T bis seems to be the season of too much
of some thing5 and not enough of others.
Maybe it's too much stress, strain and
rushing from one enand to the next. or maybe
it's lack of time or sleep that is so draining.

from the frenetic pace of

recently. One woman

the more she talked, ttie
more excited the women
became.
When Julie saw the

everybody's faces, she uked if we wanted to
join her in one of her family's traditions. The
women eagerly agreed, and Julie chose a time
and a date so she could prepare and ordec the
needed supplies.
Last week. Julie helped some of us step out
of the business of this month and into her
world of making candy. She warmly let us
share in a special tradition that she bas enjoyed
ever since she was a little girl.
"My mom made candy since as long as I can
remember: Julie said happily. "She'd gather
friends together and they'd make a pecan roll
for every single member of our church. 1ben
the four of us children piled into our big old
blue station wagon ~ in our jam.mies.
and_pny dad drove my mom and us to each of
the ftouses to deliver the candy as a family. ·u wa1 something 111 never forget." she said Julie talked about her mother., her
granl.:l.mothet their Jives and their different
candy spedaldes. The more Julie talked about
almond rocca. pecan logs. hand-dipped lemon,
orange and strawberry creams. caramels,
double dipped mints, turtles, trumes and
cherry cordials, the more my mouth watered
and I knew I wanted to be part of the day.
Julie invited women she knew from biking or
church groups, as well as some neighbors.
When I left the candy-making event. I felt
encouraged and thankful for God and how he
lm proven to be so faithful to me and to so
many.
Many of those were women covered in nuts
and chocolate, who bad stirred chocolate,
scoured pans or scurried around Julie's kitchen.
It was I~ about the tasty treat.s and more
about the sweet conversations, opening up
about some of their pa.ins and gains in life.
"We are so busy these daJS that we ~
make time to do seemingly frivolous thinw; like
candy-ma.king, baking. cooking or aafting."
Nancy, another candy-maker said. "Yet when
you get a group together to do these. it
provides the dme necessary for fellowship and
frienchhip, aharlng Hfe ~ things that our
moms and grandmothen had in abundance."
Making the candy from Julie's family recipes
was great fun, and the results are deftnJteJy
delicious.. But the love. enoouragemmt and
reminders of the hope we can~ in this life
bea•lSe of God. were dearly the sweetest of aD.

Department wants to replace
its out.dated computer system
with a new one that will give
officers improved access to in·
fonnation and other benefits,
officials said
City officials are close to rec-
ommending a vendor to sup·
ply the equipment and plan to
begin the $3.3-million project
with the new year. said Rick
Kirlcbride, management infor-
mation systems manager ror
the city. The reconunendation
will likely be made to the City
Council on Monday night for
final approval, he said
Kirlcbride said the Police De-
partment's computer systems
were installed in 1982.
"They've received only mi-
nor upgrades &om time to

reading and rereading news of
the recent John Wayne Airport
SettlemeotAgieement
m en.alon· dealings c·oJC likely
on new JWA deal." Dec. 10, and
"Oty, county sign off on new
JWA agreement," Dec. 11).
After ftgbting drelessly for
over six years, I am confuaed as
to bow, on one band, the
elected officials of Newport
Beach and the majority of the
County of Orange Board of
Supervisors could preach and
sing the need for a
30-million-annual-passenger El
Toro International airport, then
so quJcldy discarded all $uch
notions, in addition to an
untold $60 million plus, then
while speaking from a different
face. present a new notion that
a mere slight expansion of John
Wayne will now more than meet
Orange County's future needs
for the next 15 years.
One can't heJp but feel
amused after reading Newport
Beach Mayor Tod Ridgeway's
and Newport Beach City Atty.
Bob Bumham's comments that
claim that "there may actually
be a diminished number of
lights out of JWA." due to
efficiently loading more
passengers on existing flights.
And since Newport Beach
cJalms that the new settlement
agreement deal "pleases
everyone," why then didn't
Newport Beach save years of
fighting and over $12 million
plus to simply craft this deal in
the first place?
To suddenly say that a
temporal, superficial expansion
of John Wayne now is all that is
needed to meet our needs
makes the elected officials of
Newport Beach complete and
total fools.
And for former Newport
Beach Councilwoman Norma
Glover to say that (the new
settlement agreement] "would
not adversely impact residents"
is downright lau ghable. Just
which residents are she .
refecring to? Obviously, South
County residents, and not
those in Newport Beach and
rest of the residents in the John
Wayne flight path corridor. ·
The soon-to-be-anoexed-to-
Newport-Beacb Santa Ana
Heights residents will surely be
adversely impacted by an
additional 2 million annual
passenger expansion, rougbJy
the size of the entire capacity
served by Long Beach Airport,
being dumped onto their
already burdened back yards.
And the notion that less flights
may occur, resulting in
projected less adverse impacts,
is In fact false. Planes bearing
more passengers may yield
greater efficiency to the
airlines, resulting in fewer
flights, but will also mean that
those same planes will now be
more heavily laden, which will
translate to louder take-offs,
hence higher levels of noise
pollution to Santa Ana Heights
and Eastbluff communities, the
two closest communities under
John Wayne's departure
corridor.
And lastly,· the intelligent,
educated residents who have
done their own math work will
see that the entire airport war
and recent John Wayne
expansion plans as
spearheaded by Norma Glover
just don't add up. Glover
personally used all her force to
prevent any reasonable airport
alternative from replacing the
county's flawed airport plan,
stonewalling every local official
or volunteer group that did not
side with her strategy and
convinced the Board of
Supervisors majority to follow
in lock step.
I feel that it is only fitting to
once again rename Orange
County Airport. This time,

