year-old Aaron Ludlow never

by dancing girls. And a potential
invitation to appear on NThe To-
night Show."

an idea and pursue it, even kids
get listened to, if you pursue it

Ooud, the principal at Aaron's
school, Adams Elementary In
Costa Mesa.
Aaron, a fifth-grader, couldn't
believe it when his school
stopped offering pizza for lunch
every Thursday and switched to
every other Thursday.
"I was enraged," Aaron said.
"They, canceled it and didn't let
anyone know."

"I'm an· engineer, so I know

your opinion is important,"

The results showed the stu-
dents overwhelmingly favored
pizza.
"It turns out that out of 389
students who participated, 371
wanted the pizza back every
Thursday," Aaron said. "That's
95%."
When Mark Reed, general
manager of the Cluck E. Oleese
In Torrance, caught wind of
Aaron's crusade·. he was in-
spired ..
•Aaron did something I Wish I
had done when I was 11 ," Reed
said.
So Reed made some calls and
ultimately arranged for a live
Oiuck E. Oleese show to come
to Adams Elementary to enter-
tain the students. On Friday, the
company donated 100 large
cheese pizzas and put on three
shows.
While Adams stCldents mer-'
rily chowed down on pizza,
Aaron shied away from taking
the credit.
All because he took a stand
and followed the correct chan-
nels in expressing his beef -
well, more like his pepperoni -
to the Newport-Mesa Unified
School District.
He expressed his chagrin to
his mom and suggested distrib-
uting a petition to bring the
weekly pizza back. His mom,
So Aaron submitted the re-
sults with a letter to Richard
Greene, the district's director of
food services. On Dec. 4, Greene
declared that the piz.za would
return every Thursday.

It's all about red, white and
blue foe Paul Gerst.
He's celebrating the spirit of
America this year at the 94th
annual Christmas Boat Parade.
His boat, named Elation, de-
scribes its owner's state of mind
when he sees the 36-foot sail-
boat lighted up in patriotic col-
ors, complete with Frosty the
Snowman sporting an Uncle
Sam bat and perched on a large
golden gift box.
This is Gerst's fifth year in the
parade, and he enjoys it every
year with his wife and son. The
boat, Gerst said, is decorated
entirely by sons Paul Jr. and
John Gerst and their longtime
buddies, Paul Undley and Rich
Russell. All attended Corona
del Mar High School.

said. "And that's just such a
good feellng."

took in the view from the safety of
the front lawn.
Every now and then, a boal
would draw Kendal's attention, and
she would venture over for a closer
look. The curly-haired blond could
not resist a modest boat pulling a
water sJcilng Santa Oaus and made
her way to the bank to get a peak at
the craft, which was dwarfed by the
surrounding yachts.
The Bumands, who live in New-
port Shores, have a tradition of
watching the parade from their
own boat, but decided to join the
land-loving spectators this ·year.

ceU phone conversation while driving on Mac-
arthur Boulevard toward John Wayne Airport?
How about on Irvine Avenue near the nature
center?
If you thought you were the only one whose
cell phone went dead in some spots of the city,
think again. Newport Beach is home to a num-
ber of such udead spots: where carriers' sig-
nals almost never reach.
But thanks in part to a new city policy, ceJJu-
lar dead zones could become a thing of the
past.
The city's Telecommunications Committee
has proposed aggressively pursuing relation-
ships with cellular companies 10 get them to
install antennas in some WlSel"Ved areas.
UNow that the city's going to become a land·
lord to cellular phone companies. the advan·
tage is that we can hopefully fill in these dead
zones." said Coundhnan John Heffernan. who
serves on the committee.
ln response to some tempting offers from
ceDular phone companies, the City Council in
October ~ an ordinance that allows the
city to lease space for cellular antennas. No
deals have been stnJdc yet. but they are esti-
mated to bring in S20.000 to $30,000 per year
per cellular site.
The original plan was for Newport 8eadl to
sit back and let the proposals come rolling in.

poverished Westside, the other
for his own upscale neighbor-
hQod.
Robert Graham has consis-
tently pushed for a bridge at
I 9Jh Streel but opposes one at
Gisler Avenue. On Tuesday, the
Fola.ntain Valley City Council
voted to fund a study of the fea-
sibility of a bridge on the Mesa
Verde s Lreet.

