Yacht club faces a deadline that could mean
the end of affordable access to the harbor

his life will be like if the South
Shore Yacht Oub disappears.
Along with wife Connie, he's
been a member for 12 years. His son
was married there. Three or four times
a week. Ed and ConnJe come to the
club to socialize a bit before bitting the
water on thelr boat. •Serena."
•u•s a very special place," Quesada
said. "The words 'yacht club'
sometime$ denote exclusivity, but we
are a very lnclustve kind of club. If this
go~ away, we would never be able to
replace what we have now."
The club's 45-year traditJon of
making the water accessible to
everyone could soon come to an end.
The property where the club has
leased its s pace on the harbor since the
1950s was purchased more than a year
ago by a charter boat operator.
' ln April 2004, their lease will expire.
At that time, the new owner has
warned, the $10,000-a-month rent may
double.
Or, worse for club members, the new
owner could choose to move the
120-foot charter boat Icon from Its spot
on Udo to the yacht club's West Coast
Highway location, squeezing or
nudging out completely the small-time
sailors now taking up the club's 65-foot
frontage. ·
The new owner bas offered to help
move the club to Udo, but for some, It
just wouldn't be the same.

It was nunored that Balboa
Island was the first location of
<lwlie's auu. But fun Je~.
Balboa Island historian,
vehemently says, "No!.
Gron.sky. former owner of Arts
Landing. Edgewater -now the
Newport Landing restaurant -
a,nd Balboa Pavilion, clears up
the tale.
Gronskf laughed as he said:
•Pete Torres was the originator
of Oiarlie's Olili -let me tell
you about this guy! Torres came
to work for me in the mid-'SOs.
launching his cooking career as
a galley cook on one of my
fishing boats, the Frontier,
skipper Spike Taft. His bill of fare
was quite a drawing card for all
aboard.·
Gronsky wasn't 100 sure
whether the fishermen on the
Frontier were there to fish or eatl
Torres loved chill and always
made it from scratch. He
slapped it onto anything edible:
eggs. hot d~. burgers, over
com bread, fries and apple pie
upon request!

Tunes found his first home in
1967 on the water, next to
Davey's locker on Udo
Pe.nlnsula -formerly Demiey's,
now the Bluewater GrUl -and
opened Ouulie's OillL
'Ibrres opened early In the
mornings forthe fishermen.
Word spread fast, with locals
filling Owiie's to standing room
only. 'Ibrres found It necessary to
move from his little chill house
to a larger home.
There was a space right beside
Newport Pier. He stayed there
for a few years. moving across
the boardwalk in 1972.
There. Torres had room to
really expand -not only his
menu, but seating. He even
opened 24 hours a day. Morning,
noon or njght, the place was
paclced.
He was going to try to
franchise by opening another in
Costa Mesa, near 22nd Street
and Old Newport, but It didn't
work out. Torres was the draw
and he couldn't be two places at
once.
ln 1987, Torres sold the
Newport Pier location to the
Farmanfarmai fam~
wwe haven't changed the
menu, but a big change is a new
generation comes in to eat, H
manager Sean Farmanfarmai
says. '"We have lost our
late-night crowd and are more
family oriented.·
Today at 7 am., a group of
men known as the ·coffee
clutch" gather and sit in front of
Olartie's. These "Outchers· tell
everyone that they like the

Hutzler said. "It has to show the
essence of what It's about. It has
to show a sophisdcation. •
At a cat show, the animals a.re
picked up. poked and prodded
after they're lifted from their
metal cages. Judges scribble
notes and ratings for each cat
on score sheets that are used to
determine the top 10 animals in
each category.

cats are handed "rosettes.· or
ribbons, in reverse order. The
winnlng cat pulls In the win-
ning fabric last, a moment usu·
ally greeting with ettited ap·
plause from the crowd.
"To appreciat~ the cat ls like
appreciating a fine painting.·
Hutzler said. "It gives you
pleasure to look at it."
Cats have been shown in
competition for sUgbtJy more
than 100 years, dating back to
1875. Dog shows, on the other
hand, date baclc to ancient
times.

Candles have an instant
effect. A dozen tapers arranged
on a mande are very dramatic.
If you don't have enough
candlesticks, run out to Cost
Plua and stock up on the simple
glass variety that come in
different heights. While you're
there, get a few boxes of
candles. I like using one color
all at once. But you can shake It
up. I give you permission.
lf you have silver or crystal
bowls hibernating in a closet,
bring them out of hiding. I like
fill trays, candy dishes and
revere bowls with old glass
ornaments.. If there are a few
chips or cracks in your tiny
treasures. it's all right. Patina is
ln. No one will have to know
they're not •vtntage• -after
going through a few kids. all my
breakables look a Utde worn. I
just pretend they're old and
ve.ry valuable. It's all attitude.
Mounds of fruits and
vegetables are an easy and
reladvdy Inexpensive way to
add color and texture to your
tabletops.