the city has responded with

More innovative ideas are being
considered each day by city
government and staff' to deal
with the end result of urban
runoff. but the real long-term
solution rests with the
residents of Newport Beach. as
well as all of the residents of
the watershed extending all of
the way to the San Bernardino
Mountains.
Urban runoff (officially,
non-point source water
pollution) is a complex
problem to deal with since, by
definition, it comes from many
sources. One component can
be addressed simply and
immediately -that is the part
we as individuals contribute.
The city has an excellent Web

which points out the many
things to be aware of and what

The son of art collectors Prederlck
and Marcia Weisman of Los Angeles,
founders of the Museum of
Contemporary Art in LA., and the
oepnew of the fonnidable collector
Nortoo Simon. whose name graces !he
Pasadena museum, Weisman has an art
pedigree not shared by many.
In his own right, be has been an
international collector for more than 30
years. He decided to establish his
independence from his famous family
hy creating a book lo showcase his own
p1CS0nal penchant for art collecting.
"I sold a large portion of the
collection in 1989 when the art market
was at it's peak." Weisman told the
crowd. "The prices being paid at that
time made It hard to say no. But I admit
that I was lucky, and I'd rather be lucky
than smart any day."

Fleabitten group debuts with roma,ntic comedy

younger, the result might
have looked a lot lib Jack
Neary's "Jerf)' Finnegan's
Sliter."
This two-character, offbeat
romantic comedy, which
ushers in the new Fleabitten
·Productions theater
company, is playing
weekends through Dec. 22 at
the Costa Mesa Civic
Playhouse, the group's first,
but probably not last, venue.
All in all, it's an auspicious
beginning.
It's really difficult to view
director Gregory Cohen's
imaginative staging of this
show without recalling some
of Allen's cinematic travails
-except here the two future
lovebirds are basicalJy the
same age. They're next-door
neighbors Brian and Beth,
who meet when he's about to
turn 10 and "quit playing
with girls."
Naturally. that feeling is
short-lived, artd Brian
gradually warms up to the
concept that Beth may
become more than just a
playmate or buddy. But
Bdan is plagued by Woody's
Alfred £. Neuman syndrome
-in other words, he's a bit
of a dork -while Beth
becomes more and more
desirable. and less
accessible, as she begins
dating a rapid succession of
suitors.
We never see these guys, of

course. Nor do we see Jerry
Finnegan, Brian's best friend.
Brian (Joe Hogan) narrates
the story as he's experiencing
it, bringing Beth (Jessica
Culaciati) on stage for the
highlight moments, of which
there are many.
Hogan, although
encountering a few timing
lapses on opening night,
ingratiates himself with the
audience -particularly the
male members, who can
conjure up their own
awkward momen ts from
their teenage dating
experiences. If you're sitting
down front, you may find
yourself placed momentarily
ih the action when Hogan
blissfully breaks through the
fourth wall to accentuate his
point.
His accounts of dating
disasters -particularly an
extended plece about
unwisely choosing to taunt
an actor during a one-man
performance in bis school
gym -are especially
amusing. But bis best
moments come near the end
of the play when he finally
musters the courage to
approach Beth and suggest a
