I've got one. The number of registered voters I used to judge how much movement t)lere'd be as S.J. CAHN final ballots came in was wrong. There are about 55.500 registered voters in C:Osta Mesa. We accidentally reported about 35,500 registered voters in C:Osta Mesa -a mistake we corrected, and a correction I missed. So when I roughly guessed there were 2,360 C:Osta Mesa ballots to count with 100,000 mnatnlng tut week. 1 was off significantly. The number was likely closer to 3,689. With a third as many votes. I would have been less likely to categorically state that Bever was going to bold on to the third seat. It's sttll, of course, the most likely scenario. And for whatever It's worth. there's been little change in the past week. with Garllch cutting the lead from 88 to 67. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, Bever gained three votes and Garlicb four. So. there are plenty of reasons for both to sweat. WHEN 100% IS ALL ntERE IS A reader called in after last week's column to complain about my pronouncing Newport Beach Stew Bromberg still a victor with 100% of the vote. The problem, at least according to this view? While Bromberg has received 31,561 votes in his uncontested race, 35,951 voted in the two-person race between winner and incumbent John Hdfeman and Dolores Otting. Even more, 37,083, voted In the three-person race won by Incumbent Steve Rnunaky. And 42.Sn voted for or against Measure L. the referendum on a resort at Marinaparlc. How then can Bromberg be said to have captured 100% of the vote? Simple. He did. He's captured l 00% of the vote in his race. and while some people might like to see the facl that more than 10,000 Newport Beach voters d.l4n't vo~ for bJm u align they were voting against him. there's no reason to Jump to that c.onclualoo. l?Yen ii be\:f pmered just 10 votes, he'd have 1 O<m of the total A better explanation for the disparity in the totals is that there is a large minority of voters who don't care about the City C:Oundl election. Even the three-person contest had nearly 6,000 fewer votes than the Measure Lone. In a race with only one name, it'• euy to picture an uninterested voter decided not to take the time to color in the box next to Bromberg's name. I'll as quickly as possible chime in with: They should care. The City C:Oundl has as much, if not more, affect on residents' daily lives than their Assembly member, state senator or preaidenllt Tuil explanation will be reinforced, or dismissible, once we have final numben and can see how many people ln Newport Beach voted ln the presidential c.ontest. If that total ls higher still than the Measure L vote, then we can assume there is greeter interest ln nation-1 poUdcs than local nwes. • 8.J. CAHN la the mtMglng editor. In cue you miaaed Rocco in all the other election news, he appeared on the ballot u a candidate Cora teat on the board of the Orange Uaifted School Diatrtct. After filing, he was never beard from again. No campaign men or candidate meetinp or public appeannces or cardboard signa on front lawns. Nothing. And no one cared lince Roe.co was running againlt a well-qualified candJdate strongly supported by the teachers' union. No one cared until the morning or Nov. 3, when lt became apparent that in th1s district that cares deeply a.bout education. Roe.co had just been elected u a trustee. As J write this, he haa still not surfaced, and the voten in Orange Unified are asking themselves how thls could have happened. I could tell them, but it wouldn't help much. I could also tell them that we had our own example of voters abandoning good sense in the case of Armando Ruiz seeking to replace himself on the board of Coast Commwtity College District. Ruiz took advantage of a tax aberration to greatly mcrease lus pension by reuling simultaneously from employment at Irvine Valley College and service as a tru~tee Then, with quite remark.able contempt for the knowledge of voters in his district. he ran for -and won -the seat he had JUSt resigned. Most of us would probabty have been ttmpted by the beefed-up pension, bur Ruiz had the chutzpah to seek H all. lf there's a moral here. I gue!>S it would be that we get who we vote for, so it is in our best mterests to have some idea of who they are. Rocco may tum out to be a lousy trustee -if they can ever find him -but at least he has raised public awareness of this uu1sm a notch or two. Newport Coast, like many newer communities in Southern California, has eliminated utility tin~ by moving all the cables underground. lt's a subtle aesthetic improvement -and one that is becoming more and more widespread. Costa Mesa has taken some steps, notably along 19th Street on the Westside, to get rid of old utility poles. Now, city leaders are considering yanking the poles and wires from all main streets, work the city would try to coordinate with other repairs when possible. It's also work that will run $380 million, a sil.able amount especially given that Costa Mesa residents already owe part of two other major bills: the$ J l 0-million