Girl, now 18, testifies in gang-rape trial

Spann had videotaped the two of them
having sex once before at a friend's
house. but she spotted the camera half-
way through.

prosecutors say was gang-raped by
three teenagers while unconscious took
the i.tand Tuesday and cold the court
she had consensual sex with two de-
fendants. but remembers nothlng about
the aJJeged rape.
The girl. identified by the prosecution
only ru. Jane Doe, spoke slowly and
clearly as she answered Deputy Dbt.

room on the 11th floor was packed and
Greg HaidJ, sun of Orange County As-
sistant Sheriff Don Hclidl. Kyle Na-
chreiner and Keith Spann are accused of
raping the girl and sexually assaulting
her with various objects. The purported
incident happened during the Fourth of
July weekend in 2002 at Don Haidl's Co-
rona del Mar home.
Jurors have seen a W-minute digital
videotape of the alleged rape made by

William Dunham, 21, of Costa

seat and died instantly as a result

22, driving Dunham's car. was air-
lifted from Lhe scene but died

gration won't be fought in emer-
gency rooms. at least for now.
The House of Representatives
on Tuesday overwhelmingly re-
jected a bill Rep. Dana Rohra-
ba~er wrote that would have re·
quired hospitals to check the
lminigration status of nonciti-
u(ls seeking care and make that
data available to lmmlgration au-
thorities. Hospitals would only
ha!te been required to collect the
data if they wanted federal reim-
bursement for treating illegal Im-
migrants who couldn't pay .
Rohtabacher was not available
for comment Tuesday. but ln a
written statement he attributed
the bill's defeat to misinforma-
tion spread by *an unholy alll-
ance between big business and
Jeft-wing activiscs. •
lmmlgration reform has often
been a Republican platform. but
many of Rohrabacher's GOP col·
leagues voted against the bill, de-
feated with 88 votes in favor and
331 votes against

UC IRVINE -Students ar-
rested in a campus protest last
month will not face prosecution bu~ will be disciplined by the
un,lverslry.
More than a dozen students
have received an official warning
from the universiry, said Mat·
thew Cardinale. graduate stu-
dent and protest organizer. Nine
students were arrested in April
wtien they blocked a work crew
from entering the Irvine Mead·
ows West campus trailer park.

"The (district attorney's) office
dropped the charges due to the
fact that the university sald it
would handle this administra-
tively," said Al Brown. chief or

Students who, like Cardinale,
were not arrested aJso received
warnings after meeting with uni·
versity officials. The warnings
will stay in their files and could
lead to further disciplinary ac-
tion, like expulsion, If they have
more problems, Brown said.
The actual charges and accu-
sations were not made available
until after his disciplinary meet-
ing. Cardinale said, and he plans
to fight the decision.
"I didn't get a Cair hearing."
Cardinale said. "They'd already
made their decision. To me, you
can't let something stay on your
record if it's not true.~
The Wliversity could not com·
ment on student discipline be·
cause of confidentialiry laws,
sald William Zeller, assistant vice
chancellor of student housing.
Irvine Meadows West is set to
close July 31 to make way for a
parking structure. Students have
known about the impending clo·
sure since 1999. Zeller said.
The nine arrests were made af-
ter students attempted to block a
work crew from entering the site
for soil sampling. Students un·
willing to face arrest were al·
lowed to leave and sampling
took place after the arrests.
The university's action again.st
the students who were not ar-
rested, however, has caused Car-
dinale to question the system.

tests and create an atmosphere
of fear," he sald.

for her car keys so the two could

The next thing she remembers

"My body felt very we&k and I

pened to her, but said she had a
"gut feeling" that something was

long-serving trustees have been

racking up six-digit travel expenses in

During this time, the coast district
had the highest administrator to
teacher ratio in all of Orange County.
Perhaps they still do. Faculty members
spoke out about administrative waste,
inefficiency and lack of accountability
and collegial.tty. The fact is that both
Golden West and Orange Coast
coUeges' administrations in 1994 far
exceeded the other community
coUeges in Orange County. But of
course there was no movement on the
pan of the board to downsize
administrative staff. And, after
commissioning management stud.ie~
that totaled more than $100.000, how
many of the various consultants'
well-researched recommenddtions
were ever implemented?
So. has anything really changed? Are
we taxf}ayers still dumrrues? My
conclusion is that these trustees are
still conunuing to use bad judgment
and are displaying their usual
arrogance. Residents in the coast
district need to Insist that each of our
taxpayer dollars benefit the actual
classrooms, rather than being funneled
into accounts that allow travel junkets,
expensive conferences. catered board
meet1ngs and the doling out of.
perhaps, the highest administrative
salaries in Orange County.
We have a right to expect a high level
of trust and competency from this
board but are we getting it? The board
member in our area is Walter Howald.

