Even as he sits on a chair in the
livtng room of his Costa Mesa home,
the aroma of roasting tomatoes wafts
in the air.
"They're home-grown tomatoes," the
35-year-old said.
He leaves them cooking in the oven for
about 10 hours to make his own "sun-dried
tomatoes."
But barely 10 months ago, Kensey couldn't
gather the energy to get off the couch and
clean up after a meal
Reeling under the side effects of
chemotherapy, Kemey wondered why be had
to be one of the 1,200 men in the country
each year to be struck with breast cane.er.
Today, he feela strong enough -physically
and emotionally-to sign up for the Susan
Komen Foundation Race for the Cure.
scheduled to take place in Fashion Island on
Sept 26.
Kensey was diagnosed with stage-two
breast cancer on Oct. 1, 2003 -the first day
of National Brea.st Cancer Awareness Month.
He was in the shower the first time he
realized something was not right .
"I was reaching over to pick up something,
and I felt this lump under my left nipple," he
said.
Hls father encouraged him to have it
checked out right away. Kensey had a
marnqiogram.
"I mean, this ls something women ln their
40s and 50s go through,'' he said. "It was a
strange experience."
Al he lay on the examining table, the
doctor walked ln and told him point-blank:
"You have cancer."
"I was speechless." Kensey said. "I asked
him bow sure he was. And be gave me a
th~up and said '909(..'"

around tiny Rabbit Island, off the
coast of British Columbia. they
could've sworn they owned the place.
Technically, it wasn't that far from the
truth.
Frum July 4 to 9, 14 OCC photographers
spent six days blanketing the school's own
36-acre private island, donated a year ago
by yachtsman Henry WheeJer. The students
explored the ins and outs of Rabbit Island's
rugged terrain, coves, conifers and wildlife
and took advantage of the 18 hours of
sunlight each day, instructor Blad~ 9iffissen
said. They even went on salmon-!Jshing
trips and explored larger neaJ'by islands..
007.ens of the students' best shots will be
on display to the public on both Ooors of
the college's arts center through Sept. 30.
The exhibition will help promote Rabbit
Island and to find donors to help maintain
ii, Gillissen said.
Wheeler, Gillissen and the students will
also be on hand for a reception from 5 to 8
p.m. on Sept. 16.
Gillissen said his students got free rein to
capture whatever images they wanted,
whenever they wan1ed. Some shot all night

