' 'Friends" fans still recovering from last night's tear-jerker
should brace themselves for a
shock they weren't expecting;
Marcel the monkey is a girl.
As if that weren't enough, the duck from
"Friends" is actually somewhere between 12
and 18 ducks. And, the Icing on the cake:
Marcel wasn't so tight with her 1V owner,
Ross, played by David Schwimmer. in fact, it
was Courteney Cox Arquette who bonded
best with the diminutive monkey.
"She ended up working with Monica most
so I'd say they got along the best,• said Cllad
Dunn, trainer for Studio Animal Services,
who worked with Marcel on the set of
"Friends."
The ."friends" animals threw a farewell
party and screenlng for the show's final
episode at Diedrich Coffee on Jamboree
Road, with a little help from the people at
Star 98.7.
The stadon had its "Fnends" finale party
Thursday night at the coffee house, where
about 70 or 80 lucky listeners got to watch
the final episode on two big-screen 1Vs
alongside radio personalities Lisa Foxx and
Jason Pullman. The event was just one of
many across the country to mark the end of
the 10-year-long NBC sitcom that spawned
everything from movie careers to fashion
and hairstyle trends.
"We love Orange County.· Pullman said.
"We have a lot of listeners in the O.C. and we
always have a good time here."

County District Anomey's office
charged an:hitect Andrew Goetz on
Thursday with 26 felony counts of
CIJlng false and forged maps that al-
lowed a number of homes in Co-
rona del Mar and other areas to be
built larger than city rules permit.
If convicted, Goetz could serve
up to 11 years in prison .
John Barnett, Goetz's attorney for
the criminal charges, declined to
comment.
Goetz was arrested on Oct. 15 af-
ter Newport Beach building plan
checkers and other staff members
reported suspicious inconsistencies

learned that there was a group
called the Republican Jewish Coa-
lition in Orange CoWlty.

He noted how not that many
years ago, a Jewish group would
have bad a difficult time forming
In Orange CoWlty. but that there
bas been a growing acceptance of
other denominations through the

"When dealing with religion
and polldcs, what other Issues can

summer because children are
home from school and don't get
breakfast or lunch there, postal
service officials said.

my Oldest daughter. Nearly three
decades ago, on my 25th birthday. I
went into labor and gave birth the
following morning.

keep her on the

seemed like a nice little cat, only the
shelter worker Wormed us that she
had been there for 7 of her 9 years
and that she has to be sedated to be
groomed every six months because
But that was in another lifetime, a
lifetime before the Mmothering of

me, ldcldng and screaming. into
becoming the person I already was
and am today. rm no dope. I knew
very clearly that we were a misfit and
that my style of parenting was not
working. And my heart was sick about
it And somehow out of all the pain
Wld tumult, I found a way out for
both of us. I learned to listen and to
see. I learned to feel my way into her
world, to empathiz.e, and to
understand what was true for her in
the only way I could -through sheer
love of this chUd. I learned to be
attuned.

• , packaged. People would stop me on
the street to tell me how pretty she
was, but she was anything but easy. In
fact. had there been a return poUcy,
there were certainly times when 1<1
have brought her back for a full
, . refund In the end though, she has
turned out to be life's gift to me. rather
than just my 25th birthday present.
<:arolyn was a dillicult child. She
was emotional and temperamental
Her moods shifted quickly but she did
not change gears readily. She had a
particular little way of seeing things
and was not easily swayed. Mostly,
she threw tantrums. And to make
matters worse, she was fearless -or
at least way less afraid of things than I
was.
At the time, I thought that was a
consequence of attention-deficit
disorder -that she could never see
how bad her course of action was
going to tum out wuil the catastrophe
was upon her. Tuday, I know It's just
part of her genetic makeup.

