Orange County Superior Court Judge
Francisco Briseno declared a mistrial in
June when jurors were hopelessly dead-
locked in the case.
The defense team for the three 19-
yem:-old defendants hired jurors from
the ftrst trial to act as advisors for the
seconc:f uial.
Prosecutors made a tactical decision
to not use the testimony of Trinka Porra-
ta. who is considered an expert on drugs
like Ecstasy and GHB, Deputy Dist Atty.

Burkitt's lymphoma. a cancer that
deveJops rapidly and mainJy
appears in children.
He was treated with several
surgeries and aggressive and
pa.inful chemotherapy. That pain
was in turn treated with drugs
that caused mood swings and
hallucinations and left him
suffering withdrawal symptoms
similar to a heroin addlct's.
But he recovered, making up
missed ac.hoolwork at home and
graduating with his class from
Newport Harbor Higti School in
2000. He also got back into the
water, returning to his spot on the
school's water polo team and
trying out as a lifeguard for the
city of Newport Beach.
Still weak from his illness.
Mcc rary didn't make it his first
time out, but he tried again in
1999 and earned a spot
·1 got set back for a few years.

McCra.ry said. "It was a reallybtg
achievement for me."
This spring. he graduated from
UC lrvine with a bachelor's
degree in philosophy and decided
to go to Japan, where some of his
friends already have ventured to
teach English.
McCrary said he'll miss the
camaraderie and public service of
being a lifeguard. It's possible that
he could retum to the job when
he returns to the area. Newport
Beach Ufeguard Capt. Jim Turner
said.
"He's a good employee, and he
does a good 1ob," Turner said.
'We have a handful of employees
like that every year that take a
year off and go do wild and
wonderful things. r
McCra.ry's family and friends
will miss him, but they'll keep in
touch via e-mail. His father, Lynn
McCrary, said he's thankful his
son lived through a devastating
illness. and he'll be pleased with
any good that comes of the Japan
adventure.

temporary. portable lighting pol-
icy io May. ln addition to requir-
ing groups to submit requests
two months in advance of when
they need the lights, the policy
also requires a public hearing 30
days before the lights are used.
Neither requirement was met in
the case of these two groups.
AYSIJ requested lWO lights for
socc.er practice from 5 to 8 p.m.
every weeknight from the begin-
ning of October to February.
It's tough to find fields to play
on these days because of the
comprehensive school renova-
tion project the school district is
going through. Sarris said.
"We're kind of the poor step-
child of Newport Beach and
Costa Mesa. because they don't'
give us lighted fields," Sarris said.

lighted. but the residents are all

TwentysomethingS who've lost their way
A year and a half ago. I m<Md
from Welt Newport to
Corona del Mar because I
couJdm stand the ua rentals, the
loudneaa and the partying
anymore. Being awakened at 2 am.
when the ban cloeed and being
kept up by drunken yelling and
ldiocy until 4 a.m. wu making me
lnto a crazy person. After 11 yean
of this, the Newport Beach police
ofBcen recogn.iz.ed my volce when I
called at night It wu time to get
out of Dodge.
So here I am. cocooned in
Corona del Mar, having endured
much aggravation and spent
I-won't-tell-you-how-much money
to get here, and a nealby house gets
rented to a bunch of adolescents
disguised as grown men. Since the
weather has turned warm. their
windows and doors are constantly
open and the sound from their
large-screen television permeates
the neighborhood. I almost don't
even have to tum on my own
television to know what's going on
-not that they ever watch
anything I'm even remotely
lnterested in.
The neighbors and I were not
happy. I made many attempts to
handle the situation constructively.
I spoke to the tenants, to the owner
of the property and to the owner of
the construction company that will
be demolishing the propeny
eventually. It was all to no avail. The
tenants refused to quiet down.
So. I pulled out the big guns and
made a call to my friend, an
environmental services officer at
the Newport Beach PoUce
Department Now that's an
over-statement, but over the years.
I've had many occasions to ask for
his assistance in enforcing the

reasonable person or normal
sensitivities in the area, after a
peace or code-enforcement officer
has first requested that the person

