rinapart resort on city land, have
poured money into their campaigns.
Both sides say they're victims of sign
theft and vandalism and have been
slandered by opponents.
The measure is backed by developer
Stephen Sutherland, who '>igned an
agreement with the city in 2000 for the
right to negotiate to develop the prop·
eny. llis plans, which include a 110·
room luxury waterfront reson with 12
fractional units sold for three -rncmth
Sutherland has thus far funded the
entire pro-Measure L campaign himself,

to balance our desire to provide good
customer service with the need to be
able to sustain bus service finan-

fastest-growing trarult services in the

The directors approved other in-
creases Monday. A one-day bus pass
wiU jump from $2.50 to $3; a 30-day
bus pas.5 will increase from $37.50 to
$45; a senior/disabled one-way bus
fare will go up from 25 to 50 cents:

will increase from $10 to $15.
The increases were approved after
agency staff members conducted ex-
tensive public outreach, holding more
than 20 public meetings since July to
discuss the changes. The agency re·

second reading of a slew of approvals
for the church, including a general
plan amendment to aJlow it to build a
new facility at San Joaquin Hills Road
and MacArthur Boulevard. The
project, in the works for more than a
year, ent.ails a 34,000-square-foot
facility to replace the church's current
site next to Our L.ady Queen of Angels
Roman Catholic OlUrch in the
Eastbluff neighborhood.
The council will consider approving
an annual performance report for the
U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development The report
shows what the city accomplished
with the funds it received from HUD,
which are provided to help cities meet
affordable housing and community
development needs of their residents,
especially those considered to have
low or moderate levels of income.
The council is expected to approve
the report.
There is currentJy about $109,000
budgeted for the project. To approve
it, the council will have to t.ransfer
about SI 91,000 from other funds like
the ga.'> tax fund balance. Staff
members recommend the city retrofil
the three bridges while it resolves the
Little Island Bridge decision.

Martha DeSantis-Hemnan
Martha DeSanbs-Hemnan was born on September 15, 1922 in
Ctucago, lltrnois. and was the second of 5 children. Her fat.he<
John DeRosa, a . prominent musician. moved the family t
Southern CaUfom1a in the late 1920's . After losing her husba
Paul 1n 1966 and while ra1sing her five children, Martha ~
a successful business woman in La Canada-Flintridge wher
she lived. Martha was activety invotved in the Rotary Club. the
T oumament 91 R<),ses. the CFlppers, the La Canada Thursday
Club, the K1wanrs Club and numerous other civic and
community organ12abons. Since 1934, she enjoyed vacations
wrth her family on Balboa Island.
Martha died of natural causes on October 24 2004 and is
survived by her husband. David, their nine chlidren· Louise:
Susan; Robert, his wtte Kari; Virginia. her husband 'Eugene:
Stephen, his wife Kristine; Tom, his wife Jeanne' Leslie;
Suzanne, her husband Jeff; Joan, her husband Bill· their
thirteen grandchildren Nicholas. Tlmothy, Stephen, Robert,
Lauren, Delaney, Grace. Bryant, Sarah, David, Lauren,
CMstopher, Keoneth and one great grandchild Alexander, her
brothers Vincent and Richard. their wfves Salty and Anne· slster
Mary. her husband Dan; sisters-In-law Dorothy and Nonna·
brother-in-law RJchard, and his wtfe Lola.. '

Linda Dixon hopes to be elected to the Costa Mesa City Council once again.
"I think they're all meaningful
in one way or another,· she said.
"I like to be able to get out into
the community and hear what
the people are saying. I don't
think anybody comes to City
Council having all the answers.·
She has plenty of ideas about
what needs to be done in the
city.
Continued improvements on
the Westside, stronger
involvement in John Wayne
Airport negotiations and a new
library are among them. But
Dixon is also willing to step back
and listen to others or let them
lead, she said.
Dixon and her husband
originally settled in Costa Mesa
after a friend told them they'd
like it. and today she's proud
that two of her children chose to
buy homes here.
"It's an eclectic, diverse city."
Dix.on said. "It's the real world. I
think sometimes too many
people dwell on the negative
and forget about all the positive
things in Costa Mesa."

Resort measure would
revamp peninsula area
As a resident of Newport Beach
and vacationer for many more, I
would like to comment on Measure
L. which would allow for a resort to
be built on the Marinapm site on
Balboa Peninsula.
My husband, Paul, joins me in
asking for your support for the
measure. We moved lo Newport
Beach because we have always loved
the area and spent many of our
vacations on the island. We need a
plan like Measure L to revitalize our
community.
As a Californian, I am used to
traffic, which will always be a part of
Southern c.alifomia. Th.is is not an
issue about traffic. It is about
improving an area that needs
something new and beautiful, a
beaudful Marin.apark. where we can
proudly bring our guests.
The dry certaWy doesn't need
another noisy public boar launch or
a triple-deck.er boat storage. And as
for a noisy soccer field, there are
plenty of other parb for fields.
Think about the noisy traffic from a

Uphill battle continues for Mustangs
T he season could not
have gotten off to a
worse start for the Costa
Mesa High football
team. Dave Perldns was fired as
head coach and athletic director
July 23, six weeks before the first
game. Tom Baldwin was
elevated from linebacker and
receiver coach to the head spot
Aug. 11.
MWe had to piece together a
coaching staff," Baldwin said. ~It
has been tough. All of my
coaches have other jobs and
schedules."
Nick Romo was not able to
accept the job as defensive line
coach until a week before the
first game because of a
scheduling conflict.

installed a new

"We never really had

Harbor," Baldwin said.
"OCC is right aaoss the
street from us, so that is RICK obviously easJer for us.

has been lauded for its good
sportsmanship.
