment complex
in the I 000 bloclc of Rutland
Road further upstream, Ma-
zur sald. The apartments,
known as Rutland Anos, are
near Mariners Parle..
A Newport Beach sewage
cleanup crew responded to
the spill Monday.
The cause of the spiU was
not immediately known, Ma-
zur said.
The apartment's manager,
when contac1ed Monday,
sald the spill was probably
caused by roots that had en-
tered the line.
"It's being fixed right now,·
said the manager, who iden-
tified himself only as Tom.
The beach will remain
closed until water sampling
from the area shows that
bacteria levels no longer pre-

BMW set on fire in
Newport on Sunday
A black BMW WU dam-
aged early Sunday morning
after someone reportedly
wedged a gas-6JJed plastic
bottle into the car's partially
open sunroof and lighted It,
according to a Newport
Beach police report.
A resident in the 500
block of Redlands in New-
port Beach who works for
an auto shop in Costa Mesa
said he had parked the
BMW, a custom er's car, on
the street because there was
not enouih room in the
s hop, the report said.
The man said he came out
of his house when he heard a
small explosion at about 3:30
a.m. and saw the car on fire.
He said he put it out with an
extinguisher. When police
arrived on scene, there was
still smoke coming from in-
side the car, the report said.

could touch on important
issues, like the new people
elected on the school board
or the mistale it was that
Gay Sandoval wasn't elected
judge. But who am I
kidding? I can't pull that off.

depths of my mind and try

that I was to follow in the
footsteps of my friends and
fellow newsies with wnting
for the Forum, I was so
excited. Finallyl A place for
me to express my feelings
and teU all my best jokes.
Ever since I was a little
girl, I have always wanted
to be in the newspaper. I
imagined running to the
front porch (there are
always porches in these
fantasies) and grabbing the
paper, bringing it to the
table and looking at the
front page. There in bold
type, the paper still warm
from the morning sun, I'd
see the headline: "Local
gymnast Ttemey Smith
wins gold medal·
What a great dream!
Now. this was about the
time I was really into
gymnastics but hadn't
figured out yet that three
mon ths of training won't
get you to the Olympics,
especially if you haven't
even mastered the
cartwheel.
My dream of ma.Icing the
front page never d ied, ii
just transformed. The
headline would just change
with whatever activtty I was
determined to perfect that
M?ek. Then my dream8
retreated a little further into
because soon enough I
again felt the overwhelming
urge to be in the
newspaper.
This obsession only got
worse when my sister
started popping up on the
front pages of sports
sections all around the
world (by world, I mean
Newport -Mesa).
My sister, Autumn Smith,
was one of the great high
school girl's basketball
players circa 1997-2000. Her
face would appear
everywhere. There would be
huge pictures of her
grabbing a rebound or
towering over a lesser
player. a look of intense
~portsmanship on her face
with that one perfect bead
of sweat rolling down her
cheek. Oh man. it was great.
Her accomplishments as an
athlete only made me want
my dream so much more. I
had to be in the newspaper.
Now if only I could think of
a way. without being
arrested, to get there!
Now many of you are
probably saytn8' "You can
do it. Ttemcy, • or "Be a
b-ball star, kid." between
your bites of breakfast. But.
alas, I cannot. I have the
hand-eye coordination of a
fish. and the genes that
gave my sister the ability to
defend the ball or male a
free throw somehow never
got to me.
Not to be one to complain
(try telling that to my
parents}, I decided that if I can' play basketball, why not
write about it? So freshman
year, I joined Mesa's
journalism staff to write
about spons, but I quiddy
learned that writing about
basketball wasn't half as fun
as playing it. and I mCNed on
to topics more my sryie. I
have been there eYer since.
Though I still have no
idea how to do a cartwheel.
and r will never be on the
front page for brealdng the
school's rebound record, I
am still in the newspaper.
And that is excldngf
Now if I could only
change that small mug shot

unsympathetic to charges of it being
unfair. In reality, the death tax affects
millions of Americans with average
incomes. It has been the cause of families

wrong when government is the cause of a

the facts as they were presented at the·

staff report. Your article. which repeatedly
refers to a "lone" owl and the "one" owl,
neglects to me ntion the numerous other
sensitive resources present on the site and
critical in tbe City Council's decision