fkials are launching a plan to re-
align offshore moorings in the
harbor, a move harl>or users are
hoplng won't rock too many
boats..
The more than 700 offshore
boat moorings were orig!nally
set down according to lines
drawn by the U.S. Anny Corps of
Engineers around 1940, but over
the years the moorings have
shifted because of weather pat·
terns. tidal action and mainte-
nance activities. The city's har-
bor resources department has
started preliminary work on a
project designed to get the
moorings back Ln their desig-
rtated boundaries.
This is the first time since the
harbor was designed In 1936
that officials have reevaluated rpe location of offshore moor-
mgi,, said Harl>or Resources Su·
pervisor Ouis Miller. The need
tp move the moorings came to
Ught in October, when the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers re-
f\J5ed to dredge part of the har-
bor until a number of boats that
were moored outside their de-
marcation lines were moved.
"This harbor really hasn't
been dredged properly since its
inception, so there hasn't really
tieen a need to look closely at
i~." Miller saJd. "The whole lower
and upper bay needs to be
dredged eventually, so we
tfiought It'd be a good idea to get
everything squared away for this
dredging project."
The mooring project will
likety Include getting the boat
moorings back within the
proper lines as weU as reorgan-
izing moorings to more effi-
ciently use harbor space, which
is at a premium.
"You wouldn't want a 6(>-foot
boat right next to a 30-foot boat,
because then you don't have an
even row," Miller said. "Some
people will have to be relocated.
but we're really going to try and
do our best to keep everybody in
the same general vicinity where
they were."
Mooring permits are issued by
the city and aren't supposed to
be sold by permit holders, so
people generally anach them to
the sale of a boat. There's about
a 30-year wa.iung list for per-
mits, which can command from
$20,000 to $40,000 depending
on their size and location, Miller
said.
The Orange County Sheriff's
Harbor Patrol is working with
the city on the proposed re-
arrangement of moorings. The
project will improve safety for
boaters in the harbor. Harbor
Patrol Lt. Erin Giudice said.
"There are some areas that are
hard Jo access for us.," she said.
"Things are not like they are on
the charts, and I guess when
you're boating. you're expecting
things to be as the map or the
chart says.·
Some who use the harbor,
however, are questioning the
project's benefits.
"It's not as simple as just re·
aligning moorings and boats.·
said Carter Ford. vice president
of the Newport Mooring Assn.,
which represents several hun-
dred offshore mooring permit
holders. "It's a matter of how the
harbor worts and how it meets
the needs of aU these many dif·
ferent consdtuencies. •
Ford is concerned that mov-
Lng the boats could widen some
harbor channels but narrow
others; which he said won't nec-
essarily be safer.
"The jury's still out, because
we don't have a lot of informa-
tion yet," said Mark Sites. who is
on the mooring association's
board and has lived on his boat
in the harbor for 28 years. "I
think most people want 10 make
sure their moorings are in
roughly the ~e location."
Boaters aJso are concerned
that the annual fees charged for
mooring permits could increase
because of the reshuIDing. Sites
said. The Last official increase in
permit costs W"clS ahout six years
ago. but the city has since
changed the fee structure and
JUSt recently allowed permit
holders a final chance 10 enlarge
their mooring size -which in-
creases the coM -before the
boundaries arc moved, he said.
A consultant looking at the
moonngs might teU the city
they're undervalued and ~uggest
increasing the fees. Sites said.
The mooring !>tudy is in its be·
ginning stages. The City Council
approved $106,000 for the
project in the 2004-05 budget.
but hiring an engineer. studying
the boundaries and collecting
public input on possible
changes couJd take as long as a
year, Miller said. While that's go-
ing on, city officials also will
consider overhauJing other har-
bor regulations, such as whether
mooring permit holders should
be required to keep a boat
moored at alJ times.
Ford said it's important to him
that those who use the harbor
are included Ln the process from
the beginning so everyone's
needs can be met.
"I made a decision to move
here 35 years ago because of this
harbor,· he said. "Olange
should be carefully considered.·

St. James secession emotional
AT ISSUE: Do yo u think the Episcopal Diocese of Los
Angeles bishop should have fired St. James church
leaders since St. James broke away from the diocese?
T be question you ask readers about
the bishop firtng the priests brings
to mind the familiar respome in
comedy sketches: You can't fire me, 1
quJt. But that doesn't approximate what
happened with the priests at the
formerly Episcopal churches in the Los
Angeles diocese and ignores what has
been previously explained to your
reporters and written about in your
paper.
That's because the three churches
haven't quit anything as far as Anglican
orthodoxy is concerned. They have
repeatedly said that it is the U.S. synod
-the Episcopal Olurch and its LA
diocese -that has in its official actions
turned its back on Scripture and those
parishioners and clergy who hold to
First Principles. One has to ask the
simple question: Why, if Bishop J. Jon
Bruno believes what he wrote in his
letter to the churches, is he the bishop
of a diocese that says it is Ouistian?
This is the world in which orthodox
Olristians have been living as they
endure a confused leadership in the
Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles; and
why. at the three churches that are now
under the oversight of the Anglican
bishop of Luwero, they now greet
parishioners with a smile and hearty
"Welcome to Uganda -Come, Enter
the Lord'~ House."
And be quite sure, there is no
confusion there. They know the Lord is
Jesus Olrist.

