June Casa1rande Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -The three city employees who work directly for the City Council all received 5% pay raises on Tuesday based on annual perform- ance evaluations. City Atty. Bob Burnham got an $8,250 raise, bringing his saJary to $173,250. This is on top of a $9,000-a-year raise he received in April, which was based on a survey the city conducted of other city attorneys' salaries in the region. City Manager Homer Bludau got an $8,500 pay increase. He will now make $178,500. He will still receive a $3,600-a - year car allowance. City Oerk Lavonne Harkless' $88.000- a-ye~ salary was raised to $92.:i-oo. She has not received a raise since August 2001. •1 work very closely with all three of them, and I can tell you they're all very good, very capable people," said Coun- cilman Steve Bromberg, who served as a member of the council subcomminee to evaluate the performance and saJary of the three workers. Bludau was hired by the city in I~ at a reduced pay rate because he had less experience than city recruiters were hoping for. In March, council members agreed that Bludau had proven himself and upped his pay from the deflated $145,000 to $170,000. That figure, which was arrived at in part by surveying other city managers' salaries in the region, rdnlced Rludau's saJary as No. 12 among the 20 Orange County city managers surveyed. • "I love working for the city of New- pon Beach, and this council has always treated me very well," Bludau said. M embers of the Costa Mesa Olamber of Commerce's CM900 Oub donated food to I 50 local families Tuesday morning as part of its fourth annual Thanksgiving Food Dnve. The donations included turkeys and boxes of food that could provide complete Thanksgiving meals for families of eight. At 9:30 a.m., members brought the donated items to the Shalimar Leaming Center in cars and trucks. By 10 a.rn., the food -aside from twtey, it included cranberry sauce, salsa and tamaies -was organized for distribution to families that both the learning center and Save Our Youth staff members identified as recipients. Rides were given to those who couldn't walJc all of their food home. The food was made possible by CM900 Oub member donations and contributions and discounts from businesses. including South Coast Plaza. Stater Bros. Markets, Smart & Final, Harbor Center, C.J. "'"' Tina Hoover P eople are not perfect and every society is Oawed, but instead of finding criticism, Tina Hoover looks for ways to make her world bener. "Maybe that's why I do what I do, because when you get involved. you help make it the best it can be,· she said, realizing for the first time why she has been volunteering her whole life. A Corona del Mar resident, Hoover works Lo make her church, her home and her community the best -just because they are hers. Holding prestigious titles such as president and lieutenant governor of the ICiwanis Oub, and being a board member of the Oiambet of Commerce, Hoover works several full-time jobs at any one time. She doesn't get paid for them, though. Instead, she generates thousands of doUars for charities through fund-raising projects. "I don't like just doing things, l like doing things in a big way," Hoover says. Adding class to everything she puts her hand on, she mOVt!d the Otild Giving because it:.S what she does Guidance Center's holiday tree fund-raiser into an elegant hotel, gave the Habitat for Humanity's fund-raising yard sale a clean department-store look and raised the Paclfic Coast Triathlon to national attention and Olympic consideration. Hoover's touch is unmistalable, but she attributes success to the people she works with. "I am just one more smaU part, but all of those small parts coming together ma.Ice a huge difference." she says. An organizer more than a participant, she finds joy in bringing athletes together through triathlons but confesses that until recently she didn't even know how to swim. Leaving little time for personal goaJs, Hoover finally had to cut down on volunteering to achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer. Thie; year, at the age of61. Hoover was sworn in as an attorney after passing the bar exam on her 20th try. Now, Hoover has her own practice, new demands on her time an.cl even more skills to offer. Already, she has ta.lcen on three pro bono cases and has committed herself to working with youth, teaching analytical thinking through mock trials. Reluctantly, Hoover has had to take more time for herself 10 organize family gatherings, focus on her private practice and wort toward her new goal of becoming a judge. But Hoover will continue volunteering, planning and organizing. because that's wbo she is, that's what she has always done and that's what keeps her going. Unfortunately fo r Orange Coast (2 1-2-2 and the No. 3 seed), Cypress won two of three meetings, and tied another, including Tuesday's 3-1 decision in overtime of the Southern California Regional Fi- nals at Cypress College. The Oiargers (23-0-1) ad- vance to the state Final Four for an eighth co n- secutive year. Coast took a 1-0 lead on a Nikki Saenz goal in the 67th minute but the second-seeded Chargers equalized just three minutes later to force a 30- minute ovenime session. Sadye Reish took a rebound and kicked the ball toward the goaJ in overtime. The ball hit the inside of the left goal post and caromed 90 degrees to catch the right side of the net for the game-winner. "I didn't have great concern," said 12-year Cy- press Coach Ray I laas when asked if he felt ner- vous when Orange Coast took. a 1-0 lead. "We've been able to come back in a number of games." The loss ends Coast's season, the second year in a row the Pirates have lost to the Cllargers in the regional finals. "We wanted to beat them because they are our perennial nemesis," said OCC Coach Barbara Bond. "( admire the girls because they go after them. I felt like it would go our way, we were ready. Both teams had opportunities today and there was good play out there. I'm proud of the girls and I'm proud of Cypress. One team has to go to (state playoffs) and of course I'm disappointed it's not us. Cypress will represent our conference well." Cypre~ won the Orange Empire Conference and has outscored Its opponents. 127-3. Orange Coast has been the only team to score on Cypress this season in two losses and one tie to the Chargers. "We're a lot better than last year when we were scared: said Coast sophomore forward Jaycee Mahler. "They are a really good passing team.• Solid Charger passing led to 22 shots on goal for the Chargers compared to 10 for the Pirates. Coast goalkeeper Margaret Landeros made seven saves and the defense of Summer Olaldu, who played with a disJocated shoulder, along with Rosie Dobbs and Alicia Santiago, kept the Chargers off the scoreboard for as long as they could. "Cypress had the upper hand in the first 20 mln- utes of the game and (Landeros) and (Chaldu) came through for them no t to score on us,~ Bond said. ·At that point I thought it was anybody's game."
