"Earlier, we used to have an extra hour
of math after achoo! for students who
need the help," he said. "Now we have in-
corporated that time within school hours.
These classes should help students ce·
ment the concepts they learned in dasa."

South Coast Music Together

Once the music got going, most of
the children made their way back to
their parents' laps in a circle on the
Ooor. Walehwa and the parenta sang
a welcome song, mentioning each
child by name.
Some toddlers, like 21 -month-oJd
Benjamin Alkinson, still found the
sprinklers watering the playground
outskle too enticing to miss. They
watched Intently for a few moments
before running over and joining the
circle.
And nobody minds.
Otlldren up to 4 years old get to
bang, jingle, clap, saeech and sing all
they want in the interactive music

Mariners Library. But sometimes
even the joy of music isn't quite
enough to keep toddlers entertained.
On the other hand. KayUn Serpa.
nearly 2, was more than content to
snuggle into her daddy ICeith Serpa's
lap. She amlled contentedly as he
sang along to "Where is the
Beehive?" and pantomimed a
buzzing hive with his hands.
"This is how it goes," teacher Julie
Walehwa said as two of her students
ran around the room. curiously
-investigating every nook and cranny.
"That's how they are at this age." Then Walehwa brought out the big

selecting their favorites or, in some
cases, two. A chaotic but happy din
of ahak1ng. ringing and pounding
ensued.
The pounding ls a good way for
children to learn to be musical early
in life, Keith Serpa. a rmaskian, said.
· "Most adults don't ever get to learn
how to follow a melody or a rhythm."

adventure, Bwh was a late
bloomer when It came to
mountaineering. A retired
corporate lawyer. Burke started
experimenting with trail walks in
Hong Kbng, wherl be went on an
uaignment to Asia in 1996. He

councries for his business, but
his passion for climbing grew
when he participated lo a
100-ki.lometer trail walk and
mountain race in Hof18 ICong.
Burte twice climbed Mount
Fuji -Japan's tallest peak at
12,389 feet
But he doesn't regret slarting
out late.
"That's the thing about
mountaineering." Burke said.
·Age doesn't really matter. I was
60 when I climbed McKinley, 61
when I climbed Aconcagua. And
I'll be 62 when I climb
Kilimanjaro.·
With those three mountains.
Burte will have climbed three of
the seven highest summits in the

doesn't share her husband's
passion for mountaineering.

way to North Dakota to his
grandfather's grave.

course to guide students toward

rowitz. director of secondary
curriculum and instruction for
the school district.
·These courses are intended 10
guide students toward college
and, more importantly, give
them academic support." he
said.
Estancia will have a new Earth
Science class that will hopefully
help boost the students' test
scores, Antal said.

there now will remain; the hotel's
restawant and bar will be open
to the pubUc; and three paths
will be aeated from the street to
the beach.
The concrete walk along the
beach will be reconfigured to
give it a more romantic feel, and
the hedges will be taken out to
offer more view and to let people
walk straight down to the beach,
Sutherland said. All the grounds
of the hotel will be open to the
public.
The hotel will also be acces-
sible to the public by boat. with
guest docks for those visiting the
hotel for a few hours. The area
on the nearby beach, where the
cicy offers sailing lessons for kids,
will also remain.

Whoever they are. I try
to establish a journaling
relationship, build up
their confidence and give

grammar or style. They
simply get to experience
the power of the pen.