Ci!)' Hall insiders fear Gra-
ham's relentless pursuit of a
19th Street bridge. and the sub-
sequent vote by a council-ap-
pointed committee to study the
project independently, sends
the same message of deception
as actions by Fountain Valley of-
ficials to study a bridge at Gis-
ler.
While Collins said he bad no
knowledge of the committee's
official vote to study the ben-
efits of a 19th Street bridge, he
said It does raJse a noteworthy
point. The Fountain Valley
mayor said that Graham's argu-
ment is a reasonable one and
should be used in favor of the
Gisler Avenue bridge study, as
weU.

are some of the tens of millions in
this country who do not have
medical insurance.
At the Orange Coast interfaith
Shelter, families are housed,
clothed and fed for 90 days.
Adults get job training if needed
and great anempts are made to
aeate as nonnal a life as possible
for the children who pas.s
through.

ooorageous year long battle
with cancer. Barbara,
affectionately known as Babs,
to all of her family and
frlends, was born Barbara
Joan Featherston. Barbara
graduated from Newport
Hart>or High School, and
attended Orange Coast
College. She spent many
years in the Fashion Industry,
wondng for Robinson-May
Company.
Beloved by her extended
family of nieces and
nephews, and their children,
she will be greatly missed. A
loyal and sincere friend, a
loving daughter, a devoted
sister, and a wonderful
dedicated mother.

death by her beloved son,

her beloved son, Bradley

Sailors win, 46-33, take third place
•GIRLS: Three players scored in double figures and the
Newport Harbor High girls basketball team took thlrd place
ln the Valley Ouistian Tournament with a 46·33 victory
against Los Osos Friday at Valley Christian High.
Jlllianne Whitfield (13), Victoria Swigart (12), and Vanessa
Miller (10) led the Sailors (7-3) in sconng. Lindsey Woller had
nine rebounds and Whitfield and Swigart each added six
boards for Newport, which won four games all of last year.
Swigart shot 4 of 7 from the field and Whitfield was 3-of-5
shooting with one three-pointer. ·
"We started out slowly but we came on strong ln the sec-
ond half," said Newport Coach Jen Thompson. •The girls
have come a long way since last year. The turnaround has
been awesome for them."
Woller and Whitfield made the all-tournament team.

learned at Newport Harbor, Rots aald. In
1998, Roel helped lead the Sallon to a CIF
Saale championsbip and along the way she
received a valuable asset that abe continues

"Playtngai Newport taught me how to
work ha.rd," said Ross. who is blown for her
competitive fervor. "l le&med that you can't

work hard, &hat's what Dan Glenn
hammered to me. I definitety still have that
with me today.•
Glenn, who coached Newport Harbor to
the state title and continue$ to instill values
as the head inan of the Sailors, remembers
Ross as. •one of the most competitive
people I have ever coached.• Glenn has
followed Ross' career at USC and has
remained close to her and her family. He
was there when Ross sent down with the
Injury last year and he watched her when
the Trojans advanced to the Anal Four at
UC Santa Barbara this season.
"I'm really excited for them (Ross and
Jennifer c.arey of Hawaii) to be in the Final
Four this year; Glenn said. "It's been fun to
watch (Ross') development. Every year she
has just gorten better. She's extremely smart.
She really understands the game. She's
able to mix it up and she'll always bring a lot
of heat."
Today, against the c.ardinal, Ross will
assuredly bring heat along with the emotion
she has carried with her throughout her
time at USC. although shes not thinlcing
about the past.
"I don't think about anything from this
year to this year," Ross said. "I thinlc the fact
that we didn't finish where we wanted to last
year has been motivation for us. My team
has been playing amazing. The fear of
getting injured, I really don't have that Thal
really doesn't affect me.·
