past. bas been perfecting a Back Bay
Bordeaux, fermented from grapes
grown ln soU bordering Upper Newport
Bay.
As the owner of Newport-Mesa's sole
winery, the shnp.IJ.DaJDed Newport
Beach Vlneyarda and Winery, Moriarty
says the eomewhat arid climate is Ideal
for growing grapes. He describes ft as a
cross between Baja Mexico and the
Mediterranean.
"It's a great climate." Moriarty said,
overlooking hJs 3.5-acre Newport
Beach property. ·Growing grapes is
nothing. I have more problems with
the (city's) planning departmenL •
With the air or 8 developer hardened
by the bureaucratic roadblocks at City
Hall, Moriarty can quickly recount bis
struggle over the past year or so to
construct a wine cave at his Mesa Drive
property.
His dream hasn't died, but there's an
air or resignation about the cave
venture. One tbJng he's optimistic
about is his winemaking craft,
developing high-quality wines and
adding a tasting room at his exotic

Woman arrested for
allegedly leaving baby in car
Costa Mesa Police arrested a
34-year-old Huntington Beach woman
Tuesday on suspicion of child
endangerment after officers found her
4-month-old daughter locked in a car
alone for about 30 minutes.
Mary Gisella Selby had allegedly
puked her car in the 2300 block of
Harbor Boulevard and gone grocery
ahopping when police officers got a
call from the ftre department alerting

between 1971 and 1992, then
you have benefited from the
touch of Harry S. Green. Green

Green, a native of Southern
c8Jiromia, managed l..Os Angeles'
Grillith Park befo~coming to
Costa Mesa in the 1970s. On
~ 15, 1971. be signed a
contract with the city to manage
the golf course and the country
club.
It was then that he met Bob
Wilson, a historian and former
Costa Mesa mayor. lbe Greens
-Hany and wife MayBelle -
and the Wllsons -Bob and
Maryalice -became close
friends, often traveling together.
Wilson remembers Green as a .fun,. man.. '''"'' ._, ....
l }f...\\ "He was uie kind of guy
always buying a drink for
people," Wilson said "He was
always listening to people's
stories."
Green had an 18 handicap,
which would let him get into a
tournament, but was_.n't
Special.Wat, b.i$ friend said.
Among Green's contributions
to the city were the Donnybrook
and Goblin tournaments that
were h~ every year. On the
Sunday before St Patrick's Day,
the Donnybrook tournament
would bring couples to the
course for a day of golf that
included dinn~r. drinks, prizes
and a party at the clubhouse.
The Goblin tournament was held
the Sunday before Halloween.
The r>eW operators, Mesa
Verde Po.rtners, have not
continued with the two
tournaments, Wilson said
Green, a "stout" smiling man
with ruddy cheeks, was someone
who loved children, Wilson
remembered. Green and bis wife
had four children, three boys and
a girl.
On a trip to Otlna, Wilson
recalls Green being surrounded
by little children.
"They cuddled right up to
him," Wilson said. "He was
aJways a father figure."
Green passed away a few years
ago. His wife, MayBeDe, died last
month.

to roll out a crop of his own

malbec, merlot and petit verdot
-line Moriarty's property.
He flniahed harvesting th1a
year's crop ln late September,
leaving the vines to grow
dormant during the winter
months.
The jOYial Moriarty isn't
taking a highly sd~tific
approach to winemaking,
though he bas poured himself
into the endeavor.
"Once the grapes reach
ripeness, the bf.rds will let you
know," Moriarty joked. "My dog
even eats them."
Moriarty established the
winery with girlfriend Loren
Blackwood in 1999. The two
have been a couple fo r six
years. Blackwood handles a lot
of the marketing effort&. She
de8igned the winery's Web site
(www.nbwine.com) and is
working to place the wine in
Orange County restaurants.
So far, the wine has reached
the ceUar of Anaheim's Napa
Rose and Newport Beach's
·Pascal. Blackwood said she
strikes up many of the leads,
then brings in Moriarty to
close.

stretches back to his bachelor
past, in which be developed a
Rodman-esque reput.ation of

around town.
Moriarty's mothe r, Ruth Ann
Moriarty, is the sister of Henry
Segentrom.
Io the 1980s, he s ponsored
annual theme parties, with
names l1ke "Pimps, Hookers,
Drug Dealers and Lawyers
Ball.• Hundreds of revelers
arrived ln scantlly·clad outfits,
which rarely stayed in place as
the night p rogressed.

Moriarty says be has been

then-Disney-owned dome.
Moriarty was politely asked not
to come back.
Moriarty can also recount
tales from Balboa Bay Oub
parties he threw in the early
1970s and chill cook-offs in
Newport Beach that featured
wet T-shirt contests.
"It was the wildest party in
town." Moriarty said about the
high-intermediate and advanced.
The minimalist hanwt a few

indoor-outdoor lights. Where you
fall within the intennediate range
depends Oil how many small,
white lights you put up, and
where you put them. Nothing too
ostentatious, just a quiet
statement that says "I'll do more
than the minimalist. But there is a
limit."
Point totals begin to rise as your
cook-off.
Moriarty, 54, graduated from use. with a degree in
international management. For
30 years. as a landscape
architect, h~ grew exotic
orchids and other plants. Via
his Newport Beach nursery,
Green Systems International,
Moriarty continues his green
thumb ways.
He still holds dinner parties
for close friends, but Moriarty
now seems content to Uve a
quieter life. Quieter, but not
lacking in a fine locaJ vintage.

