EDITORIALS · · UCI controver~Y . . may c~ for a more uriif orm solution A t UCl this week, the debate about free speech and the 1st Amendment raged as-some 30 graduating Muslim s~dents decided last week to add a stole to tbelr caps and gbwns that bore the shahada, words that they say are a testament to, and symbol of, their Islamic faith. =rt was the same stole that graduating students wore last year, and the Muslim Student Union saJd the choice of cfothing will become traditional at future graduations. But we have to wonder lf It is nf>t time for the university to change the rules on what Is appropriate graduation clothing and avoid further clashes of cultures down the road. tn the recent case, pro-Israeli organizations, along with several Newport-Mesa residents and even the Orange County chapter of the Anti-Defamation League, loudly spoke against the stoles bearing the shahada because of its apparent alignment w1th terrorist groups. Muslim , however, say it's no different than Olrlstlans wearing a cruclfax or Jews a yarmulke. UCI Olancellor Ralph Cicerone issued a statement, quickly after the debate went to a national level, siding with free speech. "UCI is a public university with people from diverse backgrounds who enjoy the rights and protection of the 1st Amendment," he said In a letter to faculty, students and staff. "Our history includes the free and peaceful expression of political and nonpolitical Ideas, no matter how controvemial." Cicerone made the right decision to not get caught up In the media frenzy and make a rash decision to disallow the stoles. He was a1so right in choosJng to side with the 1st Amendment. Cicerone's letter, however, could mean that someone who wanted to paint a swastika on his or her gown or wear a .Ku J()ux J()an hood, would be protected by the same J s t Amendment. Thus UCJ, would be forced to allow it. As we see It, the easiest way to avoid such controversiesis to ma.Jee the graduating uniform what it is -a uniform. Don the cap, wear the gown and end it there. It might not allow the creative student in the architecture program to turn his cap into a skyscraper, but it will ensure that graduation stays off "The O'Reilly Factor" and restore the real pomp and circumstance the graduates deserve. After years of grief, technology provides one family a glim.mer of hope F or nearly 16 years, Kent Gibbons had been left wondering. Wondering who killed his young, pregnant wife and why? Approximately 6,000 students were awarded degrees -the largest graduating class in the history of the university. Hundreds of partlctpating students chose to adorn their commencement robes with festive regalla. Included in this colorful display were braJded , cords. medallions, tiaras. baJJoons. feathered boas, serapes, U.S. Marine Corps sashes, fraternity and sorority letters, an lmage of the Lady of Guadalupe, and flowers -thousands of flowers -most of them fragrant leis. As reported widely lo the media, about 30 students (0.5% of the graduates), who are members of the Muslim Student Union, wore green stoles. Each stole bore Arabic cript on one side that read, ·There Is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger,• and on the other side read •God, Increase my knowledge.· The students stated that the stoles were an expression or faith and a call for unity and that similar stoles had been worn last year without lncidenL Due to ll banage or media attention nnd rnislnformatlon, these green stoles with white Arabic script brought nadonal attention to the UCI campus. The reaction or some was that these stoles with their Arabic calligraphy represented something so vile that the university was obligated to either ban them from the ceremony or, at minimum, to issue a statement denouncing them as hateful. They suggested that the script contained subtext or could be interpreted to suggest a linkage to the terrorist group Hamas. Others went so far as 10 label UCJ'a commencement as •graduation jihad· and the sroles as "suicide sashes.• After careful review and consJderable consultation, OlanceUor Ralph Cicerone in a Jetter 10 faculty, atudents, and staff made it clear lhar UCJ •js a public university with people from diverse backgrounds who enjoy the rights and protection of the lat Amendment. Our history Includes the free expression of polJtlcaJ and nonpolitical Ideas. no matter how controversial.· These rights are regarded as vital to the university. They are a hallmark and strength of all great educational institutions. And while at times some may . perceive these rights as tested -even abused -they are rights our Constitutional fathers meant to be broad and lenient. indeed, It has often been said that the I at Amendment ls Intended to protect the least popular of thoughts, not the most popular. Many dismissed the contro_yersy that played out at UCI as a ~tempest In a teapot.· They said it was a war of words or, perhaps, a contentious clash of semiotics. I would suggest that this Issue is sympto matic of a larger enJgma. The Israeli-Palestinian controversy, and how It has been portrayed in the media, has polarized people to such an extent that the embroidered script on a graduation tole can serve as a lightning rod for controversy. When misunderstandings reach lhls level, It ts time to step back and ta.Ice a dt:ep breath. Yes. It Is often extremely difOcult to respect different opinions. or to realize they may contain a measure of truth. But the ability to listen to often-unpalatable opinions is the cornerstone of a democratic society. lf we are to go beyond the current standoff (whether in the Middie East or at UCI). people on both ides of this controversy need to abolish two things from their seemingly entrenched positions; that they alone understand the problem and that the other side is dead wrong. • RANDY LEWIS serve1 at executive associ1te dean of lludents •t UCI.
