and poll workers are bracing for a re-
cord number of voters they anticipated
will swarm polling places today.
"I expect It to be just a massive voter
turnout." said Teddi Alves, who was
working in Orange County Democrats'
Huntington Beach campaign office
Monday. "People just think this is so
critical... .
The Orange County Democrats' office
has been busy helping people who
didn't receive voter information. or who
don't know where their polling place is,
Alves said
Local Republicans told a similar story.
As of Monday, a Newport Beach GOP
campaign office had run out of signs,
bumper stickers and just about every-
thJng else, said Lee Frodsham, who
heads the office.
"I think it's going to be tremendous,"
she said. "There's an awful lot of inter-
est, and it seems to be nationwide ....
Voter registration was more than we've
ever seen, except for the recall."
In the 2000 presidential election,
nearly 73'1(, of Orqe CoWlty'a L.34 mil-
lion registered wttrs cast ballot.a, ac-
cord.Ing to the Orange County Registrar
of Voters. On Monday the regi.sttar re-
ported a total of 1A9 million voters in
0(3Jlge County, with 35,570 voters in
COsta Mesa and 60,819 in Newport
Beach.
How many will turn out today -In
Newport-Mesa and nationwide -is the
big question, said UC Irvine political
science professor Louis DeSipio. The
last several presidential elections have
drawn about SOC)(, of U.S. voters, and a
recent Gallup poll p redicted 60% of reg-
istered voters will cast ballots, he said.

while serving as a celebrity chef
for charity Monday.
Bromberg was one of 16
volunteer chefs cooking to raise
money for the Make-A-Wtsh
Foundation of Orange County at
Benihana restaurant in Newport
Beach. The Irvine office of
accounting finn Ernst & Young
held the event for 144 current and

a hibachi grill and dishing them
up for guests, Bromberg tossed
utensils, ~ sauces and flipped
shrimp tails into his chefs hat.

Young artists interpret a painter who works
in a style influenced by Native Americans.

D eborah Haymond urged
fifth-and sixth-graders at
Ea.stbluff Elementary
School to let their painting
vision take over Friday and avoid
copying the style of the artist they
were studying.
"There is nothing perfect about
it," Haymond told them. "It's just
your interpretation."
Students learned about Fritz
Scholder, a lMng artist who paints
in a style heavily influenced by
Native American art of Sante Fe,
N.M. Scbolder's pieces are touched
with surrealism, and Haymond
urged the young artists to avoid
sketching every detail ~e
feathers in their paintin~ of a
Native American man in a
headdress.
Haymond pointed out red
splotches across a Scholder painting
and asked them what they thought
the blasts of color might be.
One student said berries; another
said blood.
"There really is no right answer,"
she said. "This ls about how you
interpret It.•
She wandered through the
classroom, telling students to make
colors brighter, or to mab lines
bigger, but never Mid the word no

scrubbing.·
Later, she showed Jtudents how
to use streaks of color to make
feathers on the headdress of the
painting rather than lines.
It's this sort of instJUC1ion that
won over Malik Muhammad, 10.
"She's a really good art teacher,"
Malik said. "She really helpe ua out
at this stuff."

Huntington Beach at the time of
the accident, his attorney Jo-
seph Cavallo said. Instead of
taking the Corona del Mar Free-
way. he took surface streets and
made a wrong tum, ending up
on Bristol Street just south of
First Street in Santa Ana. where
the accident occurred.
If he had not been in the acd-
deni. Cavallo Sjid. Greg Haidl
would have been home before

Greg Haidl's attorneys ques-
tioned the accuracy of the alco-
hol-screening test, saying spicy
food or medication could have
given a false reading OD the de-

The day after the collision,
Greg Haidl was hospitalized for
depression, his attorney Pete

receiving treatment for the ill-

ary.
Greg Haidl, Keith Spann and
Kyle Nachreiner are accused of
gang-raping an allegedly un-
conscious 16-year-old girl in
Don Haidl's Corona del Mar
home in 2002. The incident was
videotaped. Briseno declared a
mistrial in June after a jury
hopelessly deadlocked.
While he was free on bail
awaiting retrial, Greg Haidl was
arrested OD charges that he had
sex with another 16-year-old
girl. That was the latest in the
series of minor run-ins with the
law, prompting Briseno to put
restrictions on Greg Haidl's bail.
