JUNE Well. it's true that two CASAGRANDE plants closing would reduce jobs. hut lffe sentence Is wrong In Its U!le of the word "which." ''Which" should only be used for tJ1ings callell nonessential clau .... cs. And if that ~ounds annoyingly grammar-like, not 10 worry. You can sldp the academic a pproach on this one and instead just apply one of rwo simple tests IO know whether to use "which" or "that." Nonnally. a comma should come before "which." but not before "chat." That's because "which" should introduce only stuff that could be lifted out of a senlence without changjng the sentence's maJn meaning. "The layoffs, which affected more than 100 people, were designed to improve the company's ratio of operating expenses to income: You could surgically remove the stuff hetween the rommas and still retain the main point of I.he sentence: that the layoffs weft' 10 Improve the bonom line. ~11 was U1ese layoffs that triggered workers' subconscious resentment" See. If you were to nix the "that" aml everything after ii in the second example. you would be nixing the whole point of the sentence right along with it. Here's an even simpler pair of examples of the correct use of "that" and "which": "The car. which I was driving, Is red," and, "There is the car that I was driving."