The law provides for an
escalating series of fines to be
levied against the tenants and the
propeny owner, culminating in
legal action against the latter.
And what do you know'? With the
officer's help, the boys have finally
ceased and desisted. At least, for
the most part. What a relief.
But then I ask myself, "Why are
30-something men still partying
late into the rUgbt. sleeping until
noon and playing video games all
afternoon?"
If you haven't already heard
about it, it's a bona fide new social
trend, in the malting for 50 years,
that Is finally being documented
and written about It's called the
M quartedife a1aia.. ft refers to the
period of limbo after college and
throughout the 20I that ls filled
wltb confusion. fear and Instability.
Nowadays. fuD·fledpd adulthood
doesn't begin until nearly 30.
Today's twentysomethings are
delaying the tiaditional rites of
passage Into adulthood They are
taking their time fln.lsbing college
and dating more before deciding to
settle down. They are likety to
sample several career possibilities
and to ~ wiWngty from dty to
city to do this. They are driven by
the fear of making the wrong
choice -a mistake -and having
to start all over again.
There's even some thought that
the quarterlife crisis will replace the
midlife aisis for this generation.
~ntylOmethin~ want to equal o r
exceed the level of affluence they
grew up with. They want their
marriages to last. And since they
have taken their time to commit to
the choices that will stabill7,e and
create their lives for years to come,
there may be no pressing need to
reevaluate and redo their lives in
their middle years. After all, choic~
made only lO to 15 years ago, with
the benefit of some maturity, are
more likely to still fit in your 40s.
l would think that anyone who
has grown children can wholly
relate to this. I know I can. Actually,
I feel relieved to know that what I
witnessed has a name and is a
bona-fide transition.
I've watched two of my daughters
(now 30 and 33) grapple with
creating a life for themselves in their
20s. It was painful to see. A
progression of boyfriends. unhealthy
dead-end relationships and a series
of menial, unfulfilling jobs just to
make ends meet -very hard to find

This is very different than when I
was young. I went to college,
married right afterward, worked for
a short time, always knowing that I
wanted to start a family sooner
rather than later, and ctid just that
No angst, no flailing. little
confusion. Not that any of that was
particularly easy. but 11 was a dear
path, and it was r~ponsible and
adult.
So what's with lhe adolescents
masqueradtng as grown men in the
party house? WeU, ~ms to me that
they have not yet gotten past the
quarterlife transition. Although
they look to me to be well into their
30l>, they clearly do not go to work
or have steady romantic
relationship~.
It makes me wonder why some
twentywrnethings make it and
others do not

Gardner anticipated the movement with

not always be rawr sharp in his delivery,
bur his interpretation is scorching. His
Marty Feldman-esque eyes enrich his

Cambridge in the early 1930s.
He is immedtately smitten, and
Gilda likes his quiet,
unassuming ways. They are
briefly lovers, drift apart and
then reunite years later in Paris.

boring and one-dimensional.
There are a lot of little
vignettes that are beautifully
photographed but don't serve
the story at all. By the time the
film reaches its climax. and
Gilda's fate is revealed, you will
be more than ready to get your
head out of this cloudy mess
and your feet out the door.

and Kasey came over (while the
clock was stopped to move the
chains! and said we should run
X-in Post," Newport Coach Jeff
Brinkley said. •He called that
play for Link, who made a great
catch."

other 44 minutes were defen-
sive oriented.
Corona del Mar jumped out
10 a 3-0 lead on Andrew Hum-
mel's 24-yard field goal in the
second quarter after recovering
a fumble on the Newport Har-
bor 9-yard line. Following line-
backer Billy Brown's 19-yard in-
lerception to 1he Newport
Harbor 3, Wess Presson ran to
the right side for a l 0-0 half-
time lead.
At the half Corona had 38
yards of offense, while the Sail-
ors managed to rack up 87.
•1 told our defense at the half
to keep their heads up.'' Brin-
kley said. ·Their offense wasn't
really doing much, so 1 told our
guys to keep fighting hard."
Presson returned the sec-
ond-half kickoff 62 yards to the
32, and five plays later, Tom
Welch threw a 5-yard curl to
wide receiver Kevin Welch, who
caught the ball at the 2 and
spun past the defender to walk
in for a touchdown.

sixth straight victory over the
crosstown rivals.
"It feels awesome," Martin
said. "It's the best feeling in the
world right now."
Senior defensive tackle Kaia·
na Kalama-Dutro applied pres·
sure on the quarterback
throughout the game and reg·
istered a sack late in the fourth.

said. "Our offense stepped up
and made the plays when they
needed to win the game for

Running back Jasen Ruiz was
called into action after Theriot
s uffered a fractured left arm
midway through the third
quarter. The sophomore
rushed once for 3 yards and
caught two passes for 9 during
a fourth-quarter drive.
