Taking a bite
out of the
headlines
Interesting news from the north this
week. Well, north Orange County anyway.
first, there was the Oap over the "Los
Angeles Angels." Angela owner Arte More-
no recently Ooated the idea of changing
the team's name from the Anaheim Angels
to the Los Angeles An-
gels. It did not Ooat well. ,.----=---.
Angels fans had a
shmoo, including the
team's biggest fan of all,
the city of Anaheim.
Why change names?
Baseball teams live or
die based on their share
of the revenue from the
television deal that is
hammered out between
Major League Baseball PETER
and the networks. The BUFFA
theory is that more peo-
ple across the country would be inter-
ested in watching a team called the Los
Angeles Angels than a team called the
Anaheim Angels. Good theory, bad public
relations.
Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle was so in-
censed that he asked the other Orange
County cities to p.w resolutions support-
mg the "Anaheim Angels" and condemn-
ing the "Los Angeles Angels." This week. it
was Newport Beach's tum to stand up and
be counted.
"We're not the stepchild of L.A.,• said
Mayor Tod Ridgeway. "We're our own
place. Orange County needs to maintain
that identity."
You go, Tod. Anaheim even got Reps.
Dana Rohrabacher and Olrls Cox to co-
sign a letter of support ror leaving Ana·
heim alone.
Operating on the theory that it is best to
follow a bad idea with a very bad idea,
Moreno suggested a compromise, and we
use the term loosely. Ready? "The Los An-
geles Angels of Anaheim." You like it? Talk
about "catchy." 1ry coming up with a
cheer that ends in "Los Angeles Angels of
Anaheim." Keep trying.
No other suggestions have come from
the Angels offices, thanlc God, and 1 sus-
pect the idea will die the quiet death 1t so
richly deserves.
Ironically, there was a time long ago
when the team was mdeed called the Los
Angeles Angels.
They were the star attraction in the Pa-
cific Coa.st League, which was considered
the th1rcl major league until the 1950s. The
Los Angeles Angels played at the old Wri-
gley Field in South Central Los Angeles on
Avalon Boulevard.
Did that park have anything to do with
its older and more famous sister -Wri-
gley Field in Olicago? As a matter of fact,
Virginia. ii did. Olewing gum pooh-bah
William IC. Wrigley already owned the Ol.1-
cago Cubs when he bought the Los An·
geles Angels ln 1921 for the breathtaking
sum of $150,000. He built the Los Angeles
Wrigley Field in 1925, and you've seen it a
thousand times, although you probably
didn't know it
It was Hol,l;ywood's favorite location for
baseball movtes in the · 40I and 'SOs. in-
cluding "Pride of the Yankees .. wlth Gary
Cooper; "The Stratton Story" with Jimmy
Stewart; •The Kid from Left Field" with
Dan Dailey; "The Winning Team" with
Ronald Reagan as Grover Oeveland Alex-
ander; •oamn Yankees" wlth Tub Hunter
and Gwen Verdon, and even one eptaode

claimed he had invenred a pow-

away. It didn't work as he
thought he would. but George
just had a good laugh about it.
He was a free spirit Once a
friend saw George tying on the

Jackie Payne said. "But when she
put it ~ from the window, I
realized it works that way.·
Edge also removed a bamboo
rug from the baclcyard patio and
brought it to the living area.
'Ibat was pretty drastic for
Payne to digest initially. but she
liked the way the rug looUd in
her living room.
"111 have to replace it on the
patio: she said. "But that's OK."
The Paynes also had contem-
porary blue leather couches in
the living area. which Edge said
she planned to • accessorize •
with throws or whatever else she
finds to ~ the room a wann
glow and cottage-like reel

found in the garage on the wall.·

The challenge was to find the
right kind of bolts and saews to
make it stay on the wall, Edge
said.

ply replied; "Go away, I'm work·

He was also active in the com·
munity. He enjoyed inreracting
with people. George was kind-

help.
An avid boater. George was
apromineot member of the Bal·
boa Power Squadron. the local
chapter or a sail and power-boat·
inggroup.
He was a Parks and Recreation
Commissioner for the city.

