Newport Harbor High School will stay
in a traditional sLx-period day after
teachers voted down a proposal to
change to an eight-period block
schedule.
If it had passed. the change would
have extended the school day by 25
minutes and allowed students to take
more classes.
·Not getting the required two-thirds
vote to pass the plan after working on
the project for months was like losing
a championship game al the final
buzzer, Assistant Principal Roben Cu·
nard said.
"We worked on this and put the
plan together, but at the lasl minute,
It was defeated," Cunard said. "We
were this dos~'."

block schedulC' Monday through
Thursday and on a traditional sched·
ule with shorter periods on Friday. /\

110-minute history class on Monday
and Wednesday and a 110-minute
math class on Tuesday and Thursday.

(iifbert uses dissection to take students through
the evolutionary steps of simple to complex life
fonns. They start by dissecting earthworms, then
crawfish , a nd then sometimes a shark or a perch.
After that come fro~ and higher-level organisms
such as rats, which Gilbert said led weU into
discussions of human physiology.
Doing dissecrions is essential for students
before they reach college if they want to go into a
medical o r scientific field, Gilbert said.
''If they don't have experiences like this. once
they get into ii. they're going to fall Oat on their
face." Gilbert said .

Jumping into
parenting fray

T he voicemail is effusive
and jolly.
"'Hi, Ms. Oark, this is
ShelJey's dad."' lhe voice says,
"'Just wanted to know how she's
doing and what she needs to do
to get graduated."
The message is the same as I
receive from dozen~ of other
parents of seniors at my sc.:hool.
Graduation is not a given.
especially at rontinuation
school. If the student has
changed her ways. is working
hard and attending well. tht: gual
is to indeed "get her graduated.··
I'm in contact almost daily with
many seniors' parents. and I'm
glad of that. The bei.t results
come from the parents. Lhe
teachers and c.:ounselor working
a~ a team.
The difference? I had nu idea
who this guy was.
I'd never spoken to him. I k
had not attended our new
student orientation. or any of
our bac.:k-to·school functions or
dinners. It was March, and I'd
never had a call from him
before. I wasn't even sure ii' I
could legally give him any
information.
I called Shelley\ mom. whom
I knew well.
"Is he a lt:gal guardian?" I
asked her.
"Unfortunately. ye!. ... she <,aid.
"He hasn't done much with her
the last few years. She's given up
and doesn't even try to plan
anything with him anymore. But
yes. go ahead and give him
whatever info you have to."
She sighed.
"It makes me so mad," she
said. "All of the sudden. he"s ·
going to be a hig mi'ga-dad and
take credit for her graduation."
I've seen it happen ltlany
times before. The absentee
parent ~uddenly wants 10 haw a
succt:ssful child -a child who
goes through the cap and gown
ceremony, gets the diploma and
is not a dropout. TI1e call will be
from another state. or jui.t from
across town. Often, the
implication is that the c.:urrent
parent needs 1he nonc.:ustodial
one to lea1> off a white horse and
solve tht: problem. Mighty Dad
is here to save the day.
It's not alway" the dad!., either.
And it doesn't always pertain to
graduation. I remembered one
mother who had hecn out of her
son's life until his ~octer team
made CIF playoffs and started tu
get lots of local prc~s. I le wa~
being recmited for college
socc.:er. Suddenly, she appeared
at the games rooting for her son.
"'I won't even talk to her," had
been rhe boy's bitter comment.
"Now that I'm a so-called
celebrity, she's hanging around.
Wlll're was she all the rest of my
life?"
In a 1980s m ovie. "Kramer vs.
Kramer." the mother of a young
boy leaves him and the father to
find herself. The father assumes
all child-rearing duties, as well
as full-time work and then finds
himself in a custody battle when
the mother reappears and wants
to be primary guardian. Yet,
Meryl S1reep is such a good
actor thal the viewer leaves the
movie understanding her side,
too.
And there arc two sides.
Sometimes. there's a guod
reason for a sudden appearance
of a parent. In my private
practice, one mother went into
rehab for drug addiction, having
los! custody of her children.
Afwr some years of extremely
hard work, she has her act
together is a part of her kids'
lives again. And the kids' dad
o;upports her involvement and
accomplishments. TI1ey
rominue to work as a couple for
the children's success in school
and in the community at large,
Today, a neighbor asked me
what I thought was the common
denominator of the kids I work
with who struAAfe. I thought a
minute.
"Often they've been pawns in
a divorce war." I said. "They've
been used as a o;ounding hoard
to hear tht: other parent's Oaw~.
That parent often drifts away.
and not always hy choic.:e."
I am nu! again~t divorc.:e; in
fact I support it as an option. My
ex-husband and I continue to
co-parent our daughter after
being divo rced 15 years.
Furthermore, I work with
'itudentli who are ahsolutely
wretched in intat·r but unhappy
famili es.
Uut a parent who suddenly
appears on the scene to jump
back into lheir teen's life may be
in for a shock. They aren't going
to necessarily be welcomed back
quickly or t:asily. They may not
he ahle ti) solve graduation or
ot11er problems that the custodiaJ
pan-nr has been struggling with.

have to prove themselves.

As a resident of Newport Beac.:h. and
as a longtime ob~erver of Orange
County. I have been approached uver
the years by sincere peopk• on both
sides of the issue. Many times. these
people have been literally in teari.. sn
I know how strongly lhey feel.
The reason the issue has been such
a difticult one is that three separate
issues have been rolled into one.
These three.issues are:
John Wayne Airport. As it has
grown over the years from a small
recreationaJ airport to a rather large
commercial airport, John Wayne has
indeed impacted numeroui. resident~
of Newport negar ively.
Some of my best friends live
directly under the night path. and I
sympathize ·with them. Their live~
would be made easier if the airpon
could·be closed or at least held to iti;
current size. The airport has recently
been approved to grow somewhat
more. and I understand residents'
fear that future growth might he
ahead if :.ome relief is not provided.

The Ughtning return five from last
year's squad that went 9-8 and finished
third in the Academy League.
Longoria said Sage Hill can make a
strong run for 1he league LitJe this sea·
son.
"Whitney and Fairmont played in the
I Division VJ finals of CIF." Longoria said.
"Whitney graduated nine seniors and
Fairmonl lost its 1wo top players, so I
feel we will be in contention for post·
season play."

league doubles tournament last year.

the boys team.
The girls team became the first squad
-in any sport -in the school's four·
year history to reach the CIF semifinals
after being lhe first girls team to win a
league title.
"We have a bener team this year be·
cause our returning players have
worked on their games all year and
played in I United States Tennis Associa·
tionl tournaments." l.ongoria said. "We
turned lhe comer with our girls team
last season and it appears we have done
so with our boys team."
