are clamoring to rent them
for summer stays.
Work began in March on
the $12-million project that
will restore roughly half of
the park's 46 collages hack to
the way they looked in their
heyday. whid1 lasted from
about 1920 to I ~JSO. The
projet:t. which is i.cheduled
to fin ish in spring 2005 wilh
the first collage rentals pro·
jected for next summer, will
include the creation of a visi-
tors center, a cultural center
and a pede,strian bridge over
Los Ttancos Creek.
Though no reservation
-.ystem for the rnllagei. has
been set up yet, former Crys-
tal Cove resident Laura Dav-
ick said her phone's been
ringing off the hook. Davick
is president of the Crystal
Cove Alliance, a nonprofit
group that has rai-;ed more
than $500.000 toward his-
toric preservati on of the
beachfront community.

beach can be a breeze

coolers, pails, shovels,
beach chails and more? Don't
forget to slip in that handy
paperback of fun summer
reading.
In fact, they are ,called "beach
books" or "beach reads" in the
proressio~ because they are
lightweight, summer fare that

surviving business in Costa
Mesa.

"This is the historical preser-
vation parallel to the extreme
makeover," Cryslal Cove State
Park Supt. Ken Kramer said.
Some of the cottages along
the bluff top are as much as 80%
restored and soon it will be time
for the fun part: paint. One col·
tage that hasn't been stripped
outside is turquoise, and it will
return 10 1ha1 color after the res-
toration, Kramer said.
"The first 90% of each collage
is rough and painstaking." he
said. "It's that last 10% that really
becomes eye-popping."
TIME MARCHES ON
Although a group of fonner
cottage residents lost a court
battle against eviction, some
have applauded the state's resto-
ration plans.
"I'm down [at the cove! just
about every weekend." said
Stella Hiatt, who started camp-
ing on the beach al Crystal Cove
in the 1950s and for about 23
years spent pan of each year in a
cottage there. "I think they're
doing a great job."
Hian now lives in Palos Ver·
des, but she still keeps in touch
with her old neighbors and, at
80, regularly visits the cove for a
routine swim to a buoy about
125 yards offshore.
She's happy to see the area put
to educational and recreational
use for the public. Hiatt admits
that as a pan-time resident of
the cove she was lucky to have
another place to go, an advan-
tage about half of those who
were evicted didn't have.

LOOKING TOWARD THE
FUTURE
With the first phase of the res-
toration well underway. Davick
is already planning for phase
two, which will fix up the re-
mainder of the cottages. In Sep·
tember. the Cryslal Cove Alli-
ance will launch a S9.2-rnillion
fund.raising campaign for the
second phase of the project. but
no one is sure yet how long it
will take or how much it will
cost.
By next summer the pad will
have its first cultural center with
educational exhibits and a ma-
rine research center. and 13 of
the conages now being restored
could be ready to rent. Three
will be hostel-style with ex·
pected rental fees at $20 to S30 a
bed, and the individual cabins
will liltely COSI $80 to s 150 a
night. Based on demand for
camping at other parks. officials
expect them 10 seU out within
minutes.
While Hiatt is looking forward
to her former home being open
to everyone. she doesn't plan to
stay in the cottages when they
become available.
"I had it for many years. I'm
willing to let it go: she said.
"That beach belongs to the peo-
ple."

The <;ound from Robideau's dress
was made from the rolled up
chewing tobacco lids that are tied to
it . I falc said, giving some background
into the hows and whys of the dress
and the dance.

work so she could catch the show. "I
think they should be supported. It
was great. I think they should do this
three times a day."
Near the end of the performance, ·
I !ale invited audience members lo
come onto the stage for the ·Round
Dance" with the performers.
Irvine residents I.aura Elbaum and
her friend Holly Vickery, both 9,
danced in the sociaJ while I .aura's
father. Rich. watched from the
audience.
"I thought ii was terrific," he said.
"I enjoyed seeing lots of different
cultures represented."
In all, eight tribes from the United
States and Canada were represented
in the lineages of the dancers on
stage. including Navajo, (South)
Dakota Sioux, Chippewa. Southern
Cheyenne, Chumash, Kickapoo.
Apache and Paiute.
The center's dancers perform more
than 20 times a year at various events
around Southern California.
including the center's annual
powwow, which this year is at the
Orange County Fairgrounds from
Aug. 27 to 29.
MWe do a lot of these performances
at schools. community organizations,
fairs -anywhere we can.go to
educate people about a little part of
the Indian culture.~ Hale said.

The guy driving a car sporting a
"Disabled" sign in the front window
decided to beat me lo lhe punch and
cur me off wilh a righr tum as two cars
tr.tveling west wenl through lhe red
lighl. Disabled. indeed! What's the rush?
In the chiropractor's office, we
chatted aboul lhe Tuur de France,
especially lhe respect chat lhe alhJetes
show toward one anolher as lhey travel
at high speed up and down lhe country
roads of France. Stan hil lhe nail on the

My return walk included more drivers

other as one slowed down to negotiate a

Costa Mesa Cily Council members, we

Thank goodness for lhe ocher side of
lhe coin. Three Costa Mesa drivers
waited to let me cross the slreet before
going through lhe intersection. These
three are considerate of us pedeslrians
and know chat slowing down.is "lhe
only way to Dy."
Going slow is good for the heart and
good for lhe souJ. Smell the roses and
look at spider webs. On Royal Palm
Drive. I marveled at lhe sun's glow on
a single strand of spider webbing that
spanned the 35 paces (of a size-ft
shoe) between a hedge and a nearby
tree. Let's take note of that liltJe
arachnid taking time. nice and slow, 10

The final leg of my trip was east on
fair Drive, where I spotted some green
cardboard packaging tossed into the

When I began writing this
column some four years ago and
attempted to defend some or
our news dedalons. a local
resident of tome note pve me
some advice. *Quit apologlzing, •
he aaid.
He was right. I'm not going to
apologitt for our I laidl coverage -
either.
To be fair, I had a number of
readers tell me that they thought
our coverage wa'> just fin e.
But that doesn't mean that we
shouldn't be introspective and
more careful the next time
around. And unfortunately. as
we've seen, there wiU definitely
be a next time around, where
young Greg Haldi Is concerned.
So that's the main message I
want the readers to take away
' from th.ls.
We do not try to appeal to
prurient Interests just to seU
newspapers. In fact, journalists
really have nothing to do with
the sale or the newspaper. And
we do consider how we would
feel if ii were us. We have
lengthy dlSCU11lon1 and debates
about news coverage every day.
Newspapers and the people
who write and edJt them are
constantly aearchinl for ways 10
better tell the 1toriet.

The Daily Pilot conducted interviews
with Costa Mesa coadles, administration.
as well as district and city officials shortly
after the school announced the
resignation of its boys athletic director,
Dave Perkins, on July 1. Sinoe then, Costa
Mesa fired Perkins as its football coach,
the Daily Pilot learned Friday night, forcing
us to make 11th-hour wholesale changes.
This series entails why there has been
chaos at Costa Mesa during the past four
months. Bob Serven, who is now an
assistant with the Mater Dei boys
basketball team, said he resigned, in part,
because of the lac:t of summer pay for
coadles and his frustrations with the
joint-use agreement for fields.
In January, Per1cins was told to resign as
athletic director because he was so
adamantly against the joint-use
agreement and because he took exception
to the payment process to coadles, he
said.
The following three-part series will
analyze the joint-use agreement and the
summer pay for coaches, along with
today's introductory story.
