Victim's 84-year-old father-in-law accused of
shooting her several times, then turning the
gun on himself. He survived his head wound.

her. police said.

Mesa Police at about 8:30 a.m.

shot her inside their Jeanette
Place home, Lt. Ron Smith said.
Police showed up at the scene
and forced enLry into the home.
Theodore Cheron, 84, was
taken to Western Medical Center
in Santa Ana. where his condition
is unknown, Smith said. lf he sur-
vives. he will be charged with
murder, Smith added.

microchtpped. vaccinated,
dewonned and weighed to
schedule their spay and
neuter appointment. along
with blood testing for feline
leuk:emJa and feline AIDS
before going to their new
homes.

patrons' greatest gaffes.
There was the time when a
man managed to drive his
car up to the orchestra level
via the parlcing garage
walkway. And at least one
person each night mistakes

when people come for one

These people have been arrested on
suspicion of driving under the influence of
an intoxicant. They have only been arrested
on suspicion of a crime and, as with all
suspects, are considered inn~nt until
proved guilty.

Buttolph grew up on Long
Island in New York and worked
in the family real estate
business until 1975. He opened
his own law practice, focusing
on smaJJ businesses in 1982 In
Santa Barbara and has lived in
Newpon Beach for three years.
Buttolph saJd he is proud to
have worked with the city on
the Greenllght law as an
independent individual, not as
part of Greenlight or any other
group. He said he would be
more of an independent voice

Fireworks light up Costa

At the candidates forum on Oct. 7 at
the Cosca Mesa Senior Center, many
important concerns were voiced by
seniors.
As a well-informed senior, l asked
about a doun penetrating questions in
the name of all seniors. The problem of
illegal fireworks was discussed. eo~ta
Mesa is one of only five cities still
hanging on to fireworks on the Fourth
of July and other times. Banning legaJ
ones will help annillilate illegal
fireworks.
Just think of the possible injuries,
pollution, fear, destruction of property.
etc. Why can't the 18 fireworks stands
from high schools disappear? Let these
students plan their own fundra.isers and
make them a success. Lastly, will the
nine candidates who are not elected in
November still be interested in city
concerns -the homeless, banning
fireworks, planning low-income senior
housing?

I can't get over how the "No on LM
folk are so concerned with preserving
the parlclands of Newport Beach that
they have polluted Newport Beach
with their signs. They've even placed

to take them down.
If they could do half as good a job of

wiU be maintained and improved as
they do at plastering the city, they
might get some votes. But they are
making a purely emotional appeal,

Foley is all about addressing issues
that affect our daily lives -
countywide. As a member of AirFair, I
have worked with Foley and know she
is committed to resolving airport
issues.
She knows John Wayne Airpon's
passenger levels have increased every
month for the last year. If the number
of travelers using John Wayne
continue~ to climb at the~e rates, the
12th Annual
airport will reach its cap within the
next two years. She understands that
the current cap limits passengers to
10.8 million per year by 2015. I say
lock the gate at 10.8.
Foley supports AirFair and its policy
of no future expansion of John Wayne
Airport beyond the terms of the
present Settlement Agreement. She
has assisted AirFair In organizing
·neighborhood meetings and met with
leaders in both Newport Beach and
Costa Mesa to encourage them to
begin negotiations now in order to
keep these limitations in place when
the settlement agreement expires in

waged by Frank and Fran Robinson to
save the Back Bay'l
It is disturbing to see the
GreenJight group denigrated by
unthinking or uninformed critics.
The Marinapark project may be an
attractive plan, but s hould the city'!.
master plan be changed to
accommodate this development on
public land? What is to deter another
development to ask for the same
treatment7 And who can ensure thil>
project will be successful?
Surely the Balboa Bay Oub was
given a windfall on the use of public
land by an acquiescent City C:Ouncil
many years ago. I low much of a view
do we now have of the bay7 The
so-called public access is also less
than negligible.

Sailors' demise against
Woodbridge in first
league setback. •

Harbor High girls vol-
leyball coach Dan Glenn has been saying
all year that his team consistently has too
many unforced errors.
But despite the errors. the Sailors are
usually able to pull out victories, riding
on the shoulders of senior captain Kiley
Hall and sophomore Coco Yokoyama.
Tuesday night was different, as the
mishaps aept up and sanlc the Sailors in
their 25-23, 25-22, 25-17 lo~ to host
~bridge in a Sea View 1.eague match.
"'!hey did a better job of not beating
themselves," Glenn said. "I don't Wdilt to
take away from their victory, but we can't
make so many unforced errors.·
The errors kept snea.lcmg up just when
the Sailors [7-7, 4-1 m league) were get-
ting into their rhythm, and ended up be-
ing the eventual cause of the team"s first
league loss.
Last week. after Newport swept La-
guna Hills, Glenn said whoever wins
Tuesday's match ~n his team and
the Warriors (15-4, 5-0) will have an in-
side track on the Sea View League title.
In a match where it looked like any-
thing could change at any second. Wood-
bridge took the first step in the right di-
rection for that league title, but the team
still has to deal with the pesky Sailors
again on Nov. 4 -this time at Newport
Harbor.
OtJ to a slow start in the first game and
down, 6-1, two aces were dealt up by 6-
foot junior Bryana Carey and the Sailors
rallied to tie the score at IO apiece. A few
points later and Yokoyama slammed the
ball over the net to put Newport up. 16-

The lead changed hands five times
from point 10 to the end of the first
game. But the mLSfires for the Sailors
started when they were up. 22-21, after
another Yokoyama kill. And just a couple
of errors later, they were down, 1-0. In the
match.
The second game brought the same
son of luck for the Sailors -rallying late
to come close, but eventually shooting
t.hemselves in the foot -and the last
game, Newport was ju.st outplayed.
"We had the momentum the whole
time,~ Woodbridge coach Donnie Rafter
sald "We didn't get in too many slwnps
and we rnl.n.imized their runs."
The momentum for the Warriors was
aided by the ear-piercing screams from
the crowd every time Woodbridge scored
a point
And the blocking game of 5-foot-10
Stephanie lrlnen. 6-foot Thryn Tumutter,
Carey and 6-1 ~ca Robson couldn't
stuff Woodbridge's hitters a_, much as
they have been earlier th.is season.
Glenn said he had hoped his seniors
would step up. like they usually do in ~
ery match. Hall led the team with 10 kil1'
and senJor Carey had two ace. but the
other senJors were shut down.
Yokoyama had six kills. Robson had
five and HOOJey Bwnham had four. but
Y«>odbridge's senior outside hitter. Jor-
dyn Druary, had a maJch-high 13 kills.
After the first two games, G&enn said he
switched his lineup and told his t.eam to
focus more on not maJcing mistakes. But
the mistakes kept com.lng and the Wani-
ora kept capltali71ng on them
"We did $0rDe good ~ though..
Glenn said. •And I don't want to blame
thJs loss all on us. \\OOdbridge played

I caught up to the first

around trees to get a glimpse of
the competition on th.is October

months down the road to March
when the Toshiba Senior Oassic
makes its annual stop at
Newport Beach Country Oub.
These same trails I follow in a
cart now are where thousands
will waJk come March, when the
world's finest senior golfers -
those 50 and older -compete
against one another in the most
philanthropic event on the
Ouunpions Tour.
I glance toward the 18th
green, where a group is
finishing. and think back to
skyboxes, where spectators
watched Jack Nicklaus sink his
final pun on Sunday just seven
months ago, in his first Toshiba
appearance.
Or defending champion Tom Purtzer shooting a record 62 in
Friday's opening round.