know what to do to settle her down

hard as I could to get It right

to learn that good
parenting means you allow your
chlldren to create their own life in
their own little ways, just so long as
they keep life and limb together Wld
safe in the process.
That was then, a long time ago, Wld
this is now. And at the beginning of
this year, <:arolyn moved into her own
living space. Since San Francisco Is so
expensive. she could afford only a
teacup or an aparunent, or so she
said I imagined I would walk in the
door this weekend Wld trip over her
bed, trying to get into the room, but it
wasn't at all like that
She has two good-sized rooms,
adorned in her own shabby chic
mode, a hodge-podge of styles Wld
pieces put together in an
ever-so-aesthetically pleasing way.
The Ooor in one room slants up Wld
in the other It slants down, which is
not really a problem unless you're
drunk or have a major hartgover.
I didn't want to be a tourist
Window shopping is just too boring
so we did together the things she
needed to get done. The major event
of the day was a trip to Pets
Unlimited, a private animal shelteL
<:arolyn wants to adopt a cat and
she'd already gone there and found
one she liked. She wanted to show her
to me. Her name was Shelby and she

she refuses to groom herself. .
OK. things are not looking so good.
I could foresee that this cat was going
to be a major expense and I was
wondering how she was going to
adjust. if at all, to a new environment,
given the only home he bas ever
known is that one small room.
<:arolyn, true to form, was way less
concerned than I was, but to her
credit, she was not ignoring the facts
altogether.
Oh no, let's not go there again.
I gently suggested that maybe we
wanted to go take a look at another
shelter. I got a good response and off
we went The San Francisco Society of
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is
like a palace. Many of the rooms
housing the cats are bigger than my
bathrooms. No joke! The volunteer
told us they had 69 cats that were
available for ndoption.
Carolyn looked overwhelmed at
that but we started the rounds
anyway. By the time we hit hallway
No. 3, we'd seen probably 15 cats. We
stepped into the hallway and Carolyn
burst imo tears. Sobblng and laughing
at the same time, she was distressed
at deserting poor Shelby. who'd never
be adopted by anyone else given that
she hadn't been chosen in all these
years.
1Wenty years ago, had this
happened, I would have thought she'd
lost her mind. I probably would have
been critical. I might have told her not
to be silly. that lt was not such a big
deal. to just pull It together and let's
get on with it Not sensitive to. nor
understanding how she was feeling
and what this meant co her.
Standing there in the hallway with
cats meowing on all sides. I put my
arms around her and let her sob. And
I said. "Let's go. We don't have to do
this. Shelby's your cat It doesn't have
to make sense. It makes emotional
sense.·
At that, she pulled herself together
and said she wanted to see the other
cats. Golly. what a Unle bit of
attunement can do.
I decided this proof of positive
parenting would m8ke for a good
column Wld began to write after I got
home. I was snapped out of my
writer's dau when the phone rang. I
answered it. It was <:arolyn.
"Gee, you sound odd,· she said.
"'You OK?"
"Yup. Sure am. Just writing about
you and the weekend," I said
"I love you. too.· she repUed.

Uiances are, they were born right here
in Costa Mesa Certainly South Coast
Repertory has made significant
conttibutlons to original scripts over the
years. and this weelend the birthing pains
begin again.
Toni~t through Sunday, SCR will stage
its seventh annual Notional Playwrights'
Fesllval. This Is the project that brought
plays like /\my Freed's "The Beard of
Avon" and Richard Greenberg's MTI1e
Violet Hour" to life -and eventually to
full production on the SCR stage.
The theater's current productions of
Freed's "Safe in HeU" on the Segerstrom
Stage and Noah Haldle's "Mr. Mannalade"
on the Julianne Argyros Stage are part of
the festival, sharing the spotlight with four
staged rcadinS' sandwiched Into the odd,
dark moments. with a couple of familiar
names (Greenberg and Craig Lucas)
involved ln the process.
The festival begins today with
"Vesuvius" by Lucinda Coxon, offered at a
1 p.m. matinee on the Argyros Stage. This
story is set in Naples. in the shadow of
that fearsome volcano, as a man and
woman arrive separately, expecting
peaceful holidays. SCR co-founder David
Em.mes Is directing -and also will stage
the play in its world premiere at SCR next
April.
Meanwhile, on the Segerstrom Stage,
Samh Ruhl's "The Oean House" will be
given a staged reading at 3:30 p.m. It
centers around 1 Brazilian cleaning
woman with a contagious sense of humor.
BW Rauch is directing the reading, and
Kate Whoriskey (M Antigone") will stage the
world premiere ot SCR next January.
Lucas. once o mainstay ot the Costa
Mesa theater ("Blue Windows.· "Prelude
too Kiss"), returns with "The Singing
Forest," to be previewed Saturday at 10:30
a.m. on the Segerstrom Stage. This story
l'eVolv,es around the second-richest man
in the world and the Oprah Winfrey show.

