swimmer Aaron Pdnol
brought home the brass from Newport
Beach on Tuesday.
Peirsol, a Newport Harbor High
School graduate and Olympic gold
medalist. was given a brass key to the
city for his athletic achievements.
Mayor Tod Rklpway presented the
key at a City Council meeting.
AJthough there are no specific criteria,
the council rarely gives out the keys,
rudgeway said.
"Newpon Beach, certainJy, was

students."
The swimmer's admfrers Tuesday
included Costa Mesa Mayor Gary
Monahan and one of hls daughters.

Cryptic Web page posts
plenty after phone call
If you searched online for
information on the Newport Beach
city attorney's office, you wouldn't
have found much before Wednesday.
For months, a page for the city
attorney's office on the city's website
was blank except for the sentence,
"We are unabie to confirm or deny
the existence of this page."
That was someone's sense of
humor in the city's management
information systems department,
acting City Atty. Robin OaU80n said.
She thought it was posted when her
office failed to tell management
information systems what it wanted
on the city anorney's page.
'We get pretty busy up here," she
said. ·sometimes it's hard for us to
focus on those thjngs."
After a phone call from the Daily
Pilot, Qauson called management
information systems personnel, and
within minutes the page was
displaying the city attorney's office
goals, functions and e-mail links to
office staff members.

Now that whispers saying Cox was
in the running to be the new CIA
director have been quieted by the
appointment of Rep. Porter Goa
(R-Florida), the political press' rumor
mill is naming Cox as a possible
replacement for Defense Secretary
Donald Rwnsfeld. should he leave
his position if President Bush wins a
second term. ,
An Associated Press story on
Friday listed Cox as well as National
Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice,
NASA head Sean O'ICeefe and Sen.
Sam Nunn (0-Georgia) as
contenders for Rumsfeld's job.
And Cox may have more time oo
his hands after this month, unless he
convinces his colleagues on the
House Homeland Security
Committee Lo support making their
committee permanent.

congressional newspaper, on
Wednesday noted there are several
procedures that could cement the
committee's status, but as Its

At most, I counted 25 (after
those in the audience there to

evening went on. Perhaps
many were watching the events
on television, but even if they
were. they would have missed
what the TV doesn't show -
everything not on camera, not
to mention the sense In the' air.
It's too bad more weren't
there. They missed seeing the
councilmen -I'm running out
of time to use that word -do a
fine job of staying fair and
balanced. All eight applicants
present were asked the same
questions, with a few more
belng asked for obvious
reasons; Councilman John
Heffernan asked Chamber of
Commerce President Rlchard
Luehrs about his abillty to
separate himself from his
business-booster job;
Heff eman asked Daigle about
the need for the council to have
a female member, Councilman
Stew RoMntky asked Gerald
Heger how he would bring a
cost-benefit analysis tactic to
bear on oonfinancial decisions;
Heffernan asked Mlched
Browning about his references:
and several members asked
John Blom about comments he
made about "manslonization"
and property rights.
Heffernan, you might nolfce,
comes up often in the list of
additional questions. Part of
the explanation might be that
when he asked his first
question of the night -a
straight-up "yes or no" of
Charla Grt1Dn about the
planned hotel at Marinapark -
he was told by acting City Atty.
Robln <lamon that he couid
not ask such questions because
it wouid restrict the person's
ability to vote once in office.

as likely as unlikely), I'd suggest '
this to those future applicants:
Watch tapes of this meeting and,
the one during which Rosa.nsky
was appolnted. See how Daigle '
and Rosan.sky addressed the
council. They must have done
something right.

Preparing for a safety pinch
When needed, police
and firefighters can't
be everywhere. A
group of residents is
ready when needed.