For years, the Newport Beach
City C.Ouncil has been at the front
ofa storm surge in interest and
~fforts to improve the quality of
y.rater in the harbor and along the
t>eaches.
' Strict enforcement,
public-relations campaigns and
demands that other governments
follow suit have all been part of the
city's war against polluted waters.
Between July 2003 and June 2004,
the city issued nearly 1.000
citations and violation notices.
Orange C.Ounty's Resources and
Development Management
Department found that in 2002·03,
Newport Beach was responsible
for 85% of water-quality
enforcement in the county.
Last week. city leaders waded
deeper into the fight by approving
a law aimed at reducing the
number of spills caused by grea~e
block.ages. It will require most
restaurants to pay a yearly fee for a
grease-disposal permit. Under the
law, restaurants that don't already
have a grease interceptor will have
to install one or pay a fee toward
sewer maintenance. And those
that discharge waste causing sewer
blocks or spills will be charged for
the cleanup. Passage of the law
meets a Jan. 1 deadline from the
Santa Ana Regional Water Quality
Control Board.
The size of the fees has not been
determined yet. Those decisions
will come in July, when the city
next puts together its budget. But
initial estimates put them in the
range of $20 for the permit, with
an annual inspection fee of $100 to
$150. Oeanup after a s pill could
cost a restaurant about $800.
Those costs, obviously, have
restaurant owners concerned.
Unfortunately, the law and its
associated costs a.re necessary
parts of the fight to keep our
waters clean. It certainly is a battle
worth waging: Fewer spills mean
more people coming to town -
remember the dearth of people
following Huntington Beach's
summer-long beach closure, or,
more recently, the numbers of
beachgoers who had to put their
towels on far off sands because of
the Labor Oay closure -and that
means m ore people patro nizing
Nel-vport businesses. restaurants
included.
The battle, though. should not
stop at Newport's borders. Having
put a burden on local businesses,
city leade rs now must continue to
press other city governments to
improve enforcement and
maintenance, reducing the
probability of s pills caused by
problems outside Newport's
control.
Only with such collective effort
can there be a realistic hope of
seeing our waters crystal clean.

Costa Mesa employee bargammg units
and approved by the ( 11y Council dur·
ing it's meeting on Nov 15. Quile the
contrary. If we expect conunued excel-
lence by I.he city employee<; we musl
do our part by providing competitive
wages and benefits.
That being said, I am rnucal of the
City Council and the process that
caused our leaders to dip mto reserves
to the rune of nearly $2 million to fund
I.he increases.
The City Council and staff spent
countless hours and many public hear·
ings on the budget thls spring. during
whlch individual council members al·
tempted to nickel and dime budget
culS -including suggestion.. of clos·
mg the Job Center and the community
gardens. Somehow m tJus proce<>.'>. al
though I.he potenual shortfall of the
contracts must have been clear to
them, the council managed only lo
budget $750,000 for wage and benefit
mcreases -less than half of what I.hey
eventually approved. One hru. to won
der how I.hey couJd have been so far off
I.he mark.
During that process we saw speaker
after speak.er harangue the counctJ on
any number of issues having to do wt th
I.he budget. These presentations made
sense for I.he most part. Eventually. the
council managed lO put together a
budget and avoided drasut cuts by U'>
ing I.he "fund balance" to make the
numbers work. They also launched at·
templS to find new funding r;ource~.
During their recent meeung. however.
the council spent a total of only nine
minutes, including I.he pre..entauon by
staff members. on lh~ nt'W c:ontracts.

And. much to my amcu..ement, not a
single resident roM-to speak to I.his is·
sue. This is stan cont~t to the dozens
of residents who spoke recently regard -
ing the perceived mislrea1ment of arn ·
mals at the animal shelter and the
large group who spoke regarding resi·
dent-only parking near Wt.lr;on Streel.
I found myself wondering where the
usual cadre of frequent '>peakers had
gone. All.hough tJus llem was the last
one on I.he agenda. I.he evening was
still young when Mayor (,ary Monahan
adjourned the meeting. I also found 11
mleresting that the only part of I.he

the council itself

state championships hoping to cap a
perfect season with another tide.
But as the rain turned Woodward
Park into a slushy mud pit, the Sea
Kings' hopes of a state titJe washed
away and were pos.sibty put on the back

"We won the CIF titJe last week, so if
we would have won state, it would have
been multiplied by 10," St Geme said.
St. Geme said she went o'ut really fast
and then faded a little bit after the
three-mile mart on the five-kilometer
course.