have been somewhat obsrured In
the last few years by the spread or
"icide lights" -random·length
strands that hang from the eaves
like, well, Icicles, hence the name.
There must be a trick to hanging
icide lights. On some houses they
are stylish and reaDy do look like
icides. On others, it looks like a
stiff wind blew the lights from the
house next door onto the roo( As

his hike through 14 states

·His journey through the
Aj>palachian Thill began in April
2QO I. Wlth a year of research
and physical training behind rum, Ward, In his mid 60s. was
f$dy to take on the 2, 168 mile
trail alone.
, Deciding to follow in the
footsteps of other light-weight
backpackers before him, Ward
plepared bis 18-pound
btckpaok with tbe four
emendals: a tarp for shelter, a
sJeeplng bag, clothes and
dthydrated food that his wife

on his way.
But six-months into his trek.
Ward stopped I J 8 miles short of
his goal. With the strain of
loneliness and injuries
coostandy swroundlng him.
Ward needed time to re-group
and re-capture bis drive.
·1n sptte of my
apprehensions, I decided I'd
probably have to do it alone,"
said Ward about his inJtial
decbion to hike the trall. "There
were times when I'd go for many
hou:ra and I wouldn't see a soul
... after my experience last yur,
I felt sort of burned out and
although I was disappointed,

to me to finish it."

bridge connecting Costa Mesa to

It is the same bridgie, the same
plan, that bas been a point of
contention for decades. And during
those years of discu.Won, almost
every reasooable voice has ronduded
that the bridge is an atrocious idea.
But. because the proposed bridge sdll
exists on county plans. the nodon
refwles to die.
It is long since time it did. for
numerous reasons. But the two most
compelling for Costa Mesa residents
should be these: It will gJe8.dy
increase tra16c through town and. li1ce
it or not. Costa Mesa is not a
beach-front town.
The traffic Issue Is one familiar to
bwldreds of residents who. over the
years. have spoken out against the
19th Street bridp plan. Images of

Coast Highway and the Costa Mesa

nonprofit that serves anyone who needs help
S hare Our Selves is the
largest agency for direct
aid in Orange County and
serves anyone in need. The
Westside nonprofit. wb.icb bas 40
part-time/full-time employees a,nd
450 volunteers, pays people's bills
and distributes food. clothing and
toys. They also have about 20,000
medical/ dental patients annually.
Right now, as with most
nonprofits, ls an extremely
important time of year because
the number of people in need
rises during the holidays.
On Tuesday, Oty F.ditor James
Meier toured the Superior Avenue
nonprofit with SOS Executive
Director Karen McGllnn. There,
he found boxes of turkeys and
other Thanksgiving fixings that
ended up keeping a lot of
stomachs full on Thursday's
holiday.
Meier also sat down the

Superior Avenue nonprofit is
doing this year, some of the
heartwarmlng stories that occur
there and thole who criticize all
nonprofits on Costa Mesa's
Westside.

big-dollar months. People remember
to think about others during this

And it's not just getting the money.
We believe here, at SOS, that you need
to be able to participate where you
can. so if the best you can gjve is the
free turkey you got because you
bought the one turkey. then OIC.
So I don't want to quantify what we
get during these months as the money.
What I really want to qualify what we
get this month is the opportunity for
people to participate and once they've
done it wherever they can. then the
want to do it all year.
The lady who comes in with her
little cbildten and brings In the used
toys. because we have a used toy
distrlbutioo. all of a sudden she says
•Oh. we can do this aO the time; we'll
clean our cloeet.s. •
So the holiday season is jl.Jlt a door
that people pass through. Hopefully,
when they come to the doot c,bey'll
want to be a part of it all of the time.

the city. We are not dependent on any
funds from the city of Costa Mesa in
any manner. We are also privately
funded. Over 90% of our income
comes from private funding. The only
money other than that comes from
the new tobacco settlement money
coming in from the county that we use
for medical care.
We are what I wouJd call a
stand-alone operation. We're what
everybody dreams you should be -
raise your own funds. be a
responsible business, serve the needs
of the people and be independent of
any governmental ties. So I want to
make sure that that's clear. And we
own our facility and our business is
nonprofiL

pects of winning this season as
four starters and eight letter-
men return for C.oach Jen
Thompson's 2002-03 squad in a
season beginning with lofty ex-
pectations.
wwe're trying to build a pro-
gram. So far, so good," said
Thompson, widely celebrated
on campus for merely returning
for a second year, following sev-
eral years of one-year coaching
wonders.
-We actually have a frosh-
sopb team this year. We haven't
in the past But now there are
more girls in the program. It's
just that the calJber of player ls
a lot better and I think the fact
that the word's getting around
campus. And having a coach re-
turn, that's always nice. That's
something everybody seems to
be pretty impressed with, be-
cause I'm the first coach (to re-
turn) in bow many years? There
WU a lot of transition last year.
We did thin&' (the players)
probably weren't used to, but
they worked batd at everything
we did. We only lost Evita (Cas-
tillo), but the rest of the players
last year were juniors. or below.
Some didn't return, but for the
mott part everyone is back from