Costa Mesa residents Diane
and Paul Hill are prepared for the
worst.
They have CPR training, a grab
bag of important documents
ready to take in an emergency
and two-way radios to commu-
nicate with if the phones go out.
They even have a swimming
pool that can provide a source of
water to douse a fire in a pinch.
And they want others to be
ready for the unexpected, too.
·People t.h.inJc they're prepared
on their own," said 40-year resi-
dent Diane Hill, co-chair of the
Costa Mesa Citizen Corps Volun-
teer Management Team. •But
we're so much safer if we com-
bine with our neighbors.•
The couple went through
training to become part of the
city's Community Emergency
Response Team. In an emer-
gency, the city could activate the
volunteer corps to help out with
the back-to-basics recovery in
their neignborhoods.
The Federal Emergency Man-
agement Agency oversees the
program in cides throughout the
country.
Training in Costa Mesa starts
with neighborhood disaster-pre-
paredness courses, which the
city is offering during the next
couple months. The rwo-session
course covers neighborhood
watch programs. fire safety and
ways to get ready for the unex-
pected.
That basic training will help
people deal with a large-scale di-
sastrr if emergency services are
stretched thin and can't respond
immediately, said Gerald Ver-
wolf, emergency services coordi-
natof for the city.
"We often hear that locaJ gov-
ernment won't be there in the
first 72 hours after a disaster,·
Verwolf said. "We have to be able
to take care of ourselves. There
are ways (residents( can help
themselves. can help their neigh-
bors."
Those ways include having an
evacuation plan, a disas1er kit
and supplies i.uch as drinJcing
water.
Being good neighbors helps
too, Diane Hill said. That could
mean keeping an eye on some-
one's house when they're on va-
cation or checldng to see how
they are doing after an earth-
quake.
"First and foremost, help your-
self (after an emergency)." said
Brenda Emrick. fire protection
specialist for the Costa Mesa Fire
Department. "But then help your
neighborhood and help your
city."

in the Citizens' Fire Academy.

"These classes help the citi-
zens or Costa Mesa be more pre-
pared in any type of disaster.

weekly check-in meetings at 8:30

Passenger traffic up
again at John Wayne
More travelers went through
John Wayne Airport last month
than ever before, airport offi-
cials reported Wednesday.
In August, 872,271 travelers
passed through the airport. an
increase of more than 3% over
August 2003, airport spokes-
man Justin McCusker said. That
represents an 8"' increase in
commercial operations but a
drop of 4.3% in total op-
erations.
General operationi., includ-
ing small plane and business
travel, makes up 75% of the air-
port's passenger operations,
Mccusker said.
Passenger levels have risen
steadily since the county, New-
port Beach and two community
groups agreed last year to raise
limits. The cap went up from
8.4 million to 10.3 million.
"We're on pace to exceed 9
million passengers this year,"
McCusker said.
Last year, 8.5 million passen-
gers went through the airport,
he said.

said. "I do know Leslie is a quick
learner, and I'm sure she'll learn
the JOb quick."
Eaton doubted he will run for
the seat in 2006 because it's so
difficult to unseat an incumbent.
Daigle grew up in Cape Cod.
Mass., and has lived in Newport
Beach for 16 years.

Though he died five months
after his retirement. his death

Council pick
shows promise
N ewport Beach has a new
city councilman. Wait -to
be more precise, It has a
new city councilwoman.
On Tuesday night. after eight
interviews and three rounds of voting,
the city's six city oouncilmen decided
to appoint Planning C.Ommlssioner
Leslie Daigle to complete the final
two years of Gary Adams' tenn. The
councilmen praised her as a quick
study and having a fresh outlook.
Councilman John Heffernan and
Mayor Tod Ridgeway were
straight-forward in their belief that
the council needed a woman to
represent the city better. Now Daigle
has the responsibility of proving she
was the best choice -a different
burden than being the choice of the
voters.
It is a burden made heavier by the
quality of the other applicants for the
position, which Adams vacated after
he relocated to the F.ast Coast for a
job promotion. The other hopeful to
receive votes, Planning C.Ommissioner
Bany Eaton, has long been a
community leader in Eastbluff and is
a learned and thoughtful man.
Businessman John Blom, Parks
Commissioner Tun Brown and
Olamber of C.Ommerce President
Richard Luehrs all have SQlid resumes
and provided thoughtful, reasoned
answers to council members'
questions, as did Michael Browning,
Olarles Griffin and Gerald Heger.
Residents of Newport Beach are
fortunate to have such a deptll'Of
talent and commitment ready and
willing to lead the city.
The challenges ahead for Daigle
and her colleagues are many. All of
the applicants mentioned the
expansion of John Wayne Airport as
the most pressing issue, especially in
their part of town, which includes
Eastbluff and the newly annexed
Santa Ana Heights. Traffic. housing
and water quality all made the list as
well. None will be easy to solve.
But we are confident Daigle and the
rest of the council are ready to meet
them. She certainly presents herself
as intelligent, capable, compassionate
and committed. She undoubtedly will
provide the fresh perspective the
council sought She ~ background
in city governing and a knowledge of
development issues. We expect her to
serve the city well and in the tradition
of previous councilwomeQ such as
Evelyn Hart, Jean Wan and Jan Debay.

