three arrested
Three men wielding handguns
robbed a Coton,a del Mar jewelry store
Wednesday morning, and one
barricaded himself in a nearby shop
for nearly two hours before
swrendering to police.
Newport Beach Police arrested Los
Angeles residents Herbert Nelson
Kirkwood, 31, Dominick Edwards, 32,
and Kenney Dwayne Watkins, 27, in a
bQtched attempt to rob Jewels by
Joseph at the Corona del Mar Plaza.
Watkins bid out in Gelato Paradiso

Bus riders will need $1.25 for a
one-way bus fare, starting Jan. 2. The
Orange County Transporta~on
Authority Board of Dlrectora on
Monday approved the increase -the
first time bus fares have men ln 14

one-day bus pass will jump from $2150
to $3; a 30-day bus pus will increase.

black swan, one of Newport
Harbor's most famous
residents, a little under the
weather.
On Thwsday, a Newport
Beach animal control
officer found Rupert
wandering. weak and
disoriented, along Bayside
Drive, said Debbie McGuire,
wildlife dlrector for the
Wetlands and WildJife Care
Center in Huntington
Beach . After a brief stop for
some blood work at lhe All
Creatures Care Cottage in
Costa Mesa, Rupert is
recovering at the care
center.
And, true to his
personality, he's a little
cranky about it.
"Rupert's used to having
the whole bay 10 himself.·
McGuire said. "But,
unfortunately, he got sick
because of the pollution in
the bay."
Medical tests showed that
he likely has a bacterial
infection. she said. That
would make sense, since
rainstorms ltke the one last
week wash pollution
downstream into Rupert\
home. she said.
Rupert has seen his fair
share of pollution and has
found himself al the center
numerous time.,, wildlife

said. His mate, Pearl, died
in 2002, following a diesel
fuel spill that prevented her
from fighting an infection.

instrumental in the
city adopting
Marines from
Camp Pendleton, a
relationship that is
sure to flourish in Steve
the coming years. Bromberg

Newport Beach
voters' support.

on to his District 7 seal
Rosansky. in the year since being
appointed to the council, has taken
the lead on several notable 1SSues:
the future of the mobile homes at
El Morro and the Anny Corps of
Engineers' now-abandoned plan to
place sand dredged from the Santa
Ana River onto the beaches of West
Newport, whjch is part of
RosansJcy's District 2. He also has
bee n a consensus builder. one who
can woric with aU sides of an issue
or debate.

maintain its high quality of life and
high degree of public services, and

FALSE ARGUMENTS
Of course, for Newport Beach
voters. the ballot doesn't end with
the City Council races. There also is
Measure L. perhaps the most
anticipated vote in Newport-Mesa.
At its most simple, Measure L
would alter the wning designation
forMarinaparkontheBalboa
Penlnsula to allol.v for a 110-room
hotel and community center. But
nothing bas been simple when it
comes to this race. There has been
a rash of campaign mailers and 1V
ads and corresponding amount of
debate, much of it ftDed with
half-truths or entirety off the salient
points.
Although the Dally Pilot has not
offered an endonement on this
issue, we have encouraged voters
to find their way through the
personal, smear attaclcs and make
a dedsion based on the question
at band: Do you think a hotel ii
the best wte for this landl Whether

Orange County would like to
Shank everyone who
suppotted our recent proposal t o
build eight new homes in Costa
Mesa.
We are disappointed that these
homes were not approved by the
Costa Mesa City Council during
their meeting on Oct. 18. We believe
strongly that this could be a terrific
project for this neighborhood,
whether the homes ate built by
Habitat for Humanity or aome other
residential dev-eloper.
Although we respect the decision
of the City Council, we are mystified
rhat arguments agaln&t this parcel
being appropriate for residential (or
for that p:iatter any other)
development prevailed over the
opportunity for eight hard-working
families, currently living in
substandard housing. to own their
own homes In Cotta Mesa.
OUr Yolunteer1 and families build
attractive ownership homes -not
overcrowded, poorly maintained
rental propetty. Habttat families are
good neighbors. 'Ibey work hard to
maintain their homes and become

