The 38-year-old strolled these grounds many times as a junior sailor and successfully navigated through the first day a., general chairman of the 38th Governor's Cup Challenge, an annual junior-match race championship hosted by Balboa Yacht Oub that enters its final two days beginning today. Scandone appreciated the competitive sailing of two boats battling one another in the water in an event he raced in 20 years ago. Maybe it's because he is in a battle of his own. againsl a disease with no cure. Scandonc was diagnosed with ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, two years ago. He originally went 10 a chiropractor because of back pain. "Disbelief more than anything," said Scandone when asked about his initial · reaction to learning he had the disease, which attacks both uppl'r and lower motor neurons and causes degeneration in the brain and spin'41 cord. "I thought something had to be wrong." A chiropractor referred Scandonc to a neurologist who performed several tests that later cevealed the disease's prcSt'nce. Scandone went for a second opinion. I fe got the same answer. "More disbelief," Scando m· said. Scandone has lost about 10 poundl'> in the two years sinre and walks with the help of a cane and orthotic braces wrapped around his ankle-;. • Instead of hal'>kethall and l'>Urfing, he has taken up fishing and continues to golf. And, he still sails.