learn some much-needed lessons about
the real meaning of O:uistianity.

clubs instead of inclusive, as the
teachings of the New Testament would
have us be.
The Bible is a document subject to
constantly evolving interpretation. Were
it not, many of us should be stoned to
death for eating shellfish or pork.

meeting, Perhaps a majority vote to
secede would have been the end result,
but then we will never know, will we?
Though unable to attend &ervices for
a few years due to a health issue, my
husband and I worship as Episcopalians
whose Episcopal theology has a proud
history of honoring diversity,
inclusiveness, acceptance of Ouist,
tolerance, respect for all faiths and the
flexibility to coexist with a variety of
biblical interpretations. We supported
Bishop Bnmo's vote, along with 60% of
all bishops, to ordain Bishop Gene
Robinson, and we also value the
inclusive acceptance of homosexuals.
We find it heartbreaking that St.
James cannot find prayerful
reconciliation and remain within the
Episcopal fold. We, however, are not
Anglicans; we are Episcopalians who
have contributed spiritually and
financially for three generations to St.
James. ls it not a dichotomy that the
Daily Pilot's quote of Conner Bishop
Maurice Benitez's Sunday prayer at St.
James was for comfort for those who
feel abandoned by the Episcopal
Olurch?

waterfront properties. and the

made a lot of sense, because the
use of land at that time was for
dumping naval war equipment
The land, however, was deeded
to the city by James Irvine ln
1928 for "public use."
Does "public use" mean an
exclusive private club that only
recently, upon the lease renewal.

Today, as opposed 10 1948, we
have a very differenl situation.
Limited harbor-front acces,, and
a scarcity of open space on the
bay is the reality. The city of
Newport Beach is built out, as
are many urban areas in

only prime land available for
development is the remaining
space set aside and designated
for parts, recreation and public
use. The Marlnapark property is
just that. designated In the
current Newport Beach general
plan for recreation and open
space.
The public would be better
served by a public aquatic
center, park and recreation area
than another high-end
hotel/timeshare catering to a
few wealthy visitors.
In 1997, the State Lands
Commission advised the city of
Newport Beach that Marinapark
is primarily tidelands. The state

Brinson said. ·it's my first role in a
traveling production. I saw 'Rent' once
in high school. and It never really
jumped out at me, but now that I'm in
it, I understand ... the show is
amazing; the way It's written, sets it
apart..
Roeenbaum. who went to college in
Dayton. Ohio, and grew up playing in
punk bands, said what attracted him
most to the role of Roger was the
likeness be bas with the character.
·1 can't think of a character that is
more weD-written and tailored to the
kind of person I am," be said. "I open
the lhow by coming on stage and
playing guitar. and to me it doesn't get
much better than that.·

infamous for the very explicit sex
scene at the end of Vincent's journey
{No one under 18 admitted!). Olloe
Sevigny made a risky career choice,
playing the poor Jost soul who takes
part in this X-rated interlude. This
scene has ha own merits and one
unusual twist, but getting to that
point in the movie Is unbearable.
You'll want to walk out Jong before
the agonizing 90-mlnute prelude has

as Estancia High (l -1) defeated
Magnolia (0-1), 33-26, in a non-
league football matchup Thurs-
day night at Western High. The
victory stopped the Eagles'
seven-game skid dating back to
the fourth game of last year and
extended the Sentinels losing
streak to sh games.
"It was ugty, but we're happy
with a win just fine," Coach
Craig Fertig said of the 3-hour
and 10 minute game marred by
penalties. The two teams com-
bined for 162 yards of penalties,
and the game wu slowed by nu-
merous referN discussions.
The Sentinels opened the
scoring with a 2·yard
run, but the P.agles
blocked the point-af-
ter attempt. The
P.agles took a 7 -6 lead
when Bryce McKen-
dry received a delayed
pitch, broke several
tackles, and raced 7 4
yards for a touchdown
in the first quarter.