Mesa resident can invite thousands of
people to join him for a beachside
activity, thanks to the Internet-based
Outdoors Quh
The Outdoors Oub started about five
years ago when foWl.der Tun Bui fonned
ao e-mail list for a bunch of his friends.
The list blossomed, and soon the group
created a Web-based posting site to
continue it. After two years of tripling
members. Bui decided to create a Web
site devoted entirely to outdoor
activities, he said.
"lt really ~ snowballed." Bui said. "It
started with 10 peopJe. and now~
reach close to 9,000 peopre overall."
The Web site is ava.IJabje nationwide,
but started and revolves heavily around
the Newport-Mesa area, Comberiati
said With such beautiful weather, the
beach nearby and a naturally active
community, Costa Mesa and Newport
Beach residents make up a large pan of
the membership and invite others to
visit the coastal cities.

site members cydlng from Sunset Beach
to Balboa Pier. The group rode down in
an hour, had lunch at the Shorehou.se
Caf6 and caught an extremely strong
headwind on the way back, she said.
Sena also organjzed the upcoming rock
climbing Dip as a birthday party for
herself.

from this decade that I am entering.·

Upon her ascension to the
mayor-ship Monday, a few
audience members questioned
whether Robinson, a litigation
attnmey for the California State
Un.iwrsity system, would have
enough time to be mayor, a job
that often requires attendance at
ribbon-cutting ceremonies.
In her two years a5 a
councilwoman. Robinson hasn't
always been acces,gble. Earlier
this year, she sought a judgeship
that would have required her to
abandon the aty Council dais.
She wam't suooes.m.d in that
endeavor, but we have questioned
and stiD question her dewtion to
her post~ il council member, Jet
alone a5 mayor.
We hope Robinson heeds the
audience members' words and
proves her critics wrong by
becoming more accessible and
devoted to her civic duty.
Robinson has another task that
must be accomplished for the -:·
betterment of the city: unifying a
City CoUllCil that bas shown more
than enough signs that it Jacb
cohesiveness.
That doesn't mean we should
start seeing •manhmus votes, but
it does mean that the coundl
should sit down and really 8esb
out their visions fur this ~ 'Tuke
a closer look at both the~
and the so-called downtown area.
Asrure the residents that the
council ba9 an idea for the two
areas. Make the vimon clear.
It probably didn't help much
when Cowx:ilman Gary
Monahan, who was next in line to

broadsided by his colleagues with
no warning on Monday. That
situation, too, should be
smoothed OYer so the bad blood
doesn't carry OYer to the next year
ortwo.

There's much to be done in this

Downtown appears
T he die is cast. The
roulette wheel is
spinning. The dealer is
laying down the final
cani. Now, it is all about waiting
and seeing if C:Osta Mesa's
gamble on its Downtown pays
off.
For years, the personality of
Downtown -home to Triangle
Square, Goat Hill Tavern and the
long-empty 1901 Newport,
among other buildings and
businesses -has been unclear.
ls it a shopping district? An
entertainment center? ls it a
nightspot? With last month's
Planning Commission approval
of a nightclub for 190 l Newport.
formerly called Pacific Savings
Plaza. and news this week that a
new restaurant featuring dancing
is headed to niangle Square. it
appears the uncertainty is over.
Downtown is about
entertainment, espedalJy of the
late-night variety.
The gamble with this direction
is two-fold: Can the area sustain
itself in competition with the
Irvine Spectrums, the Downtown
Oisneys and the various
nigb1lp0ts in Newport Beach?
And do dty leaden understand
what more late-night fun will
meant
History offers a relatively
p:>Sitive answer to the former
gamble. While niangle Square
has had a tough decade, with
empty storefronts and
in-and-out tenants, it has had big
success in the last few years with
the Yardhouse. Other nightspots

are obvious and at their most
likely with nightclubs and bars:
increased aime. whether dnmk
driving. fights or vandalism; and
quality-of-life complaints, largely
related to noise.
So far, there seems to have
been little disQISSion about such
concerns. There ought to be, and
residents deserve an opportunity
to say what they 1hink about
plans for Downtown.
If this new conception of

continue looking for ways to add
to the area's appeal. But they
should also be prepared to
handle the inevitable problems.

bridge should be suspended
As residents of West 19th Street, we
are appalled to learn of the proposed
study to reconsider the 19th Street
bddge. This propoaal constitutes an ·
extravagant waste of money at a time
when the city. and the Westside,
clearly have more pressing ft.seal and
l.nfrutructural necessities.
For anyone familiar with the daily
condidons of this part of West 19th, .
such a propoeal, as a stalking horse to
legitimize the pro.i¢. is a complete
nonstarter. A bridge would only
inwidate the area with additional
vehlcular trafllc and compromise,
perhapl Jnedeemably;ita residential
character.
The eristtng problems of road traffic
and nolae and pedestrian eafety would
not be alleviated with oomtruction of
a bridge. Many area reUdeota are
woiklng familles with llDd children
who travel by foot and blcyde to
Whittier Blementary School via West
19th, a.acerbating the safety iasues
that would come with a higher volume
of traftic. And any supposed economic
benefits would not likely accrue in a
meaningful way to those in the
impacted area.
We commend the sensible
condusion reached by Councilman
Guy Monahan and bis fellow council
members with regard to this issue.

bridge, if any, could outweigh the

resolved one way or another In the
coming year. Whether that resolution
comes from having a city-sanctioned
study or after public hearings will be
up to the full council.
As you also know. the council has
set community objectives. We'll take
a good, bard look at those and see
what we can do to them

budget as it is, we should see where
else we can tighten out belts without
