I could not believe my eyes. but there was not a huge line of people waiting to walk aaoss the border lnto the U.S. from Mexico. I thought either that my dmingwas Fishing Tournament is now underway. Ever alnce Sept 11, the Border Patrol had made a show of force for people waik:iog across the border wtlb metal detecton and big aaeenJng. I bed a huge r:n with thil show ol though. because at the same time. there was m1nimal enforcement of boats cruising up the coast or, for that matter, those on buse. who Mre screened lea. Recently I was cruising back into the U.S. from Mexican waters; and for the flnt time. I was actually followed by a Bonier Patrol RIB boat once J was Inside thebalbor. lt wu easy to see I was cruising beck from an intematlooal voyage, as I WU the only veaeJ app.road>lng from the IOuth, and I still bad my courtesy Mexlcan Oag hoisted. The ef6dency c.ouJd be dramadcaOy improved. At least it Js a start on their behalf toward watching the ocean border closer. but let's make the check realistic and dlideot 1 have an idea: I wiO extend an lnvitation for a Border Patrol agent to ride with me on my next cruise, and I can show firsthand how to improve the cunent system. I mention the border, because last week. I told you bow the hurricane season ls lo effect, but many of the boaters in Newport Harbor will bead eouth to Bnsenada for a vacation. Plus. the fishing ls great south of the border. 80 many flshing boats are be.adiog south for the good bite. Remember, whether you touch foreign soil or not. once you cross the lntemadonal border, you must check ln with customs on your return. Speaking of ftsblng! Davey'a Locler'11eCOnd annual Kid'S Summer The tournament runs for the months of June, July and August and ls open to aU kids 15 years old and younger. The best pan ls that It ls free to enter. The btggest piece or news was that his wife had her knee replaced four months ago. The operation It.self went very weJI. but the aftermath was tenible. She developed one compllcarion after another and was laid up stlU. This all happened a year after she roUerbloded Into a parking meter and blew her elbow to smlthereens. Not so good. I've known Sam and Allee for 12 years, and I'd often heard her jokingly complain about the fact that he could lie there all day long when ~he was sick. and Sam would never even notice. I always took th1s to be something or an overstatement. exaggerated for comic effect. Maybe not. But since I do know htm weU. I decided to risk IL r venrured. "Thing Is, I'd much rather be left alone when I'm not feeling weu.· "I believe you,• I said. "But that's not what she wants.• "So whatever happened to the good old Golden Rule?" joked Sam. Good question. The Golden Rule says, "Do unto others u you want others to do unto you.· In actual practke, this means thar Sam Is golng to treat his wlfe the way that he wants to be treated. ln thls ln tance. It means that since Sam likes to be left alone when he I n't feeling well, he's gonna leave Alice alone, too. Right? Work.able? Apparently no1. At the rlsJt o( committing heresy. I don't think the Golden Rule quite does It. It's not that It Isn't a valuable principle LO live by. Certainly it is. but f see It more as a statement of good lntentJon:. than an actual rule that prescribes behavior. We alJ want to be lreated kindly, lovingly and with conslderatJon. By fat. the majority of us would say that ourtntenlion ls to trea1 others thls same way. But if we behave toward others in the way that reels right to us. that doesn't necessarily mean that it'U work for them. Case In point above. I think there's a better way to go. ll's the Platinum Rule: ~Do unto others the way ·rnn want to be done unto.· This is about differences and honoring and respeding the other person's right to have preferences that do not line up with yows. It's about behaving In ways that the other person con iders loving and kind. This comes up all the time when I counsel couples and families. It seems that we want to treat others In the ways that feel good to us. lo spite of the fact that they tell us loudly and repeatedly that that is not what they want This ia problematic In so many ways but none more so than when we are sick. Illness makes us (eel more needy and vulnerable than usual. and we are less able to fend for ourselves. So It is moll! threatening and hurtful when we are not responded to In the way that feels best to us. And so lt Is with Sam and Alice. When Allee Is sJck. she feels cared about and cared for when Sam caters to her. When Sam is sick. he feels cared about and cared for when Alice leaves him alone. If he wants anything, he'U ask. Very different but very reaJ for each of them. If we apply the Golden Rule here. Sam will Ignore her and Alice will feel hun, neglected and abandoned. And Alice will tend him to death and Sam will feel suffocated and engulfed. If we apply the Platinum RuJe, Sam wlD remember to ask Alice how she feels and if he can do anythlng to make her more comfortable. Alice will mate a concerted effort to leave Sam alone unless he asks for help. After all, platinum is more expens.ive than gold. and lt'U get you a whole lot farther In yow relationships. So treat others the way they want, and both of you will get more of what you want. CITY Of NEWPORT BEACH Newport Beach City Hall. 3300 Newport Blvd., Newport Beadl. There is, however, a dllierence in atmosphere and character analysis. Dark images and dismal illustrallons show the transition of Harry from his childhood to his teen years and how be pen:eives his life to be changing. He becomes more aware of the evil surrounding his existence and therefore becomes more involved than he has been. With thJs in mind, it is no swprise that his relationships with others are deeper and more personally based, which makes the movie all the more inttiguing.