Resort alternative

R egarding the Marinapark hotel
proposaJ, many are concerned
about the potential parking
problem and traffic it could cause. A
community park including a soccer
field and boat-launch area has been
proposed as an alternative to relieve
Balboa Peninsula residents' traffic fears.
This really needs to be considered
much further. for example, a wccer
game has around 15 players per team,
two teams, at least two coaches per
team and three referees. That's 37
people. Usually, players involved in the
next game arrive before the end of the
previous game -74 people are now
present.
Once in a while. "soccer moms" in
their big SUVs will bring more than one
player to a game; most parents.
however, drive and park on their own
-let's hope Mom and Dad don't drive
separately. That would be a potential 74
parking spots needed at one time just
for the soccer field. Hopefully, nobody
stays to watch the next game or have a
picnic. Soccer games go on all day,
often from 7 a..m. to 7 p.m .• all weekend
long.
Cllances are, very few of these people
acrually live within walking or biking
distance of the park.
Now consider the boat launch. While
it's hard to predict how many boata will
be launched there each weekend, it is
known that a boat is on a trailer, usually
behind a fairly large truck. Once the
boat is launched, that truck and trailer
need to park somewhere. Cllances are.
the overflow will attempt to park on
Balboa Boulevard. Don't forget, there is
no parking on the right side of Balboa
Boulevard's westbound lanes all day on
summer weekends.
I have met people who live on the
peninsula who don't realize there
actually already is a soccer field here,
next to Balboa Park. near the Balboa
Pier. You can catch soccer. rugby and
lacrosse games on occasion.
The field is not used to its full
potential during the summer because
of a lack of parking. Why would we
want to create another soccer field that
would scare people off because of its
lack of parldng1
While I am not sure yet if I support
the hotel (there are a few things that
concern me. including parldng) or a
different park. I want people to realize
that parks are not t:raflic-free and can
be noisier than hotels. I am concerned
that this proposed soccer park will end
up being one big parking lot -and a
traffic nlghtrnare. There IJ a park

use of the fairgrounds
M uch emphasis has
been placed recently
upon the economic
SUcce58 of the Orange
County Fairgrounds in order to
refute the notion that the facility
is underutiliud.
All's well and good. However, I
have not seen any analysis of the
n~asons for its financial
well-being. In addition to the
varioui. attractions that bring
people to the fairgrounds, I
contend that the location of the
f'aJJwounds in Costa Mesa is a
major cause. Costa Mesa is
connected by a web of highways
to the rest of the county.
People can get here. The
surface streets of Harbor
Boulevard and old Newpon along
with Red Hill enable families
from North County and its
interior to reach Costa Mesa.
Check the history: Those streets
were named "Harbor" and
"Newpon" because they were
intended to take passengers to
our area Further, the San Diego
Freeway with the Santa Ana and
Costa Mesa freeways confluence
links Costa Mesa to other parts of
the county, plw. Los Angeles
County. The huge success of
South Coast Plaza can in part be
explalned by its location on the
same network. You can build it,
but if people can't get there, they
won't come.
Users of the fairgrounds have
direct access to its many facilities.
Examples are those who board
horses there, those who want to
get to Centennial Fann and those
who want to go to the Orange
County Marketplace or to the fair
itself. The state of California risks
the fairgrounds' success by
relocating that venue. In shon.
why try to "fix" what is not
broken?
Further, a line of trees borders
much of the fairgrounds. fhese
trees remind us that Orange
County's past consisted of orange
groves. t low long would the Mate
have to take to duplicate those
trees elsewhere? Maybe the trees
would be relocated, too. What
expense would be entailed?
Would they be destroyed, thus
losing the investment?
How many of the individuals
who "stud1ed" the fairgJOunds'
performance know this region?
They did not, and perhaps could
not. assess the sl~ ~