St Andrew's Presbyterian Church
recently announced a 40%
reduction in their expansion
proposal, by 14,280 square feet,
which will significantly reduce traffic
and environmental impacts.
The plans were reduced by 24.4%
making the total proposal 27,168
square feet of additional
development. This revised proposal
should reduce the car trips to and
from the churd> and will
significantly reduce construction
t:ratllc lmpacta on the
netgbborllood. 1b1s compromise
will atill allow St. Andrew's plans for
Its youth center to be realtud to the

Volunteers for a Jimmy
Carter Blitz Build." I just
had to see how a bunch
of unskilled volunteers
could build three homes
in one week. Seeing the
homes take shape and
finished in that short of a
time, and working
alongside th e families,
struck a chord in me that
was a profound
life-changing experience.
These were hard-working
families that just wanted
a decent, safe place to
raise their children. That
was in 1995. l came home
worn out and tired after
that week and told my
wife this is what I wanted
to do with the rest of my
professional life'

What Habitat and Korando -
who bu served u executive
director of Habltat's Orange
C.Ounty organization since Sept.
15 -do In Orange County has
been in the news recently. The
C.Osta Mesa City Council
decided on Oct. 18 that Habitat
would not be able to build an
affordable-housing
development on a site behind
Harbor Center. The decision
pleased neighbors in the area,
who questioned the effect the
eight proposed homes would
have on the neighborhood. But
it disappolnted Korando and
others, who saw the project as
yet another way to provide
homes for working families and
maJce use of a 1 l /2-acre parcel.
But life goes on for Korando,
and Habitat's mission -to end
substandard housing through
affordable, no-interest loans and
the help of volunteers -
survives.
Korando, a former Costa Mesa
planning commissioner,
answered some questions from
the Pilot's Ryan Carter a bout
Habitat.

Red Ribbon Week is a nati onal
event in which schools promote
healthy, drug-free lifestyles. The
week honors Enrique "KOO " Ca-
marena, a Drug Enforcement
Administratio n special agent
killed in 1985 by drug traffickers.
The meSl>age Friday was con-
veyed using unlikely tools.
Bill Sharp, Big Wave Contest
director for Billabong XXl.,
talked about his experiences
wilh the succcM>ful surfers he's
met.
"Everyone. to d o whal they
do, to keep their minds sharp, to
stay in top physical condition.
has to stay awdy from drugs."
Sharp said.
In his e xperiences with big-
wave surfing. Sharp said he's
seen surfers team up with jet
skiers to help pull them out into
waves Lhat a lone surfer couJdn'l
navigate.
Surfing had become a bout
partnership and teamwork. For
him, it isn't a lone sport any-
more, bolh in and out of Lhe wa·
ter.
"If some o f your friends mess
around with drugs, you are their
lifeguard.· Sharp said.
Fourteen men from Surf Dad's
Agains t Drugs stood dressed in
red wetsuit tops and swimming
trunks and held surfboards.
With their theme "Too Cool for
Drugs," the dads offered slogan~
like "get s toked on surfing and
not on drugs" and "surling is
about doing the right thing."
Even Newport Heights Principal
Kurt Suhr. who is also one of Lhe
Surf Dads. added his message.
"I wanted to talk about being
passionate,· Suhr said to the
children. "There are a lot of
thingi. that are easy to do. It's all
a bout finding things that are
posi1ive and that you're passion·
ate abo ut."
Sharp later took the micro·
phone and held up a four-inch
fin from the underside of a surf-
board.
"1nii. is called a fin and this is
how you maintain control.·
Sharp said. "If you're on dru~.
you have no fin, and there is no
way to maintain control.·
The dads then turned their
surfboards over to reveal a sin-
gle letter on each Lhat turned
into a message: "Say no to
drugs!"
