THE VERDICT
Fighting political correctness like a person
T he other day I made a reference to a
woman as chairman of something or
othl'r. It was only a J)aS.'iing reference
Oil Lhe way lo H point or ~real interest and
illumination, but I was derailed weU before
making that poinl. It seems I had
committed a faux pas in using the word
chairman for a woman.
I bow to no one in my support of equal
rl~hts for women. I was ralsed by women. I
laved with women (a wife and two
daughters). I feel that some of my most
cffectiv<' judicial prose was dedicated to
the protection o f women in what is often
an unfair society. This whole thing about
language. however, I just don't get.
For centurie~. the word man was used as
an all-encompassing term meaning not

people. Then at some
point in the 20th
century. "man" hecanw
a dirty word, and we've
been struggling with
replacemen1s ever since.
One suggestion is to
substitute the word
person. So, Instead of
speaking of the history
of mankind, we
presumably should be
speaking of 1he history
of personk.lnd. Thus, the foreman of a wort
crew is transformed into the foreperson, a
cowman Into a cowperson. Then there's
that big. heavy, iron lid In the street. Once a
manhole cover, to be consistent ii .,1111uld
now be a personhole cover.
Think of all the other changes we have
yet to make -the Individual cha~ed with
the crime of personslaughter. the polic<'
going house 10 house on a personhunt.

And What about the word woman? If aoy
word should be changed. it would be this
one. From now on we will be discussing
woperson's rights. There are some areas.
however. where I insist we draw the line. I
refuse to Imagine Captain Bligh or 1 loratio
Hornblower roaring, "Person the oars!" It
just doesn't Oy.

Here are some items to be
considered by the Newport
Reach City Council tonight.
PERMITS, BUSINESS
LICENSES
Tonight's study session. which
will take place before the regular
meeting. will cover.some
important topics.
First. the council will hear a
presentation by staff members
on procedures for obtaining a
business license in the city,
including current fee structures.
Then. in what likely wiU be a
longer discussion, the council
will look at the fees the city
charges for special event
permits. SpecificaUy, it will look
at whether it wants to increase
fees for special event permits.
WHAT TO EXPECT
It's possible that tonight's
presentation on business
licenses will just be noted and
filed. The special evenr permit
process ls more likely to go
further. perhnps appearing on a
future council agenda for a
formal vote on changing the
fees.
COUNCIL AGENDAS
In their regular meeting,
council members wUI consider
changing the order in which
they deal with ci ty business.
Earlier this yt>ar, cound l
members voted to move back
the time when they hear
comments on items pulled from
the consent calendar. However.
they moved the item until after
public comments even though
many seemed to think they were
voting to move it all the way to
tht: t'nd of the meeting. Tonight,
they will vote on moving the
puJled consent calendar items
until the very end of the
meeting.
WHAT TO EXPECT

thought they were approving last
time, h's likely that council
members will support the move
tonight.

"disagree." I looked over al 1he
large group of students and
teachers !>landing by the "agree"
sign. What was wrong wi1h
them? They must not have w ry
good taste. Coke had much
more sparkle, more of a tanl':.
Wow. Some of my favorite
students -ones whom .1 had
assumed to have good ta1'te -
were on lhe other side of the
room.

All-Big West pick
UC Irvine senior women's basketball standout Kristen
Green. a second-team All-Big West Conference selection,
was the lone all-conference honoree representing the
Anteater men's and women'!; teams.
Green, a 5-foot-8 guard who averaged 13.5 points, 5.5
rebounds. five assists and 1.6 steals, also netted a team-
high 55 three-pointers. Her 2.2 three balls per game
ranked second among Big Wfit women.
O iristina c.allaway. a 6-0 senior forward who averaged
12.4 points and eight rebounds (second best in the co11 -
ference), earned honorable m ention from the women's
coaches.
Senior Adam P'drada and sophomore Jeff Gloger also
received honorable mention from the men's coaches.
The 7·0 Parada averaged a team-leading 12.3 points
and 6.6 rebounds, while shooting 58.1 % from the field.
Gloger, a 6·4 point guard. averaged 9.1 points, 6.3 re·
bounds, 4.2 assists and 2.1 steals. His 135 career steals al-
ready rank second on he school's all-time list
Both the UCI men (11 -17, 6-12 in conference) and the
women (6-20, 5-13) failed to advance to the eight-team
conference tournament
University of the Pacific senior guard Miah Davis was
the men· Player of the Year, while Idaho sophomore cen·
ter Emily Faurholt was women's Player of the Year.
Bob Thomason (UOP) was men's Coach of the Year.
while Idaho's Mike Divilbiss earned the same honor
among women's coaches.