As stated in an Oct. 28 letter from the
California Department of F'ish and Game:
"In addition to the burrowing owt, the site
supports or bas the potential to support
other sensitive biological resources."
These include rare native grasslands and
vernal pools. This information was clearly

have been the same to a lighted sign or
water tank. Just because the matter has
been settled does not, in any way, imply
that the residents of the neighborhood are
happy. Most of us still feel that the steeple
is too tall and. with its lighting, is .
inappropriate for our nelghborhood. It
wouid be better suited to someplace like
the Irvine Spectrum, wbere"there are taJI
lighted s tructures and because it is a
regionaJ facility and not intended to serve
only the local community.
Oark mentioned her concerns for the
design of a house of worship. I have been
unable to find any publication in a
peer-reviewed journal that dearly
demonstrates that the emcacy o( prayer is
d irectly proportional to the height of the
building of worship.

was exciting."
OUcbester's first month at UO has
been exciting for him and the Ant-
eaters, to say the least. And, it
has also been busy. Actually. his
first week was rather busy.
Otlchester, who took over a
NCM Division I athletic pro-
gram that could be best de-
scribed as up-and-coming,
spent his first week introducing himself
to the people on campus and in the
community, and in the process he be-
gan wortc on the school's budget.
"That week was pretty much a whirl-
wind," Otlchester said. "I got the sense
people were going about 80 miles per
hour and I was going about 40 miles
per hour. I wanted to meet as many
people as I could, who had a connec-
tion with our program."
Last week. while OUchester was in
Oklahoma with the UO men's basket-
ball team, he explained why he wanted
to meet so many people. Budget cuts in
the athletic department, and perhaps
among academics, as welJ, could be
coming soon. A decision could come as
soon as December or January.
"My Idea all ak>ng has been, ln order
to meet the expectations that were put
before me when I was hired, I'm going
to have to reach out to the community
and search for support." OUchester
said. "In order to compete. we have to
have the resources to do that We'll see
what happens in January, but in the
meantime I'm going to press forward
and gather support from the comrnu-
nJty."
OUchester also revealed goals and
priorities when he took time out of b.ls
busy schedule while in Okla-
homa. He said renovation at
Crawford Hall and the comple-
tion of Anteater Ballpark are
among the top of the list.
Renovation of Crawford Hall Is
actually an understatement.
Otlchester described the job he wants
done as an upgrade, yet a better de-
scription would probably be. overhaul.
OUchester said the facility is outdated
and there definitely needs to be change
in the near future.

campus and the community.

I think what a completed baseball sta-
dium can do for the campus and the
community. It will give our baseball
program a great opportunity to con-

ever had at UCI. If we continue to im-
prove over the next six to l 0 games, it
will be a very interesting conference

of the bigger schools don't want to
schedule us. I've called other schools
and some of the btgger schools don't
want to schedule us because of Pat's
reputation.·
When Otlchester cam e to UO, he
came with a reputadon. as well, that of
being mellow, down to earth and very
personable. That was one of the many
reasons he was hired, said Jordan Har-
ris. a forward on the men's bas.k.etbail
team who was on the AD search com-
mittee.
·1 just thought he was a pretty cool
guy," sald Harris, who was the first stu-
dent-athlete that OUcbester met. "He
was really personable. He came aaoss
as being real intelligent I just liked him.
He didn't rub me the wrong way. You
could just tell he was a good person. I
thought It was a good choice that he
became our AD. He was the one person
I liked the most. I was happy to see him
get the job.•

For as long as his three fresh-
men and two sophomores can
defend and sink perimeter jump-
ers. as he believes they can, the
Mustangs may successfully nego-
tiate the Golden West League traf-
fic to earn the schools unprec-
edented fourth straight trip to the
CTF Southem Section Playoffs.

Danny's little brother and an-

Danny Krikorian is the lone re-
turning &'tarter from last year's 18-
10 squad, which tied the school
single-season record for victories
en route to a third-place finish in
the Pacific Coast League. He av-
eraged 8.7 points and earned sec-
ond-team all-league laurels as a
complimentary player to PCL
Co-MVP David Conte (redshirt-
ing at Cal State Los Angeles) and
first -team all-leaguer Olad Vakili
(playing at Orange Coast Col-
lege). Serven said much more is
expected from this year's team
captain.
"This will be his third year as a
starter and bis role has changed
every year," Serven said. MThis
