NEWPORT BEACH -Police are looking
for the person who shot a 17-year-old boy
in the face with a pellet gun on Friday as
ha rode his bicycle near Oitf Drive Park.
The Costa Mesa resident was riding his
bicycle east on Riverside Drive near Oiff
Drive at about 5 p.m. when someone fired
shots at him. police said. One of the metal
pellets lodged in his cheek and was later
removed at Hoag Hospital, Newport
Beach Sgt. Steve Shulman said.

have no descriptiorr of the shooter or

The pellet removed from the boy's
cheej,.was a lead, hourglass-shaped pellet
that would have come from a pellet gun
that uses an air pump or carbon dioxide
cartridge to fire the projectiles, Shulman
said.
It was not the type of pellet fired by air·
soft guns. The City Council in May voted
to ban the firing of airsoft guns. which
greatly ,resemble real guns.
Pellet guns were already illegal.
"It's 1'eplorable conduct," Councilman
Steve Bromberg said of the shooting.
"When something like that hits clMe to
home, we take notice. It's not something
we're used to seeing in our city.

Coastal plan not good for
a great small-boat harbor
I do not support the Newport
Beach coastal plan as written because
It has not solved the lower bay
dredging moratorium to foster the
growth of eel grass.
All one has to do is cruise the lower
bay at low tide and see the increasing
number of docks that are on dry land,
rendering them unusable. One of the
greatest small-boat harbors in the
United States is slowly being
destroyed. and the city of Newport
Beach has taken no action to correct
the situation. ln fact, the Newport
Beach local coastal plan endorses the
destruction of our wonderful boating
harbor through its eelgrass policy.

churchgoers have been able to park
in the 101 belonging to the school as
well as their own lot. lf they would
allow the church to proceed, there
would be even less parlc:ing In the
neighborhood, because they are
trying to correct the problems at
issue with the community.

Skiing the last frontier

M y fri~nd Sue Jeffries,
whom I met at St.
Andrew's Church,
invited me to go to
Alaska with the Balboa Ski and
Sport Qub.
We were going to stay at the
Alyeska Prince Hotel for four
nights, including lift tickets for
siding. and three nights at Hotel
Captain Cook in Anchorage to
see the ldltarod Trail Sled Dog
Race -all for $999. This
seemed like an exceUent
bargain and place to meet new
people who want to oove fun.
However. Sue, a member of
the club since 1968, became
very iJ1 and couldn't attend. so I
ended up going with 35 people I
didn't know.
We new into (Ted Stevens!
Anchorage Internacional Airport
and took a 45·minute ride on
the "Magic Bus .. to the Alyeska
Resort and Alyesk.a Prince Hotel.
This year, it was very warm, se-it
was raining at the bottom, but
there was a blizzard at the top
of the mountain. That excited
all of us.
We all checked into our
rooms and then rode the shuttle

Due to the blizzard, I decided
not to ski the next day. ~stead,
several of us· wandered into the
small town and visited the jade
shop with an of its handmade
goodies. That night, those who
skied said it was like skiing on
ice marbles and that it was
impossible to get an edge.
The next day. the blizzard
continued, so a group of us
decided to take a tour to Seward
with Major Marine Tours, and
we took a boat caUed the View
Finder to see Portage Lake and
Portage Glacier. Along the way.
we counted all the sea lions in
the coves to keep track of their
migration patterns. The weather
was unusually beautiful, with
sunny skies and a nke, cool
breeze. We saw an abundance
of sea life, including rafting sea
o tters, bald eagles, sea lions and
their babies and many birds.
Afterward, we visited Begich,
Boggs Visitor Center and some
gift shops with locally made
handcrafts. Because the weather
was so beautiful, I decided to ski
the next day, and I took the
Alyesk..a tramway right from the
lobby of the Alyesk..a Prince

all very exciting to meet the
racers, and I was able to get my
picture talcen with previous
winner Martin Buser.
There are good reasons for
the ceremonial start oo Fourth
Avenue. most of them Included
in the race's nearly $600,000
purse. Joe Redington Sr.
founded the lditarod 1hill
Seppala Memorial Race tn 1967
and posted top-IO finishes up
until age 72.
This was the 31st annual race,
covering 1,200 miles, and we all
thoroughly enjoyed watching
the excitement. Due to my
adventuring out alone, I met a
wonderful, kind man. Bruce
Elerding and I have been dating
every day for the past I 6
months, which ls another
excellent adventure in itself.
