UO CAMPUS -The apartments in a
new campus housing development fea·
ture views of the San Joaquin Hills, ca·
ble and Internet hookups in the bed·
rooms, and a highly preciom
commodity -closet space.
Even the name, Palo Verde. sounds a
little like a high-priced condo project,
but the apartments are part of a gradu·
ate student housing community that
nearly doubled in size when six new
buildings opened this fall After a sec-
ond phase of expansion is finished in
mid-2005, Palo Verde will include 652
apartments.
UC Irvine oftidals put in the develop-
ment to addrest current demand as well
as to plan ahead, Palo Verde housing di-
rector Gerald Parham said.
Graduate students may wait up to 18
months to get an apartment on cam-
pus. With about 4,300 gradate students
in a student body of 24,000, UCI is the
fourth-largest campus of the nine in the
UC system.
The university spent about $78 mtl-
lion on the PaJo Verde project, but the
rental costs there are moderate com-
pared to housing elsewhere in Orange

Scandinavian twist to some of the
more famlllar holiday Icons, was
put together by the Orange
County chapter of the Swedish
Women's F.ducational Assn.
A smorgasbord of Swedish
handcrafts and Ouistmas foods.
the event also included a
traditional Santa Lucia
procession. Oad in a white gown
and crowned with a ring of
electric candles. Alexandra
Cunha. 16, of Costa Mesa, led a
train of girls wearing similar
outfits, two mini·Santas and a
collection of small boys called
sjiimgossar, who wore pointed
hats with shiny stars.

asking for donations of DVDs,
books, baueries, PlayStatlons,

The city of Costa Mesa is
seeking donations of money,
supplies, materials. food and
drinks for 1ls Neighbors for
Neighbors spring 2005 commu-
nity cleanup event.
The event will be on April 23.
It will bring together residents
and community leaders in an
effort to improve low-Income
homes. The Canyon Parle clean-
up wall be part of this event.
The event will include remov·
ing graffiti, cleaning up debris
and general neighborhood
beautification Nearly 600 vol ·
unteers are expected lo attend
Lhe event, which slarls at 8 a.m.
and ends at noon.

practice on Thanksgiving morning and

practice, the former players talk to the
current batch of Sailors to give advice