I was running about six
months late for my
biannual trek to our little
ghost camp retreat in
Mogollon, in the mountains of
southwest New Mexico. Maybe I
was lucky to be running at all.
I'd opted lo go the long way,
from our house in Corona del
Mar via Northern Arizona.
through a blank place on my
American Automobile Assn.
road map called the Grand
Canyon-ParashantNational
Monument. I'd never heard of it,
either. It's about as remote as
things get in the lower 48.
A network of dirt tracks. steep
rock-strewn trails that appear on
a map as roads. are a challenge
to a decent 4x4. It had to be a
cartographer's nightmare. We
hadn't seen a living human in
two-and-a-half days, the
cellphone had revolted, and our
coolers were perilously low on
life's real essentials.

deer leap the gate and munch
our roses. Enough reasons to be
there? Well, my wife, who's
ambivalent about the place,
buys into it every time.
I was approaching Catron
County from the north. I usually
take the fast way: Phoenix.
Globe, Safford and the mountain
adventure to Mule Creek.
Normally a nonstop
mini-marathon of 640 miles.
You might need my kind of
mind-set to want to go to Catron
al all. Some of my urban friends
question lf there is a there there.
Catron butts up to the Arizona
line -6,850 square miles -
equal to five Rhode Islands and
to greater Los Angeles.
Fifty miles east on highway
60, past the village of Pie Town,
over a 7,800·foot forested
summit and jwt beyond the
collection of buildings called
Datil is an W'ea known as the
Plains of San Augustin. It's
sage-covered and billiard-table

Array. The anay ls a collection of
huge radio telescopes -great.

hoping to catch transmissions
from other wodds. It appears
occult and expensive. Tuke a
self-guided tour and some
pictures. Nobody wiD believe
you if you don't have some.
Cabins replace tents, and rock
foundationa still dot the
mountalnaldes. Stone and
adobe structures appear in the
canyon, housing hotels,
mercantile and a bank-all
signs of permanmce. Fruit trees
put down in the 1890s are atill
bearing. The deer that make a
regular diet of our roeet a.lao
have a high rqard for fallen
fruit.
More than 100 years ago.
saloon and bawdy hoUle
proprietors, of coune, round
their way to Mogollon. The
Nefarious Blolted Goat Saloon
was an infamous distraction for
thirsty miners.
The mines were disgorging
huge sums. A school opened.
Mercantile prospered. In 1909,
telephones appeared. Saloons
throbbed wtth revelry. Boot Hill
already had more than a few
residents.
Into this wealth-driven frenzy
stepped J.P. Holland in the
summer of 1914. A barber from
Philadelphia with an eye and a
Oair for business and
opportunity, be~ the
5,000-squa.re-foot adobe that
had been known as the
Mogollon House, built around
1885. He sold everything
imaginable in this bustling and
oftentimes raucous town.
In the 1970s, tourists began to
discover this old charmer of a
ghost camp -Americans,
Europeans. Japanese, even
Australians with enough
discredonary cash to discover
and explore the American West.
In the summer of 1980, another
guy with verve, some
imagination and staying p<>\Wf
rolled up to these now-decrepit
surroundings.
Stan King of Seattle was an
electrical engineer, a seafarer
and a master of several trades,
an adventurer looking for new
digs and a new lifestyle. After
some ftnagling, he bought the
old Holland bulldlng. replete
with decaying walls, nonexistent
plumbing, lhot roof and tales of
ghostly happenings..
Stan told me 20 yea.rs ago that
he thought an inn or bed and
breakfast would work here.

