Corona del Mar Centennial Celebration cannot come

working to put on the birthday bash this weekend.

lage to plan a I OOth birthday.
And the people who live and work in
Corona del Mar are more than ready to
celebrate what is a once-in-a-lifetime
event
Oose to 150 people have volunteered
their time to help organize and work the
Corona del Mar Centennial Celebration
this weekend, said Miraya Uaurado,
volunteer coordinator for the event.
The volunteers will set up exhibits,
serve food at the mini Taste of Newport
"1bat's a lot of wort." Uaurado said.
Initially she didn't think it would take
this many volunteers, she said.
"I was surprised," Uaurado said. "It's
a tremendous effort."

Aceves preach against
smoking last year. But
Aceves lcnows kids aren't easily
hooked by a single lecture.
"They're usually exposed to ii when
they're young, and my goal i1' to give
them Wormation about it, so they
can make good choices."
Aceves visited Lori Klac;.c,en's
fifth-grade classroom Monday to
reiterate her point. and she hope~
that by next year she can hook the
kids on the fact that smoking kills..
Aceves, a Newport-Mesa district
substance abuse prevention teacher,
hopes to Light a fire under each
fourth-. fifth· and sixth-grade student
in the district, so they'll make wise
decisions involving drugs, alcohol
and tobacco. She visits each student
three Limes before they reach ..eventh
grade. she said.
Students learned that cigarettes
can cause cancer, can harm the heart
and Jun~ and can negatively affect
short-tenn memory and other
senses.
"We learned about cigarettes and
how bad they are for you." Alex
Mazur. 10, said. "She taught us about
how many chemicals are in them
and that they're like bug spray and
nail polish remover. People think
they're cool, but it can hurt them."
"I teach prevention awareness to
the kids at young ages, so they won't
start when they get older," she said.

column ever. I would

in Newport· Mesa" and
chronicled a walk I take every
day with my small dog -
another dog colurrm. This walk
winds by several stores on East
dislike of Costa Mesa's Fourth of
July and fireworks in general -I
received angry letters implying
that I am some lcind of liberal.
That is true, but J still don't know
how they got that out of my
disliking the Fourth.
One woman srud she liked the
article I wrote on a swarm of
bees much better than when I
attempted to comment on more
weighty issues, like the Iraq War.
Her implication? Keep on with
the creature commentaries, dear,
and let the big boys and girts
write about the heavy stuff.
So. I'm in a quandary. My
editor wants me to keep looking
for local political issues. and
some readers prefer bees.
"I liked that one you did on
the dogs escaping," srud one of
my neighbors. "That was your
best, yeL" I feel like Woody Allen
-maybe not the best
comparison -when he tried to
make some serious movies.
Everyone begged him to go back
to "Sleeper" and "Everything You
Always Wanted to Know About
Sex." Maybe the critics had a
point, though. His funny movies
were much better.
I'm blond. thanks to Traci over
at Ouistopher and Company in
Corona del Mar, so maybe I
should stick to "Some like it Hot:
Our Newport Beach Heat
Wave" -type reflections.
I've been checlcing the other
commentary writers' columns
for how they do a local
viewpoint. I thinJc those authors
have as much trouble as I do.
They. like J, tend to introduce a
column as follows: "As I was
having a coffee at The Alta
Coffeehouse in Balhoa. I thought
ahout global warming."
I 7th Street in Newport Heights,
between Tustin and Irvine, to be
specific. I wrote about haw
Morri's flowers predict Aulumn,
even when it's 90 degrees, and
how I saw a boy stringing holiday
lights in shorts, so I knew it was
winter.
"Best column you ever wrote,"
guffawed a friend. "I laughed
myself sick."
"What about the one I did on
literary censorship?"
"Oh, yeah. That was pretty.
um. serious."
By the way. if a friend says one
of my conunent:lries is one of
their favorites, it's usually one
that I hated after I saw it in print.
Conversely, the ones I think will
get me into the New Yorker, tend
to bomb. They are printed, but
no one says a word. It's like when
you go to work with a really bad
haircut. The world averts its eyes.
So, I must bow to the
inevitable. I will continue to
write about animals that are
darting. but I will try to do it in
the larger perspective of how
they will be affected by the
airport traffic.

Mansoor is entitled to his
opinions, but the truth is that in
my prior term as council
member, I was the first to start
the process of retaining
restrictions and curfews on John
Wayne Airport. and I pushed the

supervisors, other cities and

government. I began negotiating
with Long Beach Airport for
similar limitations. I did not
support a "great park."

I can't get over how the "No on L" folk are
so concerned with preserving the parklands
of Newport Beach, yet they have polluted
Newport Beach with their campaign signs.

At the World Team Tennis Smash Hits
event at the Bren Events Center Mon-
day, a fan yelled to the world's No. 2-
ranked tennis player known for his blis-
tering serve that his serves look faster
on television than in real life.
Roddick stopped the exhibition
. rnbred doubles set he was playing with
Tracey Austin against Andre Agassi and
Anna Koumikova to talk with the heck-
ler. Roddick invited the man to try to re-
turn a few of his serves.
After three heaters, Dave Slin&WY
reached into his pocket and waved a
white handkerchief in surrender.
Such was the light mood surrounding
the I 2th annual charity event that raises
money for the Elton John AJDS Founda-
tion.