Measure A bond for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District and the $370-million Measure C bond for the Coast Community College District, which cost residents a combined $38.95 per $100,000 of assessed home value. The question, of course, is whether residents will be willing to shoulder another financial bwden. And city leaders are smart in deciding that they will first poll residents to judge the leveJ of support. For the city's sake, the answer should be "yes." At this point, it is clear that ridding the landscape of utility poles and wires is becoming fairly commonplace, especially in Orange County. Residents are coming to expect and demand the aesthetic improvement. Costa Mesa simply can't risk falling behind, perhaps one day being the only city in the area with a skyline dotted by outmoded Ts. lt will matter for property values and for attracting and retaining businesses. Many will argue that moving utility Lines underground is nothing more than needless cosmetic surgery for the city's streets. Mayor Gary Monahan has suggested the city has a greater need for parkland or sewer repairs, for instance. But the simple fact is that utility lines are going to end up underground. Better to begin the work sooner rather than later. If other projects, such as street or sewer repairs, can be accomplished at the same time, aU the better still. Proponents state the church needs this expansion to serve the needs of youth in the community. and neighbors say it is aJready too big for a residential neighborhood. The vast majorily of the community doesn't really care. I think a few facts about the currenr plan might help illustrate the cause for the inten'lity of this debate The current size of the facility is more than l 04,000 square feet on four acres of land, zoned as residential with a conditional-use permit. The proposed expansion would add 21,000 feet of building and a parklng structure of more than 130,000 square feet. The proposed project would take well over a year to huild and displace aJI of the current parking available for the church and high school on the site during construction. r·or those of you who are not members or neighbors of St. Andrew's, please try to picture thh facility a block away from your home. For those who allend Newport Harbor I ligh. visuaJiw rhe parking and traffic 1\sues you will face during construction of this project. For those of you in other parts of the city. consider the precedent this project sets for your neighborhood church. l\vo neighborhood associations have worked with St. Andrew's for more than a year to understand the need for this project and to provide input that would help reduce the impact upon our homes. The current plan, although twice modified, still far exceeds what 1s appropriate for a residential neighborhood. St. Andrew's is a fine. weU-funded organization with a bright and talented membership. I am convinced with this pool of money and talent, they can achieve their stated goal of Increasing service to youth with a remodel and without th1!> massive project. ~ a neighbor, l beg the members of St. Andrew's to urge their leadership to show compassion for their neighbors and abandon this massive development project. The Grahams were joined on their trek by Ted and Darlene Flory of Huntington Beach. ~ the Isles in 16 days 0 •. By Homer Graham L ast May, Homer and Judy Graham of Costa Mesa, accompanied by Ted and Darlene Flory of Huntington Beach, flew to London and boarded a Trafalgar bus tour through southern England. After making stops at Stonehenge, Bath and Cardiff in southern Wales, our tour bus boarded a sea ferry crossing over the Irish Sea to Ireland. In Ireland, we stopped at the Waterford Crystal Factory and Blarney Castle for a chance to kiss the Blarney Stone and acquire the gift of gab. We didn't kiss the Blarney Stone, but Judy might have acquired just a little bit of that gift of gab. Venturing on a scenic, coastal. 100-mile drive around the ~ of Kei:ry is a photographer's delight Our eloquent, well-read tour guide kept commenting on h(JW extremely lucky we were that the weather was so clear and that most of the groups he takes through the area don't get to see half of what we did. Heading nonheast to Umerick and Dublin, Ireland, crossing County Oare en route to Galway Bay, we boarded another sea ferry to cross back over the Irish Sea to Nonhem Wales. We continued Nonh to Edinburgh. Scotland. After a scenic drive through the beautiful Lake District, we visited the grave of William Wordswonh at Dove C.Ott.age in the hamlet of Town F.nd, Grasmere, described by the poet as the fairest place on Barth and where he Uved, wrote an4found lnsplration. Heading back south toward London, we stopped at many popular places, including Coventry and Stratford-Upon-Avon. and visited Shakespeare's birthplace. The next stop was the little church yard at Bladon to see Winston Olurchill's grave. Then it was on to Oxford C.Olleges. Our 16-day, memorable trip ended back in London. •TRAVEL TALES runs on Thursdays.
