My values regard gay people as God's children as surely as any of the rest of us - and not with an asterisk that says "as long as we can change them to be exactly like us.· And my values con.sider discrimination again.st gays -as surely as discrimination against black people 50 years ago - totally un·Ouistian. So what we have here is not one set of people with values and the other with none, but rather lWO sets of people with values that differ. And the second group must not let the first identify them as vaJueless -which we managed to do in this election. .... It seems to me we have a microcosm of this situation in the rift between the national Episcopal Olurch and Newport Beach's St. James Olurch. After I wrote a column on this issue a few weeks ago, a St. James member calJed me. and in a long -and finally acerbic - conversation said I had it all wrong. that the local church didn't withdraw from the basic spiritual pretepts of the faith, but rather the national church did. So is coming together possible in the larger society. where gay marriage ls a more important tsSue than preemptive war and 56% of the people still think there are weapons or mass destruction to be found in lraq7 And where the Democratic Party chairman in Aorida said wistfully: "They drove a wedge with social issues and got people focused on gay marriage and abortion and filth rather than the war in Iraq and jobs." It seems to me possible only if two firmly held convictions can be moderated. First, the Democratic conviction that most of the people who voted Cor Bush were not very bright citizens who got their news from talk radio -if they got It at all -and are intent on imposing their fundamentalist religious views on our sodety. And, second, the Republican conviction that Kerry's supporters are all atheists and left-wing radicals without any firm spiritual or ethical grounding. Certainly not all Republicans share the evangelicals' literal interpretation of the Bible and their ardor to prevent gay marriage and choice for women and "fix" homosexuals. And just as certainly, there are many millions of Democrats with strong spiritual leanings and moral values. When both are ready to acknowledge that no one has an exclusive grip on such matters, perhaps the soft edges of these two groups can at least begin a mending process. That is, of course, providing the leadership in Washington will allow a climate in which this is possible. Meanwhile, as psycllologlst Hendlin recommended -and as I have dealt with crises all my life -J 'll be holding hopefully to the thought that this, too, will pass. •JOSEPH N. Already set to receive a pension of $65.000 per year froJD the Irvine Valley College District. resigning from Coast -and then running again -allowed Rutz to almost double bla eDsdng total pension. The marathon took place In September, and the event had a travel ->pon->or that helped us plan the hotel. a.trfare and rental car, which made everything ea.c;y and affordable. We had never been to Maw and were anticipating large crowds, ~ it is a beautiful vacation spot, and the marathon attracts people from all over the world. We stayed at the Westin Hotel, a wonderful hotel with lavishly landscaped pools that featured slides and waterfalls, with a magnificent white sand beach a few yards away. You definitely got the best of both We had a great room with an ocean Vlew, so we watched some amazmg sunsets. The hotel has spa facilities. which we plan to visll next time. There was so much else we wanted to see first. We enjoyed snorkeling at Turtle Cove. Little Beach and m front of our hotel. The water was crystal clear and earned quite a .. few fish of all sizes. We went horseback riding in the "Up Country:· where the island views were breathtaking and the horses were bener behaved than .some people we know. Right next door they had a "Zip Line Tour" that was both fun and a lirtle terrifying. as you zip from one platform to another on a wire several hundred feet in the air though the trees. Wow'. We also visited a sugar factory and the Maui Aquarium, the Maui Plantation, and we visited a national park that was a lava flow.
