Mesa's newest coffee
shop, even though
proprietors refer to loyal
customers as • Peetniks."
Emeryville-based Peel's
Coffee and Tea Inc. opened a
store on East 17th Street last
week. and some Peetniks have
already sniffed it out.
·1 grew up in Nonhem
California, and they have a lot
of Peet 's there,· said Ben
Ingmire, who lives across the
'>treet from the Costa Mesa store
and has dropped in several
times since it opened.
Founded in 1966 in Berkeley
by Dutch immigrant Alfred Peet,
the company now has 87 stores
that serve coffee and tea drinks
but are focused on selling
freshly roasted coffee beans in
more than 30 varieties.
"We're pretty fanatical about
freshness," Peel's chief
executive Pat O'Dea said. "You
need to get it from the roaster
to someone's cup as quickly as
possible."
Employees in Em eryville
hand-roast the coffee beans,
which are measured out for
customers in the store, said
Scott Yturriaga, manager of the
Costa Mesa Peet's.
"lfyou were a customer, you
could look right in the bins, and
that's actually what you're going
10 get," he said.
The company touts the dark.
rich flavor of its freshly roasted
beans as what sets it apart from
other coffee purveyors. For
some customers, that's an
important selling point.

Working for Starbucks for
about five years didn't convince
Ingmire to drink its coffee.
"I prefer Peet's just because
its a richer brew,• he said. "It's
got a little bit of a kick to it."
Things have run smoothly
since the store opening because
employees were trained at
Peet's Corona del Mar store,
then shifted to a new Laguna
Beach store before coming to
Costa Mesa, Yturriaga said.
A few special "reserve blends"
that sell for $29.95 per half
pound may be too rich for the
average consumer's blood, but
Yturriaga said the com~any
hopes customers will try Peet's
coffee first and eventually buy
the beans to take home.
~This is only our third Orange
County store, so we're still
building that knowledge and
awareness,· he said.

Martin and Link were factors in the
win against the Sea Kings, with Martin

the third quarter. Martin also caught a
two-point conversion pass following
link's 63-yard punt return for a touch-
down. Unk also caught the 47-yard
game-winning pass with I :07 remain-
ing.
"To be able to come away with a win
is a sign that we are competitors." Brin-
kley said.
The injuries in the opening weeks not
only gave Newport Harbor the resiliency
to battle back. it also allowed backups to
gain valuable experience.
With Rippon out, fullback Thevor The-
riot and sophomore Jasen Ruiz were
called upon to handle the running
game. And with Martin out. Theriot
moved to inside linebacker. The ab-
sence of Young and Theriot at outside
linebadt.er gave Gttg Miner and Billy
Brown an opportunity to step up on de-
fense.
In the Corona del Mar game, Theriot
injured his left arm. It has been diag-
nosed as a dislocated elbow, which
means he should be able to return to
action shortly. But It also means Brown
and Ruiz will be able to build upon the
playing time they have seen so far.

Airport struggling to stay under the cap

month, activists already are looking past 201 5, when
limits on travelers annually are scheduled to end.

JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT -It's the
nagging problem everyone's talking
about but no one seems to know how to
solve.
If the number of travelers using John
Wayne continues to climb at such rates,
the airport will reach its cap of 10.3 mil·
lion passengers a year within the next
two years. according to some airport
activists.
Several people are pursuing solutions
to what they admit is a regional prob-
lem, but some of them are ftying under
the radar for now.
John Wayne Airport's passenger levela
have soared every month for the last
year as a result of increased capacity al-
lowed by the settlement agreement that
governs airport operations. August was
Its busiest month ever, with more than
872,000 people using the airport.

number of lights and passengers and
sets a curfew on flights to limit noise in
surrounding residential areas. The
agreement was renegotiated in 2003 to
raise the cap from 8.4 million to I 0.3
million annual passengers through
2011. The cap t4en becomes 10.8 mil
lion passengers a year until 2015.

two-car garages and individual driveways.

changing the land-use designations from
commercial and high-density residential
to low-density residential.

Opposition to the project from the near·
by College Park neighborhood started
even before the commission considered it
Monday. Opponents believe the project is
too dense, will exacerbate an already over-
crowded parking situation and reduce
property values. They also oppose open·
ing a sound wall at Wake Forest Road to
allow access to the site.
Reservoir water-ready
Most of the opponents have Uved in the
College Park neighborhood for decades
and don't want their quality of life dis-
twbed more than the Harbor Center's af.

The few who apoke in favor of the

The reservoir has a murky past.
It was drained in 1984 to remove
an infestation of African clawed
frogs. and it was shut down 22
times between 1986 and 1993 be·
