Badt In the early days, bod)'5wfing was the water sport of choice, and o ne of the pmrder lpOta was the Balboa pier. The waves were so good then that on a big day, If you took off and looked to your right, you would see water running down the sudace of the pier. Look straight ahead, and you had a good view or the Pavilion. When ' they dredged the harbor, however, they had to put ;ill that sand som e place. ]hey dumped it all along the peninsula and ln the process destroyed the Balboa pier for surfing. Nothing was left but a shore break. However, the same sand that ruined the pier for surfing created another surf spot. Before the dredging at what we call The Wedge. a rock groin ran at right angles to the west jetty. making it lmposslbl~ to surf there. Waves coming along the jetty smashed into the groin. Anybody trying to surf would have been killed. However, they dumped enough sand there that the groin was covered and The Wedge, known u the Point in those days, wa<; born. To quote a lint' by William Shakespeare: "I come lo bury Caesar. not lo praii.e him." Oo we now live in a lawless society? I am wondering what ever happened to that law we onre called statutory rape? Did we now abolish it? Parents. lock up your toddlers. They are now prey 10 sexual preda1ors as long as they comply. To me. this trial of Greg I faidl, Kyle Nachreiner and Kei1h Spann on charges of rape and sexual assault should have been a very dear-cut, open-and-shut case. Al the very leas1, the statutory rape law was transgressed more than o nce by these defendants who·are now free on bail. I can1101 believe what I have read i11 the paper, of an unbelievable jury decision. Three rapists against one sorrowful, misguided, underage waif. Whether Jane Ooe was unconscious or nol, had a date-mpe drug or nol. gave conscrll or not, had sex with all three the night before or not, she W<L'i clearly a victim of a horrible crime, and statutory rape is just the tip of the iceberg. II is so sad that the weaJc. the feeble, tht• · .... infim1ed, those who act v-.istly different from ow society's rank and file are subject to being preyed upon .. What about the parents of the boys? Where were they when moraJs were supposed 10 be taught to children? Whether a parent is a deputy sheriff or a tr.ish collector, an attorney or a hus driver, should the responsibility of imparting a sense of decency 10 your kids be shirked? Did you think tJ1at someone else would do this very significant part of parenting for you? OUJdren learn by example. Whal kind of examples were you demons1m1inK 10 your children?