pathetic. The truth about community
college admlnlstrator salaries is that
you can't pay enough to the good ones
and it Is dam difficult to get rid of the
bad ones.
The same is true about faculty.
The real money problems at the
community coUeges -and I suspect
public education in general -is the
proUferation of noninstructional
positions, as weU as what is called
~release time." Indeed, the state passed
a 50% law. which requires districts to
spend at least 50% of their budgets on
clas.sroom instruction. Imagine that -
50%. And yet a number of colleges
would request waivers and receive them.
Under Its new chancellor, Coast
Community College District has the
opportunity to reexamine how it
spends its non-classroom budget and
make the necessary adju'itments to

opportunities· for Dan Glenn to use the ex·
pected excuse, but he would not go there.
After his Newport Harbor High boys volley·
ball team lost in four games to visiting Long
Beach WUson, Glenn discussed what went
wrong, instead of season-ending injuries to Ja·
mle Diefenbach and Brett Perrine. He talked
about the good, but mostly the bad. That's what
happens when a season ends
too early in the OF Southern • Section Division l playoffs.
Wilson (29·5) used its athleti·
ct.sm to upset the Sallors, 27 ·25,
21 -25, 25·18, 25·20 In the sec·
ond round of the CIF Division I
playoffs Tuesday.
"We made too many errors,~ said Glenn.

Dlefenbach tore his anterior cruciate Uga·
ment during the basketball season and Perrine
tore his meniscus. Both injuries. obviously,
caUsed shifts in the Sailors' lineup. However,
Glenn said the Sailors were prepared for the
Bruins.
Newport Harbor answered a loss in the first
game with a spirited 25·21 victory. But Wilson
exposed the Sailors, who appeared out of sync,
in the third game.
"We felt like we didn't play with energy in that
third game,• said Glenn, who reacted by chang·
ing his lineup in the fourth game. "We tried
something dlJfenmt. I just wanted a different
look."
Glenn had hoped the change would spark the
Sailors. Sophomore Ted Slater energized the
Sailo111 in the fourth game. Newport trailed,
11 ·5, but outscored the Bruins, 6-2, as Slater
contributed two kills and a block. during the

persevered.

few weeks ago reminded us all
that summer is just around the
comer.
With the onset of warmer tern·
peratures. longer days and
thoughts of vacalions creeping
onto the radar, more people will
undoubtedly 'head to area golf
courses to snag tha1 4 p.m. tee
time that will slill allow them to
complete 18 holes -provided
the group in front doesn't con-
form to the slow-play mantra.
But courses not only attract the
late-afternoon golfer this time of
year, they also lure nonprofits
and charities wishing to widen
their visibility while capitalizing
on golfs appeal 10 raise money.
Golf tournaments generate
substantial funds for a charity
and an out1e1 for people to have
fun, play golf, enjoy the hospital-
ity each course offers. along with
networking and making busin~
contacts.
"It's an opportunity for us to
get to know ow corporate spon·
sors and a way to introduce our-
selves to new people,· said Nicole
Suydam. the director of develop-
ment for Goodwill Industries of
Orange C.Owtty, which provides
job training and placement pro·
grams for people with disabilities
and other barriers to employ·
ment.
Just as each charity is different
in the cause it promotes, so are
the golf courses in which organi·
z.ations they bring in and how
many tournaments they hold

hosts 28 to 32 charity tourna-
ment.a a year with most occurring
on Mondays. when the course is
closed to members.

staging a rharity tournament.
"It's an executive target for us
to reach businesses and corpora-
tions who can help ~and impact
our mission," Suydam said.
"Maybe our clients can partner
with us on a business i.ervice. We
are a charity that runs Like a busi-
ness."
Whatever the cost, paroclpants
can expect a cenam level of serv-
ict' throughout the day and those
involved in planning at the spe-·
cific club are fully aware of this.