Willy" -this was all before graduating from
Newport Harbor High School in 1995.
For the soft-spoken, affable Moreau, 26,

Marguerite Moreau, a graduate of Newport
Harbor High, stars in 'Off the Lip,' a comedy

York. His adversary is the pqually
capable, uptight, junk-food
junkie Audrey Woods (Julianne

the book. Naturally, they are

her huge diamond earrings than

These two wage war in the
courtroom but we can teU they
are falling for each other. We
know this because just before a
tender moment ensues, the
violins sweU up and before we
know It, these guys have

Things get rather nasty when
Daniel and Audrey become
opposing counsel in a divorce
between a rock star and his
designer wife, whose main point
of contention is the ownership
of a rustic Irish castle. This is
really just a plot device to

festival in a small town and

I t's the gateway to the communJty,
the face of Corona del Mar that
rouns a first impression to visltors
from near and far. Along and near the
stretch of East Coast Highway that
forms the backbone or Corona del Mar
are the businesses that form the
community's core.
"It's a hodgepodge,• said Dennis
O'Neil, fonner mayor of Newport Beach
and a resident or Corona del Mar for 15
years. "It's a mixture or small
neighborhood retail uses with some
significant and outstanding commercial
enterprises that combine in a way that
helps make CoTona del Mar a very
special place."
lndeed, Corona del Mar is at the same
time a resldential neighborhood. a
wildly popular beach area and a quaint
shopplng and dinlng area strangely
situated along a major bJghway.
Some are new, some are very old, and t~gether they create a sum greater than
Its parts.
Five Crowns and Coco's and the Quiet
Woman are quintessential eumples of
longtime Corona del Mar businesses
that make an Important contribution to
the neighborhood's Identity. Five
Crowns is a 6.ne-dlnJng establishment
best known for Its prime rib and
represents Corona del Mar well at the
annual Taste or Newport festival
Banderas and 2'J.nc ear~ are two
newcomers that locals have also
embraced for their addition to the'
overall ambience. In fact, when Zinc
ear~ wanted to extend it hours without
complying with city rules that would
have required the caU to add 11 more
parldng spaces, a half dozen Corona del
Mar resklenta showed up at a City
Council meeting to implore the council
to support the restaurant's request. The
reason, they said, is because Zinc added
so much ~the area.
But while restaurants, coffee houses
and juice joints get the most attention
from out-of-town visitors, locals know
that It's the mix or merchants that make
the local buslness community
complete.
For example, residents who rattle off
lists or busines es integral to the
community almost always mention
John Blom Photography. The studio's
•owner and namesake is one of the
community's movers and shakers, active
in everything from village beautification
to the community's own Olamber of
Commerce. Nearly a dozen real estate
companies, including Prudential right
on East Coast Highway, are members.
In the 100 years slnce Corona del Mar
was born, many businesses have come,
but relatively Cew have gone.
Community activist and former
Corona del Mar chamber president B.J.
Johnson listed some memorable fonner
members or the business community.
"There was Hayden's Bay Wmdow,
that was Luvena Hayden's place. Then
right at the comer near Prudential's
office there was an old drug store there
for years and years. There was a vacuum
store. And I remember there was a
men's shop," Johnson said "Most of the
older businesses are still around, but
those are the ones that left."
Like the village it.aelf, Corona del
Mar's business district continues to
change. But throughout the years, locals
say, the spirit of the community stays
the same.
"Thia part of the city has been able to
thrive and prosper while having a major
thoroughfare running dght through It
and having businesses on that busy
thoro~are and homes tight next to
the business," O'Neil said. ~ in Itself