Spanish tourmaline graces the
bathroom walls and
countertops. The upstairs great
room has a splendid piano and
a modest library. I took the tour.
Asked to use the bathroom. He
has flush toilets! In Mogollon,
this is a supreme engineering
feat. The commode seat, I was
told, was carved right here, .
probably rosewood, and is a
memorable sit-down.
The piano Is elegant. The beds
are as good as beds get, and the -
covers are period quilts. The
rooms1 Ghost town spleedor
with a splash of late Victorian,
and it's the only game in town.
Our two houses are about a
nine-lron up the road from the
Holland General Store, now the
Silver Creek Inn. In 1966, my
dad and mom, tooling through
this part of the West, stumbled
in here and bought a cabin for
back taxes. $1,400. lWo
bedrooms, living room, kitchen
and outhouse. We later acquired
the one next door. We've
retained period stuff: oil lamps
in case electricity falls. original
1905 doors and latches and a
dresser set and matching bed
from 1900, the year my dad was
born.

For us. perhaps a strong reason
for being there. There are 2,800
people, up 300 from 1880.

attitudes seem rooted ln the
1890s.
Well, maybe not totally. A few
semesters ago, a new guy arrived
on the scene. A medical man of
some eort who keeps buying up
property. The old store-gallery
across the road from my house
changed bands for $250,000.

lead after the first mile.
But a group of seven runners.
including May, running the
course for the first time. stayed
close.

on the course dubbed "puke hill,"
where runners ascend from a
small valley.
"[Sumner! said 'go' 25 meters
after the top of the hill," May said.

I went, I went all out."

seventh in 20:29 while teammates

winds that often blew sand acroM

"The wind makes you work for
everything," May said.
May also said Anne St Geme's
absence made CdM work even
harder.
"This is a strong team that
works through it." May said "It is
a mental shift because you don't
have as big a cushion, but we
stepped it up and pulled
through."
Wong finished second in 17:05,
five seconds behind Northwood's
Brent Overlin, while Turner
(17:22) and Guthrie (17:35),
placed thitd and fourth. respec·
tively, for CdM.
Guthrie said he stayed with
Wong and Overlin halfway
through the three-mile race, but
couldn't maintain the pace.
"I couldn't (Keep up any
more,!" Guthrie said "It's a bit
dusty out here. You're breathing a
lot harder and it's harder to pace
yourself in the heat"

placed sixth in 18:17 while team·

face an opponent who laves off of
big pays.
"They looked awfully good
(last wee lei against Ocean View,"
Baldwin said. "They give you a
lot of formations to defend. fhey
had a 96-yard pai.s and two run~
for big gains. Almost all of their
offense came in big plays."

3-5-2, but sometimes they'll
have six linebaclcers out there,"
Baldwin said. "They bring guys
real fast, blit.zing two or three
guys practically every time,
which confuses the blocking."
Baldwin believes the offensive
line is ready for the task.
"One positive for us on offense
has been our pass bloc.king," he
said. ·French didn't come close
to gelling touched in the last
game.H
But no matter how many
points the offense puts up, the
defense, and even special teams
have allowed big plays that have
resulted in touchdowns for op-
ponents.
"Everybody's got to do their
job, they just haven't done it."
Baldwin said "We had a punt
blocked and a punt returned for
a touchdown (against Hunting-
ton Beach). We are our own
worst enemies. I have a lot of re-
spect for the teams we have
played, but I don't think they
were that much better than us.
We've beaten ourselves."

357 yards on the ground.
"We had some difficulty finding
ball in the misdirection !against
Villanova Prep)." Monarch said.
"We're going to ay to correct that
with simple moves with the line-
baclcer spots"
