Police downplay a ris.e in area hate crimes
Despite increases in Newport and Costa Mesa,
officials cite that the numbers are still few.

of hate crimes in Newport Beach and
Costa Mesa increued 11igbdy in
2003, while numbers dJpped atat~
wide, according to an FBl report re-
leased Monday.
Costa Mee& reported a total of
three hate crimes -one radaOy mo-
tfyated. one ethnicaDy motivated and
one motivated by religlon -up from
only one in 2002. Newport Beach re-
ported seven -four racial. two eth-
nic and one involving religion -up
&om four in 2002.
Though both cities showed In-
creases. bate crimes still represent a
small portion of incidents, police
said.

Saturdays are adoption days
for the coalition's cats. and
Dalebroux helps screen
prospective owners. To adopt
a cat from th~ coalition, a
person must pledge to keep
the cat inside and to never
declaw the animal.
The cost to adopt a cat is
$95, which covers medical
expenses. All cats rescued by
the coalition are spayed or
neutered and get their shots
before adoption. To advertise
the cats. Dalebroux
sometimes appears on ·Tue
~t Place,· a show on
ICDOC· lV that showcases pets
in need of homes.
Dalebroux looks forward to
meeting new animals rescued
from the shelter but said she
prefers that the cats are in her
care for a only short time. ·1

Newport Beach residents are va-
cationing, volunteets from the
Police Department will walCh
their homes -and look out for
others watching their homes.
Residents who call and oodfy
the Newport Beach Police De-
partment that they'D be out of
town can rest assured that a
trained set of eyes will be watch·
ing for anything unusual at their
homes.
About half a d01.ell police vol-
unteers are making rolmds every
week to help keep neighbor·
hoods safe, Newport Beach Sgt.
Steve Shulman said.
"It reduces crime by maktng
people aware of what's going on
in their neighborhood." Shul-
man said. ·And if there ls a bur·
gl.ary. it reduces the time until ~
respond.•
The uniformed volunteers will
go out to the homes and pick up
newspapers, take advertisements
off doorknobs and check for
open windows or doors.
If something's amiss, they'll
log it and notify the owner and, if

usually pretty well acquainted
with their neighbors and watch
out for trouble when people are
away, Shulman said.
But few residents are aware
that the Police Department will
provide an extra set of eyes. add-
ing empty homes to their weekly
rounds.

When people see a uniform
and badge in the neighborhood,
even on a volunteer, they know
that people are looking out for
problems, Otte said.
Neighbors often tell the volun-
teers if anything strange has
been going on, like parties
thrown in the owners' absence,
he said. '
And they'll offer safety advice
to other homeowners they come
across.
"We'U check open garages and
leave a note on the Ooor that
says, 'The amount of time it took
to put this note here, someone

sense, he advised.
Even with people watching a
home, he said, residents should

crimes connected to disabilities
or sexual orientation.
The FBI report released Mon-

Nature gave folks a little. early
taste of winter Sunday and Mon-
day with cold temperatures, in-
cluding a record low in Newport
Beach.
A low-pres.sure sysrerp rolled in
from the north late Satwday

according to National Weather
~ce forecaster Stan Wasowski.
The brief cold snap came sud-
denly, bringing thunder, snow-
capped mountains and not-
quite-froun fingers to normally
tl!mperate Orange County.

land fountain at lunchtime on
Tuesday.
The sun was just starting to
break through and warm the col-
ored tiles of the shopping center
by midday on Tuesday.
But the morning started out so
chilly that Ferrer threw on long
pants, two shirts and a snow hat
for her morning run.
Sunday's high temperature
made it to only 57 degrees in
Newport Beach, beating a 1994
record of 58 degrees. according to
the National Weather Service.
John Wayne Airport stayed at a
relatively chilly 59 degrees but
didn't break any records.
Overnight lows hovered in the
mid-lo high-40s.
Titings wanned up a bit on
Munday but stayed in the low-to
mid-60s.
The temperaturel> were a little
colder than normal for this time
of year, Wasowski said.
But the fewer hours of sunlight,
the chillier the air stays, he scdd.
Saturday's storm dumped snow
as low as 1,500 feet, Wasowski
said.
The white stuff capped not
only the distant ski areas but
Saddleback Mountain as well,
making for picturesque views
from Newport-Mesa.

some on the Corona del Mar High girls
volleyball team that felt slighted the
squad was the No. 4 seed in the
Southern California regional of the CIF
State Division III championships.
Many felt the strength of schedule and
CIF Southern Section Division Ill-A ti-
tle should have garnered at least a No.
2, and possibly a No. I seed.
Redemption came for CdM in the
form of a 25-13, 25·17, 25-19 win over
La Jolla Tuesday night in the
