Allcla Robinson Daily Pilot NEWPORT-MESA -The local hospi- tality industry is reporting healthy gains so far this summer despite tourism offi- cials' concerns earlier this year about competition from new resorts and at- tractions to the north and south. Hotel-occupancy rates for Newport Reach rose 11 .::!% between January and May, according lo l'KF Consulting. An- ecdotal evidencl' su~t'SI~ June has also been strong for area hotel~. and officials expect tourist-serving husin~)><'S to stay busy through the rau. "I feel safe saying that wt''re seeing al least a 4% incrca~c:" Newport Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau Exec..·u- tive Oirector Marla I layden said of hotel occupancy compared with last sum- mer's numbers. "It looks like a boom. landl that we're going to have a really good summer." The hoom fmm Fourth of July lire· works drew crowds to the area, with Newport Dunes reporting 100% occ11· pam-y of its campsites and cottage~ and al least 11,000 people on the prope rt y to see the fireworks display. "We had a very good showing." New- port Dunes Gener.ii Manager Andn•w Tlwodorou said. "I think it's very do~l' lo previous years." The day's champion wa)> an exaspernted 460-pound Yorkshire sow, Iris. who at I: IS p.m. Sunday began farrowing 14 fuzzy piglets a day before she w.is due. Nearly 100 onloo~ers cheered her on as she pushed and pushed ... and pushed, all while a pen fuU of wide-eyed, curly-tailed grunters fought for suckling space. Oarrytl Ruffolo, 25, and Sean Terheggen. 14, stood in the pen all day with Iris, assisted with the delivery and cleaned each soiled piglet Ruffolo said he'd done this several times before as a leacher with Mission Viejo's Future Farmers of America. Bui Sean never imagined he'd be clean.ing newborns before showing up for the day's volunteer work in the fair's liveslock corral. "I've never do ne this before," he said. "Bui the experience was awesome." GENERAL PLAN AMENDMENT The commission will consider a reques1 fo r a general plan amendmen1 and remning properties at 1695 Superior Ave. and 635 W. 17th St. from Julio Gener . of Studio 3 Architects, . re.presenting property owner Eugene Stirbu. Gener is also requesting an adjustment to combine the side-by-side properties in10 one, which would house an expanded Growers Direct. The site's area totals about one acre. 'Ille Superior Avenue property fo m1erly included a gas s1ation, and the 17th Slrcet property formerly housed Keegan's Con crete. Stirbu wants to change the w ning of the properties from general industrial/limited commercial to business. The proposed development of the property is a general retail use -relocating and expanding Growers Oirect to this location. WHAT TO EXPECT The outlook for the changes looks good . because City Council members have already deemed the project an opportunity to revitalize the southwest corner of West 17th Street and Superior Avenue. Council members also support Stirbu's goal of relocating and expanding Growers Direct. But the commission could also continue this item to expand any changes to the general plan to include adjacent industrial parcels. CENTER EXPANSIONS 'The commission will consider a request from Moharrimad Ghiassi, representing the Islamic Educational Center of Orange County. to expand the group's facility by enlarging an existing worship area by about 2,900 square feet within an industrial complex at 3194 Airport Loop Orivc. A previous proposal to add a private elementary school and administrative offices in an 8,000-square-foot space next to the proposed area has been withdrawn. WHAT TO EXPECT Approval is likely because services will be held only when most of the other businesses in 1he complex arc closed. PACIFIC MEDICAL PLAZA . The commission will hold a public hcarinK. with no vote expected, on a draft environmental report for the proposed Pacific Medical Pla7.a. A draft report is the .first environmental reporl issued for a project.