orderly catalogs of the Sherman Ubrary.
The Sherman Ubrary bulldlng,
cloaked lo untamed Ivy, has
transformed nearly as dramatically as
the Paci.fie Southwest landscape. whose
history ls found withing Its walls. It
started as a small adobe house, m the
middle of Arnold D. Haskell's property,
which included bis reputed gardens and
counry otnces. It was later converted
Into office buildings and even later, ln
the 1960s. Into a library.
Bill Hendricks, who hs been at the
library for 39 years, said It ls the library's
mission to help all Interested parties
learn more about this coastal landscape.
The library, part of the overall
Shennan Ubrary & Gardens, contains
about 25,000 books, pamphlets and
other printed Items; a very sizable
number of maps and photographs;
several hundred thousand papers and
documents: and more than 2,000 reels
of microfilmed material, officials said.
Among the mJcrofllm holdings are bac.lc
files of several of the regjon's earliest
newspapers, including the Los Angeles
Tunes from Its beginnings ln J88l.
Hendriclcs recalls an aspiring author
who was writing a novel set in California

Growing up
takes 100 years
'The Crown of the Sea' has come a long way from its
origin as a remote farming community

I n a vast expanse of useless land, It
was some of the mosl useless
around.
Oceanfront property in Corona del
Mar was worthless for grazing cattle
because of ilS steep slopes and
ravines in which cattle oflen gol
caught. A Uttle farther inJand, the
Irvine Co. could command a decent
$750 for a lot on top of a hill with an
ocean view. But that was before the
drought. • By 1904, a dry spell crippled
agriculture In the area and sent
demand plummeting. On June 29,
George Hart bought a 706-acre comer
of the Irvine ranch for the cosl of
$150 an acre, On that day, a viJlage
was born.
-That's the day we mark as the
birth or the village of Corona del
Mar," said Wade Roberts, director of
the Sherman Library & Gardens and
volunteer for the community's
centennial celebration's planning
committee, -That's our birthday."

Besides things like a beach party
and a black tie gala, the celebration
will include a strong emphasis on the
village's history with historic photo
exhibits and presentations to
illuminate the history and mysteries
of Cor~na de! Mar's past.
For example, in the village's earliest
year, the letter Din ·del· was
uppercase. But when the area got its
own post office. the postmaster
recorded the village's name with a
lowercase D In order to follow correct
grammar for the Spanish name. After
that official documentation, the new
non-capitalization of the name
became official.
The origin or the flower street
names, however, was a mystery that
took longer to unfurl. In the village's
early years, all of Corona de! Mar's
streets were numbered,
corresponding with the numbered
streets across the water on the
peninsula. At one point, however,
numbered streets became Marigold,

relatively sleepy rural area until the countywide growth boom in the 1960s

recently, no one knew when or why
the change was made.

parcel of Corona de! Mar from Hart,
decided that the numbers did
nothing to lure potential residents to
the site. To help paint a better picture
of the paradise he was promoting,
Cornell replaced the numbers with
the colorful flower names.
Corona de! Mar was a sleepy
unincorporated village of Orange
County until 1924 , when a
seven-member governing body voted
unanimously fo join the city of
Newport Beach. For many years, the
only accesi. to Corona del Mar was a
dirt road winding around Upper

was the only way to access Corona
del Mar until Coast Highway came

Though the new thoroughfare laid
the groundwork for a Oedgling

through obstacles, and everyone seems
convinced that, sooner or later, the
beautification will be completed.
"Mansionlzation" is more
controversial. Q>rona del Mar's
skyrocketing land values have inspired
....,__." many to raze quaint cottages and build
in their place sprawling dream homes
~~~· that cover as much of each lot as the city
allows. Some say this trend is destroying
the quaint character of Q>rona del Mar;
others say that property owners have a
right to build their dream homes and
that these new houses are beautiful
besides.
But everyone agrees this
phenomenon is changing Corona del
' Mar from a low-key community into
