spokesperson Jane Garland said,
"This was not just pink shirts.
They came wearing pink
armbands, pink shoelaces and
black shoes."
Ensign Principal Ed Wong
asked the boys to either de -pink
themselves or forego the photo.
Dr. Wong's concern was that
certain colors could be
a'>sociated with gangs and "party
crews,". neither of which have
any place in a class photo.
Do you know what a party ·
crew is? Neither did I.
It took a little digging. There is
no substitute for being thirtee n
when it comes to these things
and I was thrown out of O ub 13
long. long ago. Party crews are
groups of kid~ who show up at
parties and dances -e pecially
organized parties called "raves"
-with a particular color or
"look" as their tradem ark. Not
only do they dance their hearts
out and their patoots off, but
they get very competitive with
o ther "crews" in the process.
Think of Tony Manero and his
buds in·"Saturday Night Fever:·
Fast-forward 30 years. make
the leisure suits hot pink or
purple or whatever and wham -
a "party crew." The problem is.
also not unlike Tony Manero and
company, when the dance-off
gets a little too hot. party crews
can develop a decidedly dark
side.
According to Costa Mesa
Police Sgt. Tim Schennum, some
gar.g members start their walk
along the road to perdition on a
party crew. Dr. Wong wasn't
saying these particular boys were
involved in any malevolence. He
was just being cautlous.

The approach of her 5Uth birthday
this summer made her decide to
• spruce up her appt•arancc, she said.
Katz has also tried collagen and
another "filler" called Res1ylane. she\
had her eyelids done. and she·s on her
second set of braces 10 straighten her
teeth.
"I just felt that I wanled to look Knod
turning 50." she said.
Al first she didn·1 1ell her family ahoul
the Botox, but they wondered why she
looked better. The idea unnerved Deborah Fonseca
a bit. Working as an aesthetician in a
Newport Beach salon. Fonseca met a
doctor who offered Botox and she saw
people he had treated -and noticed
how good they looked.

When she did spill the St'C'rE'I. their
reactions weren't negative, she said.
Katz said Botox is perfect for her
because its quick and won't cause the
kind of allergic reaction she had during
her eyelid surgery. was more than a year ago. "It took me a year before I would
walk into his business," she said. "I was
still afraid or It.''
But after she saw Botox erase the
angry line between a friend's eyebrows,
she was convinced. Her first Botox shot
Botox injections have become
increasingly popular since the late
1980s, partly because they are one of
the fastest and least invasive cosmetic
procedures.
People also like it because they look
a bit younger but It's subtle and less
dramatic than a face-lift. said Steve
Yoelin, a Newport Beach
ophthalmologist who began offering
Botox about three years ago.
"It's a pretty invasive surgery. and
this. I can go back 10 work from here,"
she said.

airport would require a minimum of

to be obtained hy condemnation of
land~ now occupied by residences and
commrrcial or industrial buildings ..

tnormous -well over $3 billion. Add
to that the permanently lost property
taxei; and other revenue sources .
derived from those properties, would

a lecturer or preparing for an

excuses to show up at the library

group at 9: 15 a.m. every second
Wednesday of the month.

course, literature and foreign policy.
This year. we're mostly concentrnting
on lhings that will be more applicable
in an election year. The economy was
our first lecture, with Lori Wallach, and
she talked about the World Tr-dde
Organization. We didn't have the
attendance we would have liked ,
because it's a heavy suhject. hur
people who did come really hkcd it.

on the environment, and in April we'll
have Gen. Anthony Zinni, and he'll talk
on the American military. war,
peacekeeping. and military

Soderberg. a former U.N. ambassador.
and she'U talk on the United Nations.

enjoyed belng here. When he left. he
said, 'I had such a good time,' and I
could tell he really meant it. He stayed
in the library till after 11 o'clock on
Friday night. A lot of the speakers. you
know, they're ready to go back to their
hotel room, but be just had a
wonderful time and didn't want it to
end ... He was so relaxed, sincere and
interested in everyone.

year. We suffered from a lack of
publicity, I think, for Lori Wallach this
year. Her lecture was really a highly
significant one, and maybe it was dry
as dust, I don't know, but we didn't get
the turnout I wouJd have liked for that.
